How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe location is prefect very central and close to every thing. They staff are great and very friendly and where available at all times. The breakfast has lots a choice and fresh.
The hotel is going through an upgrade to be aware off - some some things are 100% and other re not fully complete. This is to be aware rather than putting any downer on our stay.

Verified reviewThe Breakfast
The hotel was being renovated, with builders waking us up around 8am, no WiFi in the bed room and as a result no TV. There is no lift in the hotel, and the signage on the walls indicating where rooms are located is dated and does not match with the actual location of the room. This resulted in us having to haul luggage up and down many flights of stairs before having to go back to reception for a staff member to show us the location of our room. The hotel is not suitable for anyone with mobility problems. Also the prices for alachol was much higher than other hostilities in the town. Eg. a gin & tonic was €10.20 compared to €8.30 locally.

Verified reviewIt is in the heart of Birr and close to the castle. The restaurant has nice Irish food, and on Friday night is steak day. The room is cosy and if you need a TV, it is a modern one with a good size. The bathroom is enormous, completing the relaxing night.
I normally like to plan those visits close to the date, as I just need to drive, and the price was pretty high, almost double the normal price.

No lift, no disabled bedroom so parents could not wash as couldnt climb into bath. Had to move to sister hotel for 2nd night.

Verified reviewThe staff were lovely and helpful. Lovely location.
No lift. I was on the top floor and had to climb many flights of stairs. I have had a recent operation. Hotel under renovation and I was not informed before my stay. 'Because of dust' I was woken at 8am by the fire alarm. 130 euro for a single room was not good value.

Verified reviewFriendly staff. Evening meal was good and plenty of choice at breakfast. Downstairs decor was welcoming.
The noise on arrival. Had to change rooms due to demolition work being carried out next door preventing me from resting after a long journey. The hotel bedrooms were tired and in need of some TLC

Verified reviewThe lady that checked me in was quite nice and helpful, and the breakfast was good.
The restaurant was awful, staff walking past you for a long time not asking if you want to be seated, then the staff did not write down the order, got the order wrong, including for other people in the restaurant. The food was awful and even after complaining to the manager, he did not offer anything as consolation. I did not eat my entire meal, but paid the bill and left.

Verified reviewExcellent location. If you're taking the bus from Tullamore, you'll get off just outside the hotel on Emmet Square. Once inside, you're likely to be greeted by a genuinely kind person who will show you to the breakfast area and give you sightseeing and restaurant suggestions. (In my case, that person was Anita.) I was traveling solo, and it really makes a difference to be greeted warmly. I stayed in a large room with a view of the square. I cannot say enough about the comfort of the bed or the cleanliness of the space. I also appreciated not needing an engineering degree to figure out the shower, which can happen in other places. My first night, I had dinner in the hotel restaurant and enjoyed a good curry, which I asked to be made extra spicy. It did not disappoint. The second night, I took Anita's suggestion to take a short walk to the County Arms Hotel and had a fabulous baked salmon with creamed potatoes. The staff in the breakfast area (Dooly's coffee shop) will take excellent care of you. It's a cliche to say "they'll treat you like family," but in my case, I felt like a guest in someone's home rather than a customer. The portions are generous and delicious, and I was surprised by the quality of the coffee. So good! (On both mornings, I noticed that locals come into the coffee shop off the street to eat in or to take out. That says something.)
The carpets in the corridors are worn, and the fixtures and decorations could be updated, but I had a wonderful experience otherwise. It didn't bother me.
