We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.

GermanyWarm water would be nice. Lunch and dinner options would be a wonderful addition.
The host family is wonderful. They are very friendly and are willing to organise everything you want or need. The water-facing seating area is a great place to spend time together and watch the boats and birds. It's quiet. We can absolutely recommend this wonderful place..Our young children loved every second of our stay...great place for kids! :)

IndiaWhile the breakfast was a nice local option which we liked, one could argue that the choice is limited.
Serene atmosphere with the backwaters around. Great to have had a convenient arrangement for a boat ride with a friendly guide. Everything else was just as described. The hosts were prompt and helpful with local tips. Smooth experience overall!

AustraliaNot a complaint but a tip - the location was correct on Google and Apple maps, but better to approach from the north as that way the road is better paved.
Lovely waterside location at the intersection of a canal and the lake, with a couple of small restaurants and a shop selling snacks and drinks etc just around the corner. I spent hours watching the boats go by from the balcony of my room which is also where the tasty breakfast is served (all four rooms have the same view). The room furnishings are basic but very clean and the shower was excellent. As a solo traveller I felt very safe - you're staying above a friendly family home and there are internal bolts on the room doors should you wish to use them. The hosts arranged a fantastic sunrise boat tour for me with Justin from My Punnyalan Shikara Boat Service which started and finished right at the accommodation - very convenient. It was also fun to cycle around the area on the bikes that are provided free of charge. Glad I stayed at Backwater Breeze and great value for money.

FinlandPerfect place to escape busy and crowded city and enjoy quiet village atmosphere. Paradise for birdwatchers. Breakfast was good, and there are two restaurants nearby. I would recommend the nearest one (Lake N Cruise). The food is simple and cheap, and it's a perfect spot to enjoy magic sunsets at 6 pm. It is also easy to reach Kumarakom center and bird sanctuary (tuk-tuk 150 rupees one way). Early morning backwater boat ride for three hours though small canals was something special. And many thanks for sincere hospitality to the hosts, who were super friendly and helpful. Overall 10+!

New ZealandNot a negative per se as I liked the remoteness of the stay. However only two restaurants within a few minutes walk away, and no juice or tea shops nearby. It’s 25+min walk to the main road to reach other restaurants, or can borrow bicycle from host (would not recommend riding in the dark though as road is not paved all the way).
Very comfortable stay in a serene environment. Right on the backwater so plenty of activity to observe - local boats and house boats going past, as well as locals fishing on the bank. Host was very responsive - answered all my questions regarding getting to the accommodation, as well as arranged a shikara tour and auto for me.

United KingdomNothing to not like.
Five weeks into my India trip, and I was looking for somewhere to slow down and take it easy - and Backwater Breeze proved to be perfect for this. It's a lovely place to fall into the rhythm of the Backwaters, watching the birds and the boats come and go. The owners are incredibly helpful, and the breakfasts tasty and substantial.

United StatesIf I could give this place 10 stars I would! The location and hospitality are tied for first place in my heart. They brought me fresh chai upon arrival, offered to let me borrow a bicycle to cycle around the canals, helped me to book a boat ride at sunrise, and provided me with the perfect place to unwind and relax. The AC is a wonderful bonus! I’ll be back. Thank you for the best time on the backwaters!

United KingdomNothing, I would happily stay here again
We loved our stay at Backwater Breeze, having the balcony outside the room looking out to the backwaters was so peaceful! The owner Ajish was absolutely amazing at helping us arrange boat tours, recommendations on where to eat, and he went above and beyond to help us book a train ticket to Varkala. The breakfast every morning on the balcony was delicious! The Aircon was amazing too and very needed to escape the humidity of Allepey!

United KingdomLovely relaxing and quiet spot by the river. Hosts are absolutely fantastic and did their utmost to ensure a pleasant stay. Bathroom perhaps a little worn and needing a makeover, but nothing drastic. Few basic toiletries would be helpful as only soap provided. Mattresses are in the process of being changed, we had one of the new ones so felt comfortable. Shared veranda is partitioned off from one another to give a sense of privacy from other guests by a little wall between seating areas. Power for AC was intermittent, but only off for a short while. Breakfast was great, different for each of the three days. Two 3hr boat rides arranged by the host right from the property that were fun, and tuk tuks to get where we needed. Only about a 20 mins walk to the bridge and you can be on the opposite bank for a pleasant stroll in around half an hour or so. As others have said, local restaurants close a little early, but at least you can get a beer and a couple of take out beers if you want.

IrelandOnly one complaint - the bed could have been less hard and dressed a little better. Seems we're not the only ones to mention the hard mattress and new ones are on order!
The owners were exceptional. They could not have been more attentive hosts. The location is wonderful, fronting on to a backwater leading to the lake. Its a tranquil spot, perfect for bird and boat watching. Traditional Keralan Breakfast with a few additions like toast and omelette and coffees were delivered to the seating area in front of each room.

SpainThere wasn't anything to dislike about this homestay however, if you are sensitive to mattress firmness you may struggle a little as it's a typical Indian mattress which are very hard.
The hospitality of the family was amazing they really couldn't have done more for us. We arrived at 6am.after an overnight train journey, and they allowed us to check into our room immediately, which was so appreciated. The area is just beautiful, very peaceful and a great way to unwind after spending time in the hectic cities. We had breakfast there 3 mornings and the food was different every morning. Freshly prepared and delivered to our room terrace. They don't offer evening meals so we ate in the local restaurant (Sivaganga Family Restaurant) just a 5 minute walk from.the homestay. The food and welcome was excellent there, and they will also sell you a cold beer!

United KingdomThis guesthouse is in the most stunning location, overlooking the river. There is rich birdlife - egrets, kingfishers, cormorants, kites. It is tranquil and a great place to recharge the batteries. Breakfast was great - a choice of Keralan or European breakfast (omelete, toast and bananas). If you don't have your own transport, it's easy enough to get a tuktuk or car to the property. There are two restaurants very close by. There are plenty of places to go walking or the guesthouse has bicycles to use. The host goes out of his way to help you have a good stay - he even booked a train ticket for me (because the train booking system can be hard to get your head around and not possible without an Indian telephone number.) He is happy to organise boat tours and also tuktuks if you need to go anywhere, otherwise it's about 1.5km walk up to the main road. Can't recommend this place highly enough.

United KingdomThe bed was very hard. We had free water every day so used a lot of plastic bottles, maybe have a large water cooler/filtered water we can use to top up our water bottles would be more eco friendly. You have to pay cash as they do not accept credit cards.
Right on the river so you can see the boats passing by and watch the birds diving for fish. Very quiet with 2 restaurants nearby, but had to eat early as they close at 6pm. However not a problem as the breakfasts were so lovely both Indian and continental we only needed something light in the evening so just shared a curry and chappatti for 150 rupees. It was lovely to use the free bicycles as we got out to explore the rice fields and canals. We booked a boat ride for two hours for 1800 rupees very good value. We also cycled to the Driftwood museum fascinating collection of wood resembling different objects. We were able to have our clothes washed for a small fee.

United KingdomBed was rather hard for me and outdoor fan was not very good. Little tricky to find but rang property and they directed the tuktuk driver.
Fantastic location right beside the water. You can sit on your balcony and watch boats passing by whilst spotting many varieties of birds, was really lovely! Little shop and restaurant just around the corner. Boats can pick you up at the property or you can take a short walk to the boat dock. Good breakfast and lovely hosts and staff.

United KingdomPerfect place for a tranquil backwaters experience. Real highlights are the terrace views of the houseboats going by, and they have a few bicycles available for cycling in the area along the canals. The hosts were lovely, and always available to answer any questions and help with info. The breakfast varied every day which was nice. We loved exploring the area on bike and on foot, and did 2 sikara boat tours organised through the guesthouse which were excellent. Highly recommend.
