How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGreat check in by Samuel. Excellent location. Clean and functional
Needs more lighting in the room. Natural light only by opening doors and danger of letting in multitudes of mosquitos

Verified reviewLoved their service and hospitality. They are very much understanding. One of the best locations to book a resort as it is very much safe for women to stay and go around varkala, given their wonderful ambience. Their breakfast combos are a must try. They are very friendly and the stay is pet friendly. They are more than willing to help travel and explore Varkala for the ones who have no idea on how or where to start. Their location is prime and centre to most areas and a secured route to the Varkala Cliff region. They will be the ones we reach out if we visit once again.

Verified reviewGood location with a lovely breakfast view. Nice yoga shala available.
Nearly constant power outages after a storm – apparently only affecting this hotel. We had paid extra for a room with AC, but the heat was unbearable. After one night we were offered another room, but that one also had frequent outages, so we had to keep switching back and forth. Staff made light of the situation and treated it like a joke instead of showing any real concern. In the end, charging the full price was simply not fair.

Verified reviewThe breakfast at sun Francisco was the only good thing, Antony is very welcoming and remembers how you like your breakfast. My mum told him it was my birthday and him and his staff came over with a fruit platter and wished me happy birthday 🥰 super cute!
Our experience at this hotel was very disappointing. The owner was unhelpful and avoided us when we were leaving, refusing to assist with our luggage down a flight of stairs and despite the fact that the hotel was quiet at the time. He also declined to accompany us to the nearby taxi rank (just a 5-minute walk), leaving me to do two trips while my elderly mother struggled with her suitcase on the uneven roads. In addition to the poor service, the hotel itself was not as advertised. It is not seafront, and there is no sea breeze due to other buildings blocking the view. The rooms were dark, dingy, and extremely stuffy, with no proper airflow. We found the conditions so uncomfortable that we checked out early. Overall, we wouldn’t recommend this hotel due to both the lack of hospitality and the unsatisfactory accommodation.
To these 3 ladies, We are genuinely disappointed to read your review—not because of the critique itself, but because it stands in stark contrast to the daily interactions we had during your stay. The owner and team had multiple conversations with all three of you every single day, and we consistently asked whether everything was okay. Not once was any issue brought to our attention. Everything seemed perfectly fine from your side—until the very last moment. On the day of your checkout, you requested assistance with your luggage at a time when we were extremely busy managing multiple guest arrivals and departures. One vehicle was even stuck in the mud, requiring immediate attention, our manager was standing in the mud pushing the car, which you witnessed with your own eyes, in that moment only you asked for help. We kindly asked you to wait just 5 minutes, but your reaction was one of clear entitlement—as if you expected to be prioritized over all others. No one refused to help; we asked for patience. You fully overreacted by leaving without waiting, when our team came up to help you to our surprise you were not there. You sneaked out. we find this behaviour quite pathetic. To say we avoided you is simply false. In fact, we had a small gift—a curry leaves plant you asked for was waiting at our reception for you as a parting gesture but you left without a single word to our staff, not even a goodbye. We also feel compelled to clarify another likely reason for this review: your request for a refund when your plans changed and you wanted to check out a night early. As per our clear policies, we were unable to accommodate that last-minute refund request, and it's unfortunate if this influenced your tone. Regarding the property itself: we’ve never claimed direct seafront views. Only from our restaurant which is true and you enjoyed the service there but it's not reflecting at all in your review, you have nothing to give it seems. Our guesthouse is located near the cliff with easy access to the beach—just like most places in Varkala. As for room comfort, this is highly subjective, and had you expressed even one concern during your stay, we would have done our best to improve your experience. We pride ourselves on honesty and heartfelt hospitality. What saddens us most is not the criticism, but the level of fake friendliness you displayed during your stay, only to write such a harsh and misleading review later. This kind of behavior does not reflect the spirit of respectful travel, and we wouldn’t wish such guests even upon our strongest competitors. We wish you all the best in the future. Kind regards, the disappointed Mad about Coco Team

Verified reviewLocation is fantastic directly to the beach.
Lots of mosquitos in the rooms compared to other hotels we stayed at whilst travelling. No hot water Maybe staff a little more approvals and welcoming rather staring and making you feel, what do you want !
Dear Surin, Thank you for your review. While we’re pleased you appreciated our excellent beachfront location, we were quite surprised by some of your comments, especially regarding the behavior of our team. You booked a budget room, which does not include hot water—a detail clearly stated at the time of booking. As a courtesy, we offered you a free upgrade to a room with hot water. However, you chose to return to your original room after seeing a lizard, which, while harmless and common in tropical areas, understandably may not be to everyone’s comfort. Your room is fully equipped with mosquito nets on all windows. Mosquitoes typically only become an issue when the door is left open with lights on. Had you informed us during your stay, we would have been happy to assist, but we were never made aware of any such issues. What surprises us most is your comment about our team making you feel unwelcome. We were always present, approachable, and had several friendly conversations with you—including casual chats about our dogs, Indian tea, and local life. We made every effort to ensure you felt comfortable and supported during your stay. Tropical life is certainly different from what one may be used to in the UK, and it may not suit everyone. Still, we hope the rest of your travels went well. Sincerely, Team Mad About Coco

Verified reviewWe booked 3 nights at mad about coco, and it was unfortunately not worth the price. The 1st night our AC was leaking on the bed, Anita tried to help but it was late so the technician didn’t come. Result : we slept without AC but still paid fully for a room with AC. During the stay, there was power cuts at least 2 times and also some times no water / no hot water. Knowing that it’s really hot in Varkala this was unpleasant. The wifi was really really bad (quite inexistant) the first 2 days of our stay (even if Anita the manager was really nice and tried everything to help us) The bathroom furniture was not usable as it was broken and water was leaking inside. We would have appreciate a discount on our stay but no one proposed anything to us which we found pretty unfair. At least the location was good, the staff nice and the bed confortable, but we came to relax and we ended up very disappointed
I mentioned all just before

Verified reviewIncredible location just a couple of minutes from the buzzing North Cliff. Anita was the absolute friendliest and most helpful hotel manager and gave us some great recommendations for where to go and how to get around. Room was basic but clean and comfortable.
While we loved our stay, there were a few small practical issues (doors didn’t close properly, windows couldn’t be secured, power supply was disrupted so AC cut out for a short while both nights we were there).

Verified reviewThe location and the complimentary breakfast really made our stay wonderful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The facilities were very simple, but not much more is needed when you have this paradise beach right out the door.
Two single beds put together is not ideal for a couple.

Verified reviewLovely retreat a few steps from the cliff in Varkala. The staff were very helpful even though we arrived late. The rooms are spacious and very clean, with big bathrooms, and there’s plenty of shady hangout areas around the hotel. We loved the included breakfast at the cafe next door.
The hotel’s yoga teacher has left, so there is currently no yoga which is a shame, although it’s easy to find and join classes around Varkala.
