How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewThe location was amazing! Very close to Dashashwamedh Ghat, and near to the main markets. The staff were very friendly and helpful, from the guy that checked us in, to the guy that cleans the rooms to the guys that delivered room service. The hotel organised a taxi to pick us up from the airport then two young men met us and carried our bags the last 15 minutes, because cars/rickshaw can't get down the narrow streets to the hotel. The food and drinks made in the hotel's restaurant were decent and room service was swift. We also booked the Ekaant room so had a little balcony with a view over the Ganges. The room was clean, but dated. A decent private shower & toilet too.
Cracks in the walls, the WiFi was intermittent at best, couldn't really use the balcony because of the monkeys out there, the TV didn't work at all, numerous plug sockets didn't work. As the days went on, flies and ants appeared in our room - little black flies on the wall above the bed, little red ants in our bed. There was a huge thunderstorm while we were there and water started coming in under the balcony door, and dripping from the ceiling in 2 places. When we asked for spare towels, we were given damp ones 'because there'd been no sun to dry them'. These things are a shame because it was actually a pretty pleasant stay, and I'd still recommend it if you're on a budget, but just be warned - the place is outdated and in need of a few fixer-uppers.

15 minutes walk from the nearest road accessible to car transport. Had to walk on the dirty narrow streets for 15 minutes to the hotel. Small rooms.

Verified reviewThe views were very nice over the river since this place is in a building directly on the ghat. At the same - time being directly on the ghat, also means it’s super noisy, very smelly, and full of bugs. Difficult to reach. No vehicles of any kind can enter the small streets here. The room is small and uncomfortable. Overpriced and overrated. For the same price you can stay at a luxury resort on the river Ganga, right outside the city with none of the horrible smells and inconveniences here

Verified reviewWe spent 4 nights at Palace on the Steps. The rooms are small and basic but the location for the price is unbeatable. Being able to watch ghat life on the Ganges from your room balcony or the rooftop terrace is incredible. The food at the restaurant was also great. The hotel is hard to find - and contacting the hotel to organise assistance on arrival was tricky - but it is worth persevering. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Verified reviewGreat location, staff very helpful and ready to respond to any needs or questions quickly, helped me carry luggage. The view from the cafe is amazing. The bed was huge and comfy. Felt very protected when I realised people were on guard around the building 24/7 and making sure the monkeys don’t stay around on my roof. It was a pleasant touch that they had recently refreshed the painted art on the walls near the buildings and it brought me a feeling of safety and care for surroundings. On arrival the staff showed me their two buildings and allowed me to choose which room I want to stay in. Very kind to provide complimentary water and toiletries, which was not just shower gel etc but even a comb and a dental and a shaving kit. Breakfast was lovely and arrived quickly. Great experience, would absolutely come again! Also met another solo female traveller guest who returned here many times so it seems like a good place to be and worth climbing the steps for.
There were some mosquitoes and a dragonfly in my room which I lost and couldn’t find later to ask staff for help when they were there, but they gave me a refill mosquito repellent which solved the problem. Water from near the AC on the wall was slightly trickling down which was just tiny so it didn’t cause me an inconvenience. Ventilation was good where I stayed as there were fans both in the bathroom and room, however perhaps airing the rooms a bit more often would help.
