I thought the food pricing is on the higher side. But it was absolutely the best chetinadu food I ever had. My suggestion to the hotel management would be to add a details of the photos, history, etc. of the building. It would be a good way for residents to understand the photos.

Room was large and comfortable. Food was excellent. Service was super. Since the rooms were designed like a traditional Indian room, I did not feel like I was at a hotel. The staff dressed in traditional attire and speaking very native style, gave a very homely feeling. Both of us were completely relaxed and was surprised we had to check out. There was a book written about the Chetinad history and heritage. It was very good book and explained the history and how they have lived, including festivals, families, etc. A very good way to know the history and culture of the chettiars for outsiders.

Food was overpriced, although tasty and fresh. Bathroom amenities like hair conditioner and body lotion were not provided. There is no way to call any staff if we require anything. Neither an intercom, or even a bell. Every time we have to go out and try to find someone. Accomodation provided to the drivers are full of bed bugs. Our driver had to sleep in the car.

Exceptional food. It is worth going there just for their lunch. I haven’t had a better lunch anywhere in the south of India, than The Bangala. The people who serve make it an exceptional experience.

There’s a tendency among staff to turn on their cellphones with loud sound when not busy. I understand this is quite common these days, but it can disrupt the otherwise peaceful atmosphere. There’s plenty of space in the back garden—perhaps it could be used to grow vegetables and properly recycle organic waste? Toothbrushes could be switched to bamboo alternatives, and shampoo containers replaced with ceramic ones—easily sourced from local antique ceramic shops. It would align beautifully with a more sustainable approach. The ceiling fans upstairs (I was in Room 24) only seem to work at full speed. It would be great if that could be adjusted.

This place is truly a hidden gem. The open, spacious verandas and beautifully maintained garden create such a peaceful atmosphere. The swimming pool is clean, and the guests tend to have a high civic sense, which adds to the overall calm. I really appreciated the absence of TVs in the rooms and no forced bonfires or nighttime activities—such a refreshing change! The staff are super friendly yet non-intrusive, always available without being overbearing. Beds and linens were perfect, and a special mention for using non-plastic water bottles—a small but meaningful touch. Highly recommended for anyone looking to slow down and enjoy thoughtful hospitality in a serene setting. Food was mindblowing, the flavors, textures and presentations, broke the spell i had on Chettinad food!

Heritage property with a unique, old world charm. The rooms are modern and comfortable, with beautiful Athangudi floor times. Our room just outside the swimming pool was lovely. The staff is warm, hospitable and always ready to help with tips regarding sightseeing. The kitchen and dining staff is amazing. Sadly, their manager Mr Yakob George died of a sudden and shocking heart attack just a few days prior to our visit - but his assistant Ms Hinaaz was coping very competently and took good care of the guests. The food her deserves a special shout out - every meal is a poem! This was my second trip to this place and won't be the last for sure :) The owner, 91 year old Mrs Meyappam, still visits every day to supervise the kitchen, set the menu and motivate the staff. Her energy and enthusiasm are an inspiration!

We had a wonderful stay with our kids at the Bangala. The rooms were spacious and beautiful. The hotel is well maintained. The staff is also kind and helpful, right from the managers to the housekeeping. Fantastic freshly prepared meals. One of the best hotels we have stayed at, truly 5 star!
