How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewI loved how this hotel was exactly in the middle of town. Close enough to restaurants, close enough to churches, museums, and close enough to the town square. The hotel room was so unique (It's literally a cave) and so beautiful. The room was big enough for me and there was plenty of room for my belongings. Overall, it was a great hotel room and the city was absolutely beautiful.
I can't say there was a lot that I didn't like about the hotel. Since you're staying in a cave, it gets musty but that's what you get for sleeping in a cave hotel. I wish the bathroom area had more room. I felt a little closed in but bathrooms in Italy are very small so I can't complain too much.

Verified reviewThe room is spectacular, it's literally a cave! It is well equipped and has a very atmospheric lighting. Taking a bath is an amazing experience, totally recommend. The host is friendly, she drew a very good touristic route for us, and the location is just perfect - in the sassi but not in their centre, so avoiding crowded streets. Breakfast is ok. Overall, it was a cool experience!
This room is a perfect option to stay for 1-2 nights for fun, but it has a major problem with ventilation. The air is stale, and dehumidifier and ventilation in the bathroom don't help :( The humidity also obviously rises after the bath, and dehumidifier doesn't handle it well.

Verified reviewLovely and spacious cave room with bath, modern bathroom with large bench which we appreciated. The location was excellent with views of Matera a few steps away. Breakfast was simple but delicious, plenty of desserts and focaccia to try a few different things. Overall we enjoyed the stay.
The cave room with the bath was located inside the same building as the breakfast room which meant that staff and guests began entering the adjacent room from about 7:30 and making noise which woke us up. It also didn’t feel very private walking out of our room with other guests standing in the doorway in the breakfast room looking inside our room. We only stayed one night but still not ideal. There was also naturally a humid smell in the main room but the humidifier did a good job removing that. However the bathroom had a very unpleasant smell when we came in which never fully subsided.

Verified reviewA nice place to stay in a stunning city! This is located in the historic area which we highly recommend. Breakfast was traditional and quite good with pretty view from the patio. The cave rooms were the highlight and a must do if you come to Matera.

Verified reviewThe apartment was amazing. It is clean, made with taste and it is all from stones. It’s really good if you come with your partner. We were surprised that there wasn’t a door between the bedroom and the bathroom but it’s perfect the way it is. Also the door has a window that you can open at every time and watch the view from there. It is magical because you see the Sassi part of Matera. If we have time we will come back again. Also we are really thankful for the recommendations the staff gave us. Recommendations for good restaurants and places where to go.
I have only one suggestion and it is for the breakfast. Maybe it’s better to have not only food from dough and fruit, but to have boiled eggs and some sliced prosciutto or some sliced meat typical for Italy.

Verified reviewThe room was amazing-Ice room, and the bathroom was one of the most beautiful i have had. The fact that it was built in stone gives it such a nice impression. Be aware that you will live in a cave like room, so of course the air will be very humid-but they do have dehumidifier
They could work more on the breakfast

Verified reviewSo we booked this room as our expensive honeymoon stay for a few nights. The room is really amazing being in the cave, the thought that went into the layout was great for a couple, however, the comfort of this place was terrible. I understand a cave might be a bit stuffy but I figured with the facilities being more “upscale” it would be okay.
To start, the bed was damp the entire time. I have sensory issues so this was a big deal to me. It also took away from the “honeymoon” feel because we felt like we were sleeping in a swamp. The bedding also had stains on it. For the price of the stay, I would recommend the hotel to purchase a larger dehumidifier that constantly runs. The second big thing is the hot water for the shower did not work but it worked for the sink and the bath tub. The bathtub did have a bunch of dead bugs in it so I had to rinse it out before use but that didn’t bother me too much. The shower area could use something on the floor because with the steam, the entire floor gets wet in the room and it just adds so the moisture problem and get slick. Now we were not able to meet our host due to missing our bus so we had to do self check in. When we were in Italy each place had a quirk to get things to work properly so I am not sure if maybe there was a secret to the hot water. The location is amazing and the breakfast is okay. You are really there for the location. I don’t think I would stay here again due to the moist bed. It was too much for me and I slept on towels that soon became damp as well. The price of the room was a bit high for the facilities in my opinion. P.s. the 12 euro tiny bottle of wine was funny. I was wondering how many people open it not knowing it cost that much. I would recommend taking that away because it is a bit tacky if you do not have a whole mini bar and only that small bottle. We thought it was cute and gave us the honeymoon feel until I noticed a price tag on it.

Verified reviewView from our room (Aria) of the doumo is one that will stay with us for a long time. Large accommodation finished to a high standard, smart bathroom ... and that view!
"Sometimes it happens" isn't what you want to hear after waiting 2 hours to be given a code to get into your room. We didn't receive the welcome information that is normally sent out, because our name hadn't been passed to the agent that coordinates guest bookings on behalf of the owner. Multiple messages and calls later and that was the non-apology we got.

Verified reviewThe views were amazing
The bed sink and the middle due to not having the correct support. There was mold growing in the shower. Irene did not like it when I told her that the air conditioning was not working and she wouldn’t come up and help me fix it. We paid for a room with two king beds and only received a room with one king bed. However, there was an additional bedroom with a bed inside of that room, but she wouldn’t open it to us. It’s a cute place overall, but not worth it.

Verified reviewBeautiful location, comfortable room, very fun design, good breakfast.
The amenities are getting run down, the lid on the bathroom garbage can was broken and the cord on the light was broken. I have stayed at 5 Elementi several times and it fells like they aren't doing basic maintenance.
