How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewStaying at Aque Cave was magical. We stayed in the junior suite which was very spacious and well optioned with amenities. The location was amazing in the heart of the Sassi close to all the sights and restaurants. The breakfast was delicious with plenty of options. Most of all the team were fantastic. The communication with Paola was always efficient and friendly and Francesco who was on site was super helpful and always willing to assist. Rosie and Valerie greeted us each morning with a lovely smile and a cuppa 😁.
We loved everything

Verified reviewWe had a great, very unique experience. Impressive rooms and very comfortable.
There was no hot water in the bath tab, so we couldn’t use it. Only the shower had hot water. Also the location is difficult to reach with the luggage and we were not given assistance during the check in.
Dear Christos, We are pleased to hear that you had an overall pleasant stay at Aque Cave and we thank you for taking the time to leave a review. However, we are both surprised and shocked by your comments regarding the luggage situation and the bathtub. First of all, check-in at our property is possible from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM. This information is clearly stated on all booking platforms, on our website, and in the many informative emails we send to our guests. Despite this being clearly communicated — and reiterated in our direct messages — and although your arrival time was not affected by any external factors such as flight schedules, you chose to arrive at 7:56 PM, just four minutes before check-in officially ends. By that time, the road located just 30 meters from our reception (where you could have conveniently parked and unloaded your luggage) had already become a restricted traffic zone, effective from 8:00 PM. We informed you of this, yet you still decided to arrive at that time, which meant parking further away and walking a short 4-minute distance to reach us. We would expect that anyone traveling to Matera, especially to stay in its historic center (a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993), would understand that ancient roads and stairways are part of the experience. Regardless, we always inform our guests in advance and recommend bringing light luggage and wearing comfortable shoes. Upon your arrival, you were welcomed and assisted. I asked for your identification documents, accompanied you to your room, and provided all the necessary information regarding the room, breakfast, as well as nearby bars and restaurants. I also sent you a list of these places, complete with links to their menus and descriptions. You reacted positively to all this information, even responding with a heart. If, however, the assistance you are referring to concerns your luggage, we are honestly stunned and incredulous to read that two young, healthy individuals like yourselves expected a 7-months pregnant woman to carry your four suitcases to your room, and that this left you disappointed. We have never encountered such a situation before and we find it truly disconcerting. Regarding the bathtub (which of course works perfectly), we are surprised that you never reached out to request assistance. We would have been more than happy to help and show you that, by simply turning the mixer lever to the left, you could have enjoyed the bathtub as well. It seems you chose instead to leave a misleading review several days after your departure rather than ask for help during your stay. It is rather unreasonable to assume that we would design a system where hot water is available for the sink and shower but not for the bathtub. We are extremely attentive to detail, and this is certainly not an aspect we would overlook. Once again, we thank you for being our guests. Kind regards, Paola

Verified reviewStunning hotel room in a very central part of Matera. All the best restaurants and attractions are only a few minutes walk. Everything about the room was luxurious including a very good sound system. The rooms are naturally cooler but the internal air con was an added bonus.
I honestly have no complaints. There’s nothing they could do better.

Verified reviewThis property was amazing, even better than the pictures portrayed! The place was spacious, clean, and just incredible. The owners have put a lot of attention to detail from the decor to the utility of everything inside. The shower was nice, wifi worked well, there's a cute patio outside, good natural light, and good AC. Breakfast next door was very nice and included fruit, pastries, sliced meats, juices, coffee, bread, and jams. The location was very nice as well. While tucked away in the corner of the old town, it has restaurants just down the steps and a plaza with a beautiful view just a few mins away. Last, the owners were very helpful in providing recommendations in town and around the Puglia region.
Hauling luggage up the steps wasn't the funnest thing to do but it was manageable and worth it. Plus, you're in Matera so steps are to be expected.

Verified reviewThe design and decor was stylish , atmospheric, comfortable and really practical. The shower was huge and the toiletries supplied were comprehensive and good quality. The breakfast was excellent and you could either have it at a table outside or in the dining room which was in a cave room. Both the owners Paola and Francesco were very happy to help with places to see and where to eat. They even followed up after our stay with tips on things to do on the remainder of the trip. The location was excellent with most sights within 10-15 minutes distance. Matera is tricky to drive in and park but Paola suggested a secure car park out of town with a shuttle service which made for a stress free trip.
Nothing at all.
