Giuseppe's tips and warm welcome to Matera made all the difference. We also adored the breakfast experience with our little table under a tree in the patio and our autonomy to make things. It's a gorgeous room.

You MUST get a taxi to get to the hotel. Walking in an out of the historic centre with luggage is not a joke!

Beautiful and charming! Ideal for a romantic staying. Authentic cave house, in a very centric location, close to restaurants and other facilities. The owner was very friendly and gave excellent recommendations and guidance. He went the extra mile to make our staying more comfortable, including keeping our luggage after check out and sorting a taxi for us. We got the room with spa and a private breakfast area. Totally recommended for a romantic getaway ❤️

There was nothing we didn’t like!

The property was situated right in the heart of Matera- being able to walk around then return for an hour to recharge was great! The room was nice and cool with lots of products for us to make our own breakfast at a time which suited us. Giuseppe was a fantastic host and really took the time to talk us through the map of Matera and point out some nice places to eat which we tried out! It was also nice to be able to make use of the terrace in the morning and evening as well as store our luggage at the property on the day of departure. Matera is such a beautiful city and we had a fantastic stay.

We had a truly wonderful stay at Dimore dei Mercanti. The room was exceptional – beautifully designed, comfortable, and full of character. One of the highlights was enjoying a delicious breakfast in the charming courtyard. Giuseppe was an outstanding host. Very cozy and beautiful room. Bed was super comfortable, amazing shower with good water pressure, coffee machine, fridge, small table. Everything that you need to have an unforgettable stay. Very quiet location, with restaurants 2min walking distance. Giuseppe was amazing, he gave us many tips and made us feel really at home

For elderly guests with limited mobility, request a room with fewer stairs (though there are some stairs for each, as these houses are built into rocks so access is naturally not on a perfect level). For one of the rooms there was also a shower with the glass door next to the bed so less privacy if that is an issue for guests, but you can always request one of the other rooms.

Located right in the heart of the old town, this is an ideal place from which to explore the Sasso. Guiseppe was highly responsive on WhatsApp and provided clear instructions in perfect English. His wife, Adriana, helped us to check in and from then everything was smooth. Guiseppe also went out of his way to help us to organise a tour of the Sasso on the day of our arrival. We had three rooms at Dimore dei Mercanti, each with access to a balcony to have breakfast or to sit out in the evening, with good bathrooms and amenities such as air conditioning, a coffee machine and fridges, as well as fruit, bread and spreads for a DIY breakfast.

He went above and beyond to ensure we had a perfect visit. Great location in the old Sassi. Beautifully restored stone cave rooms opening onto a shared courtyard. Nice room, nice bed, nice linens, good breakfast, very helpful owner! Giuseppe will greet you and tell you what to see and do. And he reserved dinner for us and a tour. We highly recommend a tour to understand the history of Matera — a mysterious, beautiful and fascinating place. Giuseppe advised that we see the old ancient cistern - it is really remarkable.
