How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe property is fantastic. The location, view, comfort of room, garden, terrace and breakfast - all exceptional. I didn’t know what to expect of the facilities being in one of the oldest cities in the world however I couldn’t have been happier with the accommodation. If driving you must park out of the town and bring luggage in on foot. This is standard if you are staying in the sassi but a tip From us is to travel light or leave bulky luggage in the car (if you park in a secure paid car park). The streets are tricky to navigate and it’s easy to get lost when trying to locate for the first time so having a small bag or back pack is best. The property provided shower cap, shampoo, body wash and dental kit which was a bonus. Shout out to the hosts - very friendly and helpful and generous breakfast. Key access is via a chip in a wristband which is convenient. Shower is in the main bed/living area (not in bathroom) as pictured which is unusual but was not a problem for us, but be aware. Garden area is tranquil and private and terrace is lovely to see the town light up. Finally bed linen good quality and bed comfortable.
Nothing.

Verified reviewIt was a beautiful room and very clean. The room looked exactly like the photos so we knew exactly what to expect.
It was very hot when we stayed in Matera and the air conditioning was struggling to keep up so the room was a bit warm for us. But otherwise we had a wonderful stay!

Verified reviewThe location of the property was good. We arrived by 1pm to the property, it was mid day in July scorching sun and there is no one at the hotel reception, it’s closed and we called the hotel and they said they are available at the reception only during check in and checkout/breakfast hours. The lady arrived after an hour by 2pm and we had to wait outside at a nearby restaurant where we stopped for lunch because we had nowhere to go. We parked the car outside the ZTL zone and it was a 10min walk to the property the last 5 mins walk is through stairs which are quite slippery. The room itself is nice & clean with free WiFi, 2 small water bottles and AC and the views from rooftop terrace & the garden are really nice. The breakfast option is a nice addition to the room. There are lots of restaurants nearby and the property is just a 10-15 min walk to the other popular photo spots.
Parking costed 20€ (10€ per night) and a 10min walk to the property in the hot sun with the luggage. Breakfast is very basic should add more options.
Thank you for your review, but we need to clarify a few things. Check-in and check-out times are clearly indicated during the booking process, so if you arrive outside of those hours, you can't be sure that someone will be present at reception, as it's not a hotel but a guesthouse with no 24-hour reception service. Before arriving, we had agreed over the phone to check in early at 2:00 PM, so it was your choice to arrive at 1:00 PM and wait in the area (in the heart of the Sassi).

Verified reviewThe location is incredible, bang in the center of Matera and it is one of the best views in Matera! The roof garden on top with the view is huge and really unique! The room was spot clean and the bathroom as well, and the outdoor private balcony was so nice! The staff super friendly and helpful! The hotel is brand new and it's super nicely done! I highly recommend it!
The shower in the bedroom might be a little uncomfortable if you are travelling with friends but you can alternate in the room when showering, so it's ok!

Verified reviewThe room at Giardini di Luce was nice and charming, though there a bit of humidity in the room. That said, the accommodation really captures the authentic style of Matera, which is such a beautiful city. We loved the garden and the terrace—they were both wonderful spots to relax. Our host was very kind and welcoming. Breakfast was decent and a good way to start the day. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and appreciated the unique atmosphere.

Verified reviewBeautiful room in the Sassi. So comfortable and stylish. Absolutely spotlessly clean. Slept like a log both nights. We had a wonderful breakfast both mornings and our hostess Brunella was extremely friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend Giardini di Luce if you’re staying in beautiful Matera.

Verified reviewOur stay was absolutely wonderful! The location couldn't have been better—right in the heart of Sassi di Matera, with easy access to everything this historic city has to offer. One of the highlights was the stunning view over the city, both during the day and beautifully lit at night—it truly felt magical. The room was perfect: clean, stylish, and thoughtfully arranged. The bed was comfortable, providing a great night's sleep after exploring the city. We also really enjoyed the breakfast! Overall, it was an unforgettable experience. Highly recommended!

Verified reviewThe room was very tranquil & stylish. Well designed and thought-out (USB ports next to the beds etc). Excellent view from our terrace to the hillside opposite, it was magic at night time. We left our car at Welcome Matera parking for 2 nights (pre - book online). It was a short walk from there. Everything was perfect.

Verified reviewThe accommodation is beautiful, with a wonderful garden and terrace. We had a delicious breakfast included with the best cappuccino I have ever tasted. Brunella was very responsive and helped us with any questions we needed.
The only thing is that the shower was in the room, not in the bathroom. But just choose another room.
