How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Verified reviewOur stay was enjoyable overall. The location was ideal and the facilities were clean and comfortable. Owner was friendly and accommodating. The only minor issue we encountered was a layer of dust on the bedside tables, shelf and other surfaces. A quick dust-up would have made the room feel even more welcoming.

Verified reviewCentrally located and with the owners' help, we managed to park very close to the property. We had an initial issue which was resolved succesfully and satisfactorily with the owner's help and we appreciate their kind and well meaning action. We have become friends since. Not everyone turns out to be like them and this is something one definitely appreciates.
Slightly small in comparison to previous places we stayed at. Also it would have been nice if there was an electric kettle at least to make coffee in the morning.

Verified reviewThe sweet old neighbour lady helped us identify the correct dor. Her vigilance made us feel extremely safe. The place was spotless with a nice view. We also had a parking spot. Unlike the other places in Sicily, this one was very quiet.
We have no complaints.

Verified reviewVery clean. Good location (for us) as close to bars/restaurants used by locals. Also good for downhill walk taking in all the sites with local frequent (and cheap) bus service back up to Modica alta. Excellent communication from the owners ensuring a smooth arrival and stay.
Aircon wasn't great.
Thank you so much for the nice review. In fact I found the air conditioner set with the fan at minimum speed. This may have influenced the effectiveness of the cooling. In those days it was really very hot. I hope this did not influence your stay, if you reported it to me directly I could check and change the room if necessary. See you next time in Modica.

Hi Chiara! Thanks for your review! I'm very happy that you enjoyed your stay at L'Altra Modica. We have created a place with small, welcoming and cheap rooms. We are in Modica Alta, on the top of the hill behind the San Giorgio Cathedral (about 700 meters going up). Modica Alta is really the most ancient part of Modica although the main street with touristic shops is down in Modica Bassa. For you it was a negative factor but consider that our area is much quieter. Thanks again and see you next time!

Verified reviewLocation good but the local shops and restaurants are all closed on a Sunday. As I had no supplies and no way of obtaining any the host kindly drove me to the nearest supermarket to shop.
I stayed an extra night as I didn’t want to travel again on a Sunday, and as I was checking out the hostess/cleaner arrived and snapped “out”. It was 11 o’clock so fair but…all in all….. I felt slightly embarrassed.
Hi Christine, I am happy that you enjoyed the room so much that you decided to stay an extra day. We appreciated that. Thank you for giving a 10 score to the "Cleanliness", "Beds" and "Comfort" categories. We care a lot about the cleanliness and well-being of our guests. For the other things, however, I have to answer to defend myself and my job. Unfortunately, on Sundays the supermarkets in the old city are closed (as in all of Italy with the exception of the shopping centres). As soon as you found out, you became very angry and I didn't know how to help you. I suggested you dine at a restaurant or pizzeria, there are several places nearby open on Sundays. But you, angry as you were, yelled and slammed the room door in my face (really). I waited 10 minutes for you to calm down and I tried to knock on your door but you didn't open, so I told you (from behind the door) that if you wanted I could take you in my car to an open supermarket about 5km away. Only then did you calm down a bit. I really appreciate you mentioning this in the review, while traveling I have never had a host drive me to the supermarket and I was happy to help you. You gave a 5 rating to the item "staff", I think I don't deserve it. You also gave a 5 score for "value for money", I remind you that you paid only 30 euros per night including air conditioning, tourist tax, booking commissions, etc. Communicating with you has been very difficult for us since the beginning. Your phone did not receive calls, you did not reply to messages sent via booking (4 messages sent before your arrival). You didn't even reply to booking.com assistance which I called twice because I didn't hear from you. You didn't have any other communication tool (whatsapp or telegram). For this reason it was difficult to agree with you on arrival and check-out times and also assist you during your stay as we usually do with all guests. You texted me an hour before arriving telling me you were sitting in a bar drinking wine and not answering my questions about your arrival time. During your stay I sent you an email (the only means of communication you gave me) to ask if everything was ok. You replied telling me to meet you at the facility the next day at 12:00. I came and waited for you from 11:45 to 12:40, you weren't there and you didn't reply to my emails until the day of your departure when you asked me to stay an extra day. Communication was evidently difficult even on the morning of checkout. My wife came to clean but she heard you were inside the room and she didn't disturb you. You left the room while my wife was going upstairs to clean another room. At which point my wife asked "is she going out?" and you said yes and walked away. If you wanted to stay longer just say so. Surely the English language spoken by my wife (Sicilian) is not as perfect as that of a lady born in London in the 50s, I apologize for that.
