How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.

Noisy in the shared apartment. Couldn’t sleep well.
Dear guest, our property is a B&B with 3 independent rooms and a shared common area... and nowhere else is advertised. Especially when booking on, it was enough to read and look at the various photos to understand it. We understand that misunderstandings can happen, but we feel that a rating as low as the one you left might be a bit unfair, considering that our description and photos clearly outlined the nature of our establishment. Verified reviewSuper clean and conveniently located studio room. Everything you need for a short stay. Located in modern city, but short distance from historic Sassi neighborhood, so very walkable. Excellent communication with host Raffaella. Italian breakfast is at the coffee bar a block away.
No negatives really. Studio not super large so best for one person or couple. Dog at corner loves to bark!

Check in, I booked with them as it said that it was 350 metres from the station I was just staying 1 night in Matera I travel alone and being older you do not want to be searching for your accomdation. It is not 350 metres it is very much further than that also very difficult to find I had to take a taxi and the driver also struggled to find it. On arrival I found a locked door, and searched for the lock box I did not know that they were inside, as there was no way of knowing. Other guests arrived they also did not know. A resident of the building arrived and kindly let us enter, I then had a nightmare time trying to get someone to give me the code for the lock box, they kept saying that they had to have documents before they would give the code. I am 68 exhausted from searching for this place and they won't let me into my room, older people are not that tech savy. When a girl did turn up she was rude and blamed me for being earlier than i said i would. The kitchen is very poor no kettle just a small induction hob with no instructions on how to use it.
We would like to express some considerations regarding the recent experience with you. The guest in question requested access to the property before the scheduled check-in time (3 pm), despite this being clearly indicated on our website and in previous communications. As a B&B, we do not have a 24-hour reception service, so it is essential that guests inform us in advance of any special needs. We tried to contact the guest to inform them of the check-in time and instructions for early access, but they did not respond to our messages. Upon arrival, they demanded access to the property without respecting the rules and procedures established... Furthermore, the guest claims that the kitchen is not functional, but the kitchen is a relaxation space where guests can find everything they need, and the cooking surface is perfectly functional with instructions in both Italian and English... We are not responsible for your free interpretations... We also believe it is essential to highlight that our rates are commensurate with the services offered, and we strive to continually improve our offer every day. However, it is crucial that guests respect the rules and the people working in the property, as unpleasant episodes often occur. This work is our daily bread, so we would not have any reason to clash with our guests, but it is clear that, as with everything in life, collaboration and respect are necessary... elements that are often lacking, unfortunately. Fortunately, these are isolated cases, and we are proud of our 10 years of activity and the satisfaction of many guests. We therefore advise those with special needs to consider hotel structures more suited to their requirements. We are willing to work to improve our offer and guarantee a positive experience for our guests, but it is essential that guests also respect the rules and the people working in the property. Verified reviewThe location is excellent — close to everything you'd want. The rooms are also well-appointed, clean, and comfortable, which made for a relaxing stay. Contactless check-in was very convenient.
The walls are quite thin, so noise from neighboring rooms can be an issue at night.

Breakfast, a cappuccino and a croissant, was very good but off-site so it’d be nice if that was clear when booking. If you’re checking out early then the bar wouldn’t be open. The payment method was unusual, an invoice sent with payment online on an outside platform. It didn’t accept our 2 Italian cards but only our French one so it would have been nice to know this beforehand as well.
Hi, do you know that you booked on Booking with a rate without breakfast??? We are not a B&B but a guest house and breakfast is not provided on site. I thought I was doing a welcome and kind thing by leaving you some free vouchers but apparently that wasn't the case... I would also like to point out that we use a very cutting-edge electronic invoicing system and fortunately we have never had any problems and if you had had any difficulties you could have made the payment another way and you could have communicated it to me without problems. There is always a solution to everything and it is not necessary to point out everything.
