How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewLa Giara is a lovely place with a comfy, welcoming atmosphere. The room was small and simple, but clean and had everything I needed for a brief stay. Breakfast on the roof terrace is marvellous, with a fantastic view. The location is very handy, not even 10 minutes walk from the port and just as easy for a hike round the vulcano.

The accommodations offered compact chambers, immaculately maintained. Thoughtfully designed for rest, they did not feature a table or chair. Guests were invited to proceed directly to their rooms, as an interior common area was not available for inclement weather. The morning repast presented a simple selection, while the coffee provided was of notable quality.

Verified reviewEverything about this place was absolutely perfect. Firstly, its location is great, it's just few minutes from the port, up to 10-15 minutes to the beach, there are 2 good supermarkets just a minute from there, right opposite to the accomodation is great gelateria and it is even on the way to the summit od the vulcano. Secondly, it looks absolutely beautiful and marvelous to the last detail. Rooms were really clean and beds were comfortable. And the whole staff was extremely nice and helpfull, they were at our service the whole time. We will stay here again for sure, if we come back. Thank you for the perfect experience.

Verified reviewVery nice place on Vulcano. Close to the trail up the Vulcano and not far from the Harbour/town center. Breakfast was freshly made - fresh cornetti and fruit - and served on the rooftop patio.
At times a bit complicated communication with staff/manager? - maybe we were just there at a stressful time. Were not asked for cornetti preference unlike other guests, checking in/out required going through reception which was not always there. However, the staff did everything to accommodate us and were very friendly! Would definitely stay there again.

I'm bit surprised about what you wrote about cornetti, i remember at the check-in there wew also 3 couples came 30 seconds before you and i was alone in the reception, I thought it was better to accomodate everyone in the shortest time possibile, as i did. I also gave a free up-grade about the room you booked, it is too strange you did not report and sayd nothing at all. About staff/manager/reception i would like to clarify that we are NOT an HOTEL as you wrote thinking about open 24h reception. Verified reviewGreat location, beautiful terrace on top of the property with a view to the volcano. Gelateria across the road makes amazing granite. Room had everything we needed.
It was difficult to dry the beach things in the room as it was rather humid.

Verified reviewLa Giara is an extremely charming, comfortable and good value hotel. Location is excellent near the port with close access to both beaches, local food shops, restaurants and of course walks to the crater. The long Eolian style verandah has a stunning view of the vulcano and the sunny terrace has views of the sea. Owners and staff were very attentive and helped to make my stay very enjoyable. Breakfast was very ample with a range of offerings. I believe they also have self contained apartments nearby which would be suitable for longer stays. Vulcano itself offers a unique experience not found in other parts of Italy.
Nothing. As it was low season I was made aware that breakfast wasn't being served everyday.

Verified reviewThis is a really friendly, exceptionally clean accomodation in a stylish and authentic Sicilian guest house. Location is excellent, only a couple of minutes from the port, shops, restaurants, beaches and the path to the crater is close as well. The owner, Manfredi is a perfect host! The terraces on the ground floor and the roof are great too! We really enjoyed our stay here! Highly recommended!
Our room was a bit noisy sometimes in the morning but this didn’t really bothered us as apart from this, La Giara is a perfect place!
