Valentino was amazing. Great restaurant recommendations really helpful and friendly and a lovely room. But the best thing was the view and Valentino offered drinks on the terrace each evening to take in the sunset. Wish we had stayed longer.

It was all great.

Spectacular location in a quiet residential part of town. The Torretta ai Sassi has an unparalleled view of city of Matera and the river flowing through the canyon below, all from the doorstep of each room. Hostess Valentina went out of her way to make sure all our needs were taken care of – such as meeting us and getting us settled, helping us find free parking, telling us history of the city and neighborhoods, and even procuring for us a table at a fully booked popular restaurant. Having wine and appetizers on the terrace at sunset was a highlight experience not to be missed! It was delicious and so romantic -- watching the shadows on the ivory buildings of Matera fade to a winking collection of warm lights under a star filled indigo sky. The terraces outside each room were wonderful for morning coffee, or a cool drink in the afternoon with a good book. Our cave room was so fun and remained a delightful cool temperature in the heat of the day. The room was clean, comfortable and well stocked. Restaurants, markets and all the major sights are within easy walking distance. Highly recommended! All around our favorite hotel of our entire vacation. We have so many great memories of Torretta ai Sassi, we hope to return.

Valentina & Francesco were wonderful hosts. Easy close parking and directions to the accommodation and such a warm welcome. Wonderful aperitif organised by them both where we watched the sunset and Matera light up. They sat with us and we honestly appreciated their time and friendship. They told us all about how their amazing Villa was transformed into this magical place.

This property is perfect!

This property is truly amazing. Set high up on the edge of the Sassi, it has incredible views of the old town and ravine. Anytime of day it is hard to look away as the view is magical. The accommodation is very well appointed, private, very comfortable and secure. The private terrace is large, has an incredible view and is perfect anytime of the day. The place is within walking distance to the town centre but also accessible by car. Hosts Valentina and Francesco are generous with their time, information, care and are the perfect hosts. I suggest taking them up on the evening aperitivo and wine as it is truly superb. 5 stars all round!

There’s nothing to improve on.

Our host Valentina gave us directions from the carpark and met us outside the property. She was very welcoming and showed us around our room and gave us lots of information about the area. Our room was beautiful and had a fantastic view across Matera and the ravine below. A walk of a little over 5 minutes took us into the heart of the old town. Valentina left us a breakfast box each day which was a great way to start our day.

Valentina is the most wonderful host. The property is beyond comfortable and beautiful. The location of the hotel is perfect, close to all attractions and restaurants. The view from my room was absolutely breathtaking. Matera is a magical place to visit, staying at Torretta ai Sassi will make it even more special. I can’t wait to go back.

If I could give a 11 or 12 out of 10 I would. The location is breathtaking and Valentina goes above and beyond with recommendations for dinner (even booking if you want) where to go and what to see. Area is private quiet but in centre of the Sassi area. Quiet courtyard to watch the views and have a grazing board dinner was magical.

Not really a complaint, but there is little space to spread out. The only shelve is filled with coffee machine, kettle, cups, glasses and other useful accessories. The halfmoon tables are tiny. For two people and more than one night, it might be tight. And it is some walking distance from the center

Very nice, romantic setting with beautiful views on the old city. Very quiet, no city-noises. The terrace is private, that is, each room has its private corner. If everybody enjoys the evening outside talking, it might no longer be so quiet. Matera is an incredibly interesting town to explore, above ground and underground .

We stayed in the cave room, which was both unique and full of charm. Valentina is a wonderfully dedicated host who made our stay incredibly comfortable. She was always available for any questions and went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. Highly recommended for a memorable stay in Matera!

THE VIEW! Probably the best in Matera. The room (unique cave style itself) I stayed in had a kind of private terrace, and the view of the town, the valley, the river, and the mountains—with a beer or coffee in hand—was the most beautiful scenery and best cozy, relaxing time in my life. And of course, the innkeeper, Valentina's service was perfect and very thoughtful.

Nothing really, but if I had to be a nit picker I would say the pillows are a bit hard, and we prefer a freshly cooked breakfast, or at least a cornetto and capiccino, so we opted out of the breakfast offer.

Excellent location just at the edge of the Sassi with a beautiful view over them, but at the same time close enough to be able to find parking outside the ZTL area. Place was super cosy and very clean, shower had excellent pressure and fittings working perfectly.

Great location and wonderful host. The view from the terrace over Matera stunning. Beautiful and clean cave room! You have to experience it. Valentina and Francesco were wonderful hosts and very helpful. We were given all the information that helped us easily find all places and spend a short but wonderful time. I would definitely recommend Torreta ai Sassi! We will definitely return there again.

Torretta Ai Sassi is an amazing place, and I would highly recommend it. The location is excellent, with unbelievable view of Matera from the private terrace, and very close to the center of Matera, a short walking distance. Inside the cave room you will find all modern conveniences, very quiet, great bed, good shower Valentina the host was very helpful with recommendations for parking ( we found free safe parking 4 minutes walk from the Torretta), restaurants and sightseeing. Matera is a must to see, and we would visit Matera again, we would stay at Torretta Ai Sassi. Thank you Valentina

The amazing view from the terrace looking back into the Sassi and the fact that it was dug into the rock as a cave, made for a memorable stay. Host was very passionate about the property and the location which added to our experience.

The breakfast box was full of sweet, processed foods. I would not opt for this again. There are quite a few steps down and up to the property which is not unusual in Italy, therefore light luggage would be recommended.

We really enjoyed our stay here with the magnificent views from our terrace. Our host Valentina could not have been more helpful. She showed us on the map all the places we should visit, she also booked dinner reservations for us for both evenings. They were not tourist traps which really appealled to us. The location was perfect and near to everything. Opening the gate into the property was like entering a secret garden.
