How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Kitchen so can make your own food, and one or two local restaurants in the village. Sue the owner is absolutely lovely!

Verified reviewBeautiful, lush property with lots of personality! Sue knows how to put together a hostel! The fishing beaches nearby are lovely. We stayed here as a compromise between my desire to stay somewhere off the beaten path, and my partners desire to spend time in Negril. It was a short drive to Negril and I really felt like I got to see a different side of Jamaica.
The roads getting here are rural—that means largely single lane through some sharp curves. Not actually a problem, but something to consider if you are a nervous driver!
Dear Allison Thank you so much for your fantastic review! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your stay in our beautiful, lush property and that you found it full of personality. Sue truly has a knack for creating a welcoming atmosphere in our hostel, and we’re glad it resonated with you! It’s wonderful to hear that you were able to balance your desire for an off-the-beaten-path experience while still being close to Negril. We’re pleased that you felt you got to see a different side of Jamaica and that you enjoyed the lovely fishing beaches nearby. We appreciate your feedback about the rural roads leading to us. While they may have some sharp curves, we believe they add to the charm of the journey! Thank you for highlighting that, and for considering it for future guests. We hope to welcome you back soon for more scenic adventures and memorable experiences. Safe travels until then! One Love ... Sue

Verified reviewSue was very friendly. She said several times “Anything you want just ask me? Which makes you feel more at ease in a strange place. This property is a quiet place if you want peace and quiet. The birds sing every day and saw humming birds regularly on tree outside my room. The beach is about 10/15 mins walk away. Sue also took me to Negril beach which was fantastic.
Nothing really, only that shops are quite a walk away. But Sue has a small shop store on premises that gets you by.
Thanks so much Patricia for your outstanding review. A great help for future guests who are looking for peace and quiet in the Jamaican countryside by the sea. Hope to see you here again one day again. One Love .... Sue x

Verified reviewThe place gives off a relaxed atmosphere. Sue is very welcoming and helpful. The people from town are kind and generous. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, away from busy streets and resorts, this would be a good choice for you.
There is a limited amount of facilities in the vicinity. Having your own means of transportation would be advisable.

Verified reviewI liked the community. It was safe and friendly. Far away from the maddening crowds! I loved the sound of the waves pounding on the rocks - dramatic. The sunsets. A real part of Jamaica. The tranquility. The flora and fauna - the wildlife according to my 8 yo grandson (on a video call) - Birds, butterflies, frogs, lizards, and other species and plants. The geology of the sea rocks looks fascinating with imprinted fossils on the exposed rocks.
Off the beaten track. It's not easy to get around. Eating out needs planning. The sea is ok for splashing around rather than swimming. Swim shoes/old trainers are needed for going into the sea.
Thanks very much for your review Thelma, brilliant that you enjoyed the nature so much. Nice tips for future guests, always useful ..One Love ... Sue x

Verified reviewThe stay with Sue who owns Judy House Backpacker hostel Brighton. The whole experience was nice. Got my laundry done by Sister who is Sue’s right hand girl. Nice person. Remember go slow. Sue’s cabins are so well done. The inside electrical plugs have USB plugins which is nice. The lighting was done very well in cabin. Recycling is being done which I like. The washroom has been done very well. Clean towels in hamper and a place to put them in when done. Sue has a sitting area for her customers. You can get beer, eggs, water, tobacco, soups(store bought) and more. It’s on the honour system which is a normal part of hostel living. Sue’s hostel is more than a hostel. It doesn’t have a Dorm system anymore and I would say is a nice group of cabins with lovely grounds and a wonderful place to chill. O ya, there is a fully equipped outside kitchen which means cooking for oneself. Enjoy your stay with Sue
Many thanks for your very comprehensive review which had fabulous detail. Hope to see you back with us again in Lewi's Brighton. One Love ...Sue

Verified reviewSuper lovely well-thought of way of making use of the island's materials while keeping it super comfortable for usual standards of European hostel styles. Sue is always renovating and improving the place, and it's already super wonderful. Very relaxing spot, close to the water (can't swim though but can enjoy some really nice breeze).
The location was unfortunately super far from the lively city centre. And it took an hour sometimes to arrange for any of the route bikes to take us. Especially with our backpacks. We still enjoyed it though since hitch hiking was also an option (sometimes). Walking could've also been a really nice hike up to the spot where it's busier and taxis are more common, but the road is so narrow and cars sometimes drive crazy, so we didn't want to risk that option.
Many thanks for you lovely review and your positive comments. For many of our guests (and me) Judy House Brighton is fortunately 'off the beaten track' and away from the tourism hustle and bustle of the local Negril town. Driving through the pretty country roads and villages is not always something that visitors get to experience. Transport can be sorted what and when needed with notice. Motor Bikes and taxis can be booked too and yes, heavy backpacks attract an extra charge sometimes on a bike. The sea is often to deep to swim in opposite the hostel unless you are an experienced sea swimmer . But you gte to sleeps to the sounds of it every night in the quietness of our beautiful seaside location. A few minuteswalk away is Brighton Beach (Homer's Cove), a fisherman's beach where a mineral spring runs inot the sea, creating a natural clear pool to swim in when sea is calm. Driving we are 30 mins from Negril and once you are here there is so much to do, see and experience including the Blue Hole Mineral Spring close by. Brighton and its surrounding village are the real Jamaica. One Love !

Absolutely loved the property itself, you can just see how much care, love and attention to detail went into it. Great local area with lots of little things to discover (or simply unwind)

Verified reviewThis place is really a little paradise, it is pretty remote where you can experience the real jamaica and get a time out from all the noise. The people in the community are real friendly and you can connect with the locals. Sue is a great host who takes care of you and helps out with everything you need.
Nothing, you should just not that this is a quite area and no touristy party place.
Many thanks for your lovely review and for taking the time to feedback on information that will assist future guests. You were great to host and we do hope you come back to the Judy House again one day. One Love!
