Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United KingdomNothing, we loved it!
An atmospheric and magical stay which gave us a real feel for traditional, rural living in Japan. The house was beautiful, dinner and breakfast so fresh and delicious, and our host went out of his way to make us feel welcome. This was a highlight of our trip that we would definitely recommend to others.

ThailandWe loved our stay at the Samurai-era house—it was a wonderful, authentic experience of the Japanese countryside as it was in the olden days. We opted for both breakfast and dinner, and both were excellent: simple but delicious meals made with ingredients from the surrounding area. Although the host couldn't speak much English, he used a translator to share the story of the house and what life was like for farmers during that era, which added so much to our experience. I only wish we could have stayed for more than one night. Not a negative, but do take note that the facility only offer shared bathroom.

SpainLovely experience. Hirasawa was a very nice host and tried to make us feel welcome and comfortable. The house was comfortable and extremely clean, and the traditional breakfast was delicious! Please note: We would highly recommend having a car if you visit it. Access by bus is very limited (only runs twice a day), taxis from Takayama are difficult to find and very expensive and unless you have a car, there is little you can do/see.

We loved arriving at the house as the landscape really made us feel like we were in My Neighbour Totoro. It was magical and the house is in front of a pond and next to a temple. It felt like we were remote from the world yet in a very comfortable, traditional house. The host was very welcoming and cooked for us in the central foyer, which was a great experience. Overall I would recommend this unique experience. We could hear the frogs croak all night and it was magical.

Everything was perfect, the house is extraordinary, the host is incomparably kind, we were able to take a bath as in the old days and eat on wood-fired udons. Totemo oishi katta desu! 😋 The host has an app to translate into any language to chat with you, explain many things and also if you need anything, you can ask easily, he is extremely helpful! 🤗 Breakfast was excellent too! 😍 One of our best experiences in Japan! If you want to experience a unique moment, go for it! ❤️

IsraelThe stay was truly exceptional. Our host was super friendly and explained everything about the historic house, the facilities and the food. We stayed on the top floor and slept on tatami mats, ate a traditional breakfast cooked on the hearth on the bottom floor and engaged in (google translated...) conversation with our host. I cannot recommend this location enough - truly an unforgettable experience!

United StatesWe loved staying in the country side and having authentic home cooked Japanese dinner from our host that we were able to purchase on-site. The breakfast was included with the stay and was also wonderful. We sat around a traditional Japanese burner and had delicious food. We even got yogurt fresh made from goats milk! The host family was so friendly and kind. They made the time spent there special.

CanadaThe only thing I can think of to improve the experience would be to post a photo of what the house looks like in winter. We were looking for the red roof seen in the photos, but it was very much covered in snow in the winter, which was very cool!

United StatesHad a great time staying with Hirasawa and his family, he was a very friendly and helpful host. Helping us coordinate parts of our plans and comminicating with taxis. The food he provided was great and all local to the area. His 2 daughter running around the house were so cute and made the stay very fun & lively. Great location in between Takayama and Shirakawago making it ideal to visit both locations while being able to stay in the mountains.

The host was kind and helpful with all our needs. The best place to stay if you want to experience traditional Japanese style living. We came in December and the weather was -5 degrees outside but inside the house it was warm and comfortable. We had the most authentic and traditional breakfast provided by the host, and he was most helpful with advice on places to visit. The old tradition house is beautiful and the lounge room was perfect to just relax, read a book and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

United States"what could have been better?" ... staying longer! [no complaints whatsoever ... & certainly a highlight of our overall fantastic trip to japan]
AMAZING!!! at the time of our booking, this super special ryokan was rated an unbelievable 10.0, so we arrived with VERY high expectations ... which were, in fact, surpassed. the setting is very rural & beautiful -- certainly best to arrive by car -- & the antique house is authentic, aesthetic, well preserved & truly something to admire. best of all, the family is VERY warm & hospitable ... making u feel right at home & a part of their everyday lives -- creating a truly unique & memorable encounter. eating around the hearth was delicious & enchanting ... & its central position w/in the house adds a mild smoky scent to the place, which i found pleasantly enjoyable. certainly not inexpensive, but highly recommended ... as that once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience not to be missed! ps-> u're apt to taste a dairy delight or 2 from their goats ... try to go -- by car -- to the nearby place where they milk them

Our stay at Chie and Satoshi's charming guesthouse was an unforgettable experience. Nestled in the serene beauty of the Japanese countryside, this haven offered more than just comfortable accommodations; it provided a genuine taste of Japanese hospitality. From the moment we arrived, we were enveloped in warmth and kindness. Chia, Satoshi, and their two daughters welcomed us like family, making us feel instantly at home. Their genuine care and attention to detail created a truly special atmosphere. The guesthouse itself was a delightful traditional Japanese house with everything you need. The peaceful surroundings invited moments of tranquility with traditional breakfast, rooms, and baths. We love it! Beyond the physical comforts, it was the heartfelt interactions with the family that made our stay truly memorable. We shared meals, laughter, and cultural insights, forging bonds that extended far beyond our time there. The family's dedication to providing a memorable experience for their guests was evident in every aspect of our stay, always going far and beyond to make us feel home. If you seek an authentic Japanese experience that goes beyond the ordinary, we wholeheartedly recommend this delightful guesthouse. It's not just a place to stay, it's a place to create cherished memories. We definitely will come back!❤️
