How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews

All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.

Verified reviewThe onsen facilities were nice, the view from the room was nice, and the staff were friendly and willing to help once they understood our requests. The location was fairly convenient, too, to access the Gorge.
Not enough towels in the room; a bit disorderly on the communication about things to see in the area (for example, the hotel provides maps for Akiu in the lobby, but the staff did not tell us about these; we found them for ourselves…). About Akiu in general: all the restaurants and shops open at 10am and close between 3-5pm; although we visited in summer which is the off-season, this was still an inconvenience.

Impossible to book the free shuttle, even though we called 3 days before to book (as it was advised by the property). We had to catch a local bus and pay the fee. Public baths were a bit small and had no view

The return shuttle bus between the Sendai station and the hotel were full for both the check in and check out dates. The hotel can just provide confirmation the day before the check in date. If I had known there was no shuttle, I might have considered other option because I traveled with parents who are over 70 years old.

Verified reviewThe daily breakfast from Rantei was great! Nice buffet to mix and match the different Japanese dishes. The staff were extremely helpful, with bus schedules, where to go, how to go. When we nearly missed the bus, the concierge literally ran out to flag down the bus for us. So helpful!
It does take a while to get to Sendai city. Convenient, but it takes some time. It's a great property for a getaway and onsen experience, but if you want to see more of the city, do take note.

Verified reviewThe lacto-ovo-vegetarian food is provided. We feel very sweet when we see sticker on every meal to let us no any fish inside. We all know it is very difficulty for a vegetarian to find meal without fish-related ingredients inside. Rantei's service to lacto-ovo-vegetarian is excellent and over our expectation.
We found a fruit fly swimming inside our hotpot, and we notify the waiter immediately. The waiter took a tissue to fish out the live fruit fly. We left message to the customer service, and they told us it might be a edible flower petals. We are very sure that it is a fruit fly alive swimming. We disappoint the answer from the customer service. On the other hand, a hotspot with fly inside made health concern to client. They should replace a new one. Even if they want to keep it, they should not use a melting tissue to fish out the fly. A spoon should be used in stead.

The view of the public hot spring is in average without exciting.

Verified reviewIt is a rather commercialised onsen hotel - with large operation team. The dinner was above average, yet the breakfast was just average with an easy morning buffet but not Japanese onsen cuisine. The room was old but functional. People were nice and helpful enough.

Verified reviewThe hotel is a bit old but comfortable, clean, and staff are very friendly. The breakfast is a buffet, so you can select what you want from many options. Food was good, but not spectacular.
I think the hotel could improve the ambiance of the outdoor bath since most people visit the place for the baths.
