Too far from Matsumoto for our particular journey. When booking I thought 17km as per maps, but it’s a 45 minute drive to the castle. It’s a ski lodge place to hike and get away

Lots of plastic bathroom bits and bobs, as is the case with most hotels, and lots of wasted plastic cloths for cleaning. Could look at more environmentally friendly options but this doesn’t seem to be a thing in Japan. Everything is just recycled or burned.

Loved the space and private onsen. There was a bedroom with twin beds and also a Japanese style room with futons. The futons were very comfortable and such a nice experience sleeping among the tall trees of the surrounding forest. The hotel onsen was also nice, however we didn’t spent much time at the main hotel as we had cooking facilities and all we needed at the cottage.

Took 20 minutes for the hot spring tap to turn hot, be aware that there was an extra heating fee (around $40AUD/night) and hot spring tax ($3AUD/night).

Nice, secluded cottage with lots of space.

The bathroom downstairs is not comfortable and can be renewed. Mosquito nets need to be replaced.

Nice cottage, even if a bit "old fashioned" furnitures. A lot of space inside, many monkeys in the wood.

No soft seating. No coffee, which is not uncommon in Japan. Outside the resort itself, it was at least a 10 minute drive to any restaurants, cafes, attractions, etc. None of these were deal breakers, just observations for anyone thinking about booking.

Rustic, rural, and nestled beautifully in the mountains. The private onsen was an excellent way to relax. The tatami room was really nice and comfortable for the two adults in our party who had never slept this way. We were visited twice by monkeys, which was really fun

A million guests probably complained about the accessibility, more of a nuisance actually. The bedroom is located on the upper floor with the kitchen and toilet below, so more stairs! The cottage has air conditioning but probably need another fan coil in the bedroom but they do supply heated blankets. It would probably be pretty hot in summer.

Quiet ambience with a lively view of the mountains from the driveway. Probably would have a magnificent view of the night sky but it was full moon when we stayed. Kitchen is well equipped to indulge in the natural bounties of Japan. Also comes with its own onsen so you can avoid the crowd (and the extra fee) at the main hotel. A totally unique experience from the usual ryokans.

    nothing. perfect

Located in a residential development - resort. main hotel and then a lot of houses and chalets around it. Beautiful setting in the woods up in the foothills of the mountains. It's chillier at night than down in Matsumoto. We took 2 connected chalets. Steep entry stairs and then 2 spacious floors: a bedroom upon top, a big kitchen dining area and japanese style tatami area that could sleep 4 or 5. The tatamis area closes off. there is a bathroom with a mini onsen. Much bigger than it looked online ; we could have fitted in one chalet with full privacy. The chalet is an easy walk to the hotel which has dining and spa. You need a car and need to bring food and drink. 30 mins to Matsumoto, 2 hours to Takayama

When we arrived they didn’t have our booking which was strange as we had been communicating with the property. We arrived 20minutes after the earliest checkin time we were told to wait 40 minutes while they prepared the room nothing was offered like a drink we just had to sit and wait?? Arrived to the cottage balcony extremely dirty hadn’t been cleaned bathroom was full of mould screen door was broken and was hard to open. We sent an email to the hotel which they took 24 hours to respond by that time we gave up. Unfortunately the phone number reception gave us wasn’t correct also!!

Cottage was well equipped with plenty of space

First, I want to commend both the hotel and Booking.com. Although I made a mistake and booked an extra night past the date when changes were allowed, they kindly agreed to refund me for the last night — which I really appreciate. As for the property itself, it's located right in the middle of a forest. I imagine it's absolutely stunning in the winter, and it was already beautiful during our stay. The cabin was very spacious and comfortable — a great place to relax and enjoy nature. The only issue I encountered was with verbal communication. Over the phone, it was difficult to speak with staff since they don't speak much English. In person, it's manageable with Google Translate, but the language barrier was frustrating in two particular cases. When we arrived, two beds were missing bed linens. I couldn't explain it over the phone, so I had to drive to the lobby (just a short drive) to ask for them in person. Another small issue: we weren’t sure where to place our full garbage bags. In most hotels, you can just leave them outside the door, but here that’s not ideal because of wildlife — we even saw some monkeys, which was really cool! In any case, a simple live chat option with the hotel could really help when there are language gaps like this. One last note for Booking.com: there’s a heating fee at the property. While I was aware of the extra charge, and Booking.com did mention it, the actual amount or even an approximate range wasn't listed anywhere on the site. I personally found the details on another website, but it would be helpful if Booking.com could provide a clearer indication of this cost.

Photos were showing a nice wooden bathtub, instead we had a small plastic bathtub filled with insects. Also dying ants in the living room. No heating in the rooms, and when we used the one in the living room we were charged an extra 2000 Yen during check for "extra heating fees". Unfriendly staff. By far the worst hotel i've ever been to, especially for the high price.

    The place spacious.

There were bugs here and there, and a strange sewer like smell which weren’t really a problem for us because he expected as much. Our problem was that the person living on the cottage (private property) beside where we stayed was creepy and scary. One night we arrived around 10pm. He came running out from his house to our direction, and just stared at us one by one at close proximity with this angry look. He didn’t say a single word, but just stayed there staring at us and our car. We were really terrified because he might have had a weapon and/or could hurt us. The reception was really cooperative and tried to help us as much as they can. And while we understand that this was out of their control, unfortunately, this would be a no for us.

It was nice to experience the snow and the stars. The cottage was large, and the bath was great! There were kitchen equipment, a big heater, a Kotatsu, everything you would need for a vacation in the woods.
