Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Very friendly staff who were incredibly helpful pointing out local attractions and helping us to book a taxi. The spa is lovely with a great view of the river. Quiet location but easy to walk to the main shrines.

FranceA bit far out, walking at night felt a bit uneasy.
The staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel is a bit further out of the main city but still very accessible by foot (a bit scary at night as you have to cross the bridge going into the forest). The hotel is very nice, in a typical Japanese fashion. The rooms are very clean and quiet, overlooking the river. The onsen is private and it's a pleasure to relax in front of the river.

BelgiumThe staff were very friendly and gave us great recommendations for restaurants in the neighborhood. Our room was cosy, clean, and comfortable, making for a relaxing stay. The breakfast was tasty, and the private spa was a major bonus that made the experience even more enjoyable. Would happily stay here again.

BelgiumThe Onsen is great and is a great way to relax with a amazing view of the river rushing down. The best part are the Hotori onsen cool looking kimono's making you feel like a local. The rooms are quite basic, but are nice, clean and homely. It was our first night in Japan and gave us the impression to feel a bit like a local. Although the optional breakfast is not the cheapest, it's worth the value for money, so we ended up booking it for both mornings. The location is jus perfect: Walking distance to all main sites, while you have the feeling you're on a remote place next to a fast flowing mountain river. We came by car, so the wide parking space was much appreciated.

United StatesWe love that the Japanese rooms are truly Japanese, but we are not used to sleeping on a futon and they are quite firm for us. I am not sure anything can be done about that, but we didn't sleep very well. That's all we can think of- otherwise it was great.
We have stayed here many times. We love the location near the jizo walk and the quiet neighborhood. The onsen is lovely and the location near the river is stunning. The staff is wonderful as well.

SingaporeThe only thing was that the onsen was for one group at a time, but the fact that there are little overall guests doesn’t make it too bad

GermanyIn the bathroom there was a little bit of mold, but I guess this is hard to avoid with the humid air so close to the river.
I had a very nice stay here! The hotel is located in a very quiet and peaceful area, directly next to the river, but in walking distance to the town and bus stops. My room was facing the river and the sounds made me sleep amazingly! The onsen was very nice and it most of the time, it was free to use. The owner was also very friendly and recommended a nice restaurant for dinner! Would have loved to stay longer!

AustraliaThis was our first stay in a traditional japanese hotel and we loved every aspect. The onsen (hot spring fed spa) overlooking the river which our family could use together, the staff recommendations for local restaurants and the breakfast which even our 10 year old fussy eater enjoyed.

United StatesA sign up sheet for the onsen usage would be very helpful. Since they only have one, it was hard to know when it was going to be available to use. We tried to use it a few times when it was occupied so had to return to our room, hoping that it would be available the next time we try. A simple sign up sheet would solve this small problem.
The hotel was about a 25 minute walk from the center of town and maybe 35 minutes from the train station, but we didn't mind because the location was great. It was private, quiet, right next to the river, and close to all the temples and shrines. The facility is very clean and the staff are all super friendly. We enjoyed their onsen, but they only have one and it was on a first come first basis which was not ideal.

Recommended by a friend who has stayed here many times. It was lovely, serene and peaceful. The breakfast was worth that money but we only had it one day. A 10 mins walk to a Lawson's which has a great curry house on top. The onsen was beautiful and we used it twice. We were lucky to be the only guests for one of the nights. The hosts spoke great English and gave us restaurant recommendations in the area.

United StatesThe only thing that bothered me about the room was there was a loud vent/fan in the ceiling going constantly. It wasn't the AC as I didn't have control over it. Perhaps I should have asked the proprietress to see if you could turn it off but I only noticed at night when trying to sleep. It would have kept me up if I didn't use the provided earplugs, which you can find with the other amenities given for free at the front desk.
The proprietress was a lovely woman. She didn't speak much English but had no problem communicating everything. She gave me a map of the area and pointed out all the bus stops and recommended restaurants nearby, giving approximate travel/walking times. Very detailed and delightful! She gave me a tour of the small hotel before bringing me to my room. The location of the hotel is great, a few min walk from the main street but the area is quiet and peaceful. You're steps away from the Kanmangafuchi Abyss pathway, which is a notable point of interest in Nikko. The onsen was fantastic, especially because it's shared but private. So you can go in there on your own and lock the door so you have it to yourself for max 30 min (which is plenty). I stayed in the Japanese style room, which was simple and small but good enough for one night. Japanese style you sleep on the floor on tatami and futon, so if you're used to Western style bed then book one of those rooms. The lady did mention that after I checked out at 10am I could also leave my bags there if I needed to go out and explore. I didn't need to for my plans but it was nice to know I could.

Great little hotel/guest house in quiet location on river in Nikko. Good value. A bit further off the main road but just next door to the Kanmangafuchi Abbyss (with Buddhist statues) and easy walking distance (~20mins along interesting quiet roads) to all the Nikko shrines. Tradition Japanese rooms. Also had a small private onsen bath with river view that we were not aware of when booking.

United StatesThe hotel could probably use a bit of a freshen up, that being said, everything was scrupulously clean. The futons being a bit thicker would be lovely. The only thing that was a bit disappointing is that the onsen area had a strong bleach smell.
We loved the location of the Hotel Turtle Annex and the view from our room couldn't be any better. The welcoming staff was very nice. We only had one night there but we could tell it would be an enjoyable place to stay.
