Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

AustraliaInternet photos are not current as the public areas are a little rundown, dated and used for storage. The microwave didn't work but staff kindly heated the food in their own kitchen. Additional cost to guests for onsens. Need a car to get to food store or restaurants.
Staff friendly but needed google translator to communicate. Room clean, newly updated with comfortable futon and toilet and wash basin within the room. Enclosed area in the room with table and chairs was lovely for meals overlooking the trees. Three onsens were enjoyable and included toiletries and hairdryer. Free parking.

New ZealandVery good instructions from our hosts, both to get there and about using the onsens, etc. Lovely onsens and comfortable, quiet Japanese-style rooms in green surroundings. Snack food can be bought on site and some food delivery seemed to be possible.

IsraelWell, the hotel is far from everything (good and bad), the hotel is very clean and tide and the stuff are great but it has seen better days and feels a little old. Also you need tp think in advance about buying food in the 7/11 or going to a restaurant because of the distance of the hotel, they do offer an option of buying beer, sake, snacks and instant ramen cups
The onsens are relly nice, so is the size of the rooms. You can walkt o the lake around 20 min walk.

Beautiful location, surrounded by lovely countryside and convenient for buses. On site onsen, view of Mount Fuji (on a good day!)

FranceInformation for the arrival was missing. They didn't mention the closest bus stop is number 256. The staff was barely present, helpful but not proactive.
The onsen are very nice. The location is surrounded by tree which is great. You can see mont fuji from the entrance (when the weather is good enough). There is a ping pong table available.

AustraliaVery friendly owners, who cooked us a dinner as takeaway restaurant was closed - went an extra mile to help. Beautiful and peaceful surroundings, view on mount Fuji straight out of the door. Very close (15-20 min) walk to information centre and cruise ship ride and the lake. Mountain views out of the room. Private and free onsen that is easy to book.

CanadaLocation was a bit more rural and finding food was a challenge, especially on weekdays! (Many shops closed on Wednesday and maybe Thursday too) Not much food to buy in the ryokan. Slippers "system" could be better. It's the most "shared" thing there. I would've liked personal slippers (maybe with room number) that get cleaned after all guests. We had a 10-year-old and the yukata/kimono/slippers did not fit him. Only teen / adult sized.
A clean, new bidet in each room. A small sink in each room to fill water, wash hands and face. Shared bath/onsen, but private. Outdoor onsen is popular but the 2 indoor ones are just as nice and don't require reservation. Because there are only 8 or 9 roomful of people, 3 baths were more than plenty. It was never busy when we needed it. Staff were pleasant. View from the room was nice with large windows. Very peaceful. Close to bus stop that's 5 minutes away from Togendai station, which has the pirate ship (sightseeing cruise) and ropeway (gondola).

SingaporeTwo main points: it's a bit run down, and it's somewhat out of the way. Bit of advice--don't be fooled by Google Maps. The shorter path coming from the north involves a punishing flight of stairs. Rather, go in from the road to the South.
Very quiet and peaceful. There were three Onsen bathrooms, one of which can/should be booked in advance. The staff is friendly--went out of the way to help us. Basic English isn't a problem. While out of the way, the restaurants in the area do deliver here. The rooms are big enough to host 3 people (we are a family of 5, so, 2 rooms). Entirely enjoyed our stay there.

JapanBeing 195cm, it’s no surprise that most places weren’t built for my height, so be aware of that in general.
It felt secluded and just far enough away that we could see the stars and relax. The written and pictorial instructions for the onsen were extremely helpful as it was my first time!

GermanySome common areas need some TLC and an update. The area is quiet, so better come by car, as restaurants and supermarkets are not within walking distance (but the manager kindly offered instant ramen and/or to call restaurants, some of which even offer a pick-up service!). When Google tells you that the ryokan is accessible in 4 minutes from the nearest bus stop, it omits that this route leads you to rather steep stairs which can get somewhat slippery in wet conditions, so beware and better use the roads when walking to the ryokan, it only takes approx. 10 minutes.
Very friendly staff! The manager is well known for his piano playing skills and he plays beautifully. The rooms are spacious and equipped with all the essentials for a ryokan stay, including kimonos, tea set etc. The area is quiet, perfect for a relaxing stay. Two bus stops (#256/#258, the latter is closer despite what Google tells you) with direct bus connection (T bus line) to Odawara and Togendai stations are within walking distance.

ArubaNo breakfast facility. No restaurants or 7eleven nearby. Please come to the location well-fed and with snacks. You otherwise need to hop on a bus or in a taxi to go off-site for that. Location in a small challenge to find, but you know that already, clearly documented in the comments. But not impossible. There are two bus-stops on either side from which you can arrive at. We arrived at night, very dark, super quiet, but the winding roads leading up to the hotel are well lit. Area is super quiet. Google maps saved the day.
The private onsen was amazing. There were not a lot of guests the week we were there, so we reserved the private onsen for multiple timeslots. The room too was great, very traditional Ryokan, spacios, clean. Has everything you need. Above all, the staff-combo of mother and son were great!

AustraliaNothing, I thought the property was great as a traditional well priced ryokan
We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights at Chojuyu. We used the transfer luggage at the station to send the luggage to the ryokan so we could spend more time exploring. The ryokan is on stop Palace Hotel Mae , I wish I knew this beforehand as it was a short walk from the bus stop. We found the place at night via a local bus and 16 min walk through back alleyways. The hotel is traditional, comfortable and clean. The female owner was extremely helpful answering all my questions via Google translate. Our room had 4 futons and dining table and chairs. Which we used to eat dinner and drink tea each night. The outside bath was a wonderful experience, we loved all our baths. Overall it was a wonderful Japanese experience and highly recommend staying here while on Hakone
