How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThis stay was a highlight of my time in Japan. If you are looking for a quiet , remote stay in a wonderful old property this location is highly recommended. I took advantage of a breakfast/dinner meal plan and the food was excellent. The property is wonderfully managed and I intend to return in the Autumn.
The property is old and can be be quite cool but there is adequate heating options.Be prepared for a rural experience !
Hello Peter (^^) Thank you for your wonderful rating and comment. I truly appreciate it. I was impressed with your beautiful stay. And I am really looking forward to your visit in the fall. Until then, please stay well.

Verified reviewIt’s a traditional Japanese cabin in the mountains. The shoji screens and the zen garden made it a really relaxing and cozy visit. One of my favorite accommodations through my journey in Japan. They have WiFi, and a modern toilet. The kitchen is a bit old and not up to modern standards but it works just fine. If you want a place away from the bustling cities, and really want to relax and also get a feel for an authentic Japanese cabin I can highly recommend it. Word of advice is to get food before you arrive as it is far from any stores, but I was informed of this before arrival so I had time to plan. The hostess was super friendly and very helpful It’s an old cabin and it shows, don’t expect a newly renovated house, but it gave it an authentic feeling. There’s also no AC, but with it being in the mountains and the shoji screens it didn’t get too hot at night. Also the insects make a lot of noise Wish I stayed more than one night

Thank you mun for your high rating and review 🙏 After driving on a rough road after heavy rain, you showed me the photos with sparkling eyes and said, "I saw such a wonderful view!" It was very impressive. I think that you are someone who will have a wonderful experience no matter where in the world he goes. I am truly happy that you came to the remote area of Onyudani, stayed in an old Japanese house, and were able to interact with me. I look forward to the day we can meet again (^^) When that time comes, please tell me more about your travels!

Very hard beds
I was suddenly thinking about you guys, wondering how you're doing on your continued travels after your trip to Japan (^^). Thank you for your high rating and review. Futon beds are hard after all. In old Japanese customs, we sleep on futons laid out on tatami mats, and we've become completely accustomed to it. However, futon beds are hard compared to the custom of sleeping on a bed. I would be happy if you could record it as a memory of your old home in Japan. Please continue to take care of yourself and have a wonderful trip with your good friends. Thank you (^^)

Thank you for staying at Cominca Cocco Onyu Dani during your trip to Japan from Singapore. Verified reviewThe host was absolutely amazing. She spoke English well and did everything she could to make sure we had a good comfortable stay. Got the heater going for us, made us a fire, some hot green tea, rugged us up. The house is a very traditional old japanese house, gets cold but plenty of heating to keep us warm. The area is beautiful if you like the country area. Was a very nice contrast to the busy cities. We saw wild monkeys! Make sure you buy all your supplies before heading to the accomodation, there are no shops nearby. The host made us breakfast which was very filling and very very tasty. Thanks again and we hope to see you when we return to Japan.
We should have booked for longer.
It was a very cold day. I'm also very happy that you enjoyed the bonfire. Eating breakfast when you're hungry is the best treat (^^) I was relieved to see the two of you leaving in good spirits. Did you arrive safely in Nagano and Tokyo? I was really impressed by how interested you were and how much you enjoyed your long drive through Japan. please come to Japan again. And I would be happy if we could meet again. thank you very much.

Verified reviewWonderful experience in a traditional house in a deep mountain of Japan. The dinner and breakfast were exceptional, prepared and presented with care and love. We rented a car to get here and visited nearby small towns for shopping. The onsen nearby has good facilities, and the quality of the water was excellent. Strongly recommend if you wish to experience a traditional Japanese living and hospitality.
The roads can often be narrow, but it only takes 1.5 hours to get here
Thank you very much for using our service for two days. I'm very happy that you enjoyed the Takashima area to the fullest, not only staying at our hotel, but also going on a drive to buy alcohol, looking forward to the hot springs♨. Japanese culture shows its best qualities only when people from other countries enjoy it. But it was also the season when stink bugs appeared, so I apologize for that. please come to Japan again. There are many heartwarming places in Japan. I would be happy to see you again.

Fresh air and very quiet surrounding. You can just walk around the area and enjoy the peace. We are even been treated with Purin (プリン) by the host before we said goodbye.

Verified reviewit's a classic old Japanese house with some modern comforts. But you should not expect the same comfort level as in the modern hotel. The house does not hold warmth so it get cold in the morning if it's cold outside. There is a super friendly koi fish just behind the house and my daughter was allowed to play with the chickens. The house has lots of character and tasty breakfast was offered in the morning.
Thanks for the nice review. We were also surprised by the interest in the carp in the pond. I am very happy that you can feel the old Japanese way of life in this house. I am truly honored to have met such a beautiful and kind British family. I'm really thankful to you.
