How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt's a little unusual to stay in a more traditional setting with tatamis and futon - but everything else is modern. The room is sufficiently spacious, the kitchen and bath are modern. It's next to the main road of the small town - but my earplugs were able to tune out almost all of the traffic (it's not comparable to a main road in Osaka).
Thank you for staying at Chotokuji Temple Lodgings.

Verified reviewThe host/owner was very kind and helpful. We needed to check out early hours in the morning and required help to organise a taxi in this small town, which the owner did for us. The place is clean and tidy as advertised, great value for the comfort provided.
Could have mentioned there are stairs to access the rooms as it may not be accessible to everyone, we had no issues ourselves but can imagine it being difficult for some others. The small kitchenette is great, but a few more utensils might go a long way.

Verified reviewBefore we even arrived, the owner was keen and thoughtful about our arriving plan. Later, the moment we arrived(at the wrong parking spot), he was mindful and came out to direct us to his hotel. In addition to his hostility, the condition of the room is also A++ grade, clean and comfy. The owner even treated us some soft & hard drinks our choices.
Thank you for staying with us. It's hot, so please be careful and enjoy sightseeing.

Verified reviewMy family and I liked how spacious, convenient and warm welcoming our host was! The location was few minutes walking distance to local restaurants and family mart. It was also approximately 8 minutes from Kumano Hayatama Taisha and in front of the bus stop heading towards to Nachi. Our host, Sasaki-san, was also kind to give us an introduction to the place along with offering free icecream, beer and sake! Overall we recommend this place!
Nothing I can think of.

Verified reviewEverything! The owner is so kind and lovely. He made sure to explain every detail about the accommodation and even gave free soft drinks plus sake to us. In the end, we even decided to stay one more night than we were planning in the beginning. When we were saying goodbye, he brought a really nice final gift: a Kumano Kodo bag. Thank you for everything! This stay will remain in our hearts.
Nothing, everything was amazing!

On a main road, the street noise was noisy, but we ran the fan on the AC on high and it was fine.

Verified reviewThe room was perfectly comfortable and the property well located. It was an added bonus to enjoy the experience of a Buddhist chanting ceremony in the morning with the monk who manages this property - he is a very charismatic person who made us feel very welcome and was happy to explain aspects of Buddhism. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are in the area.

Verified reviewIt was very clean, nice and peaceful. It functioned more like a guest house - the host will have to check you in and will guide you to the functions in the room. He was extremely generous and gave us a free ride to the train station on our check out day. Although the town this spot is in is pretty quiet, it was close to a bus station that we used to get places and it’s only about a 5-8 min walk to a major Kumano Kodo area. Sleeping wise, I found the tatami mats and pillow very comfortable and didn’t have a problem with traffic noise outside (though when it rains it’s louder than usual). It was the first night in Japan I was able to get a good sleep. We found a health grocery only 7 mins walk away that sold vegan options.

Verified reviewThe host was very kind and welcoming, and the room itself was clean and comfortable. The location is great — right in the center of Shingu, which made it easy to explore the area. Especially convenient given the inside parking spot.
The room faces a busy road, so there was some traffic noise, especially during the day. Also, while the room was tidy, the surrounding facilities outside felt a bit cluttered, giving off more of a casual, motel-like vibe. That said, the warm hospitality really made up for it and we still had a pleasant stay.
Thank you for staying with us. We will take your valuable opinions seriously and make improvements. Thank you very much.

Verified reviewThe monk who runs the property was so helpful recommending local restaurants and giving advice and even gave us a lift to the station. There were free drinks including alcohol. The rooms are part of a temple. The hotel is very close to the main shrine and not far from the station so a great location. The place to stay in Shingu. Good value for money.

Verified reviewA short walk from both the train station and Kumano Hayatama Taisha (my reason for visiting Shingu). Immaculately presented room, exceptionally clean and modern (on the interior). The staff were extremely friendly and personable. Additionally, there is a ramen shop almost opposite, which was very convenient for dinner.
There is nothing I didn’t like about the property.
