Handy location to explore Takayama. We rented one of the rooms as a private family room and it worked great for a family.

The location and staff were very nice. The guesthouse itself is neat, clean and well equipped !

The room lacks a few things such as a place to put luggage / bags, as well as sound insulation against a big machinery noise that kept us up at night... Not cool :( Also, the automatic light in the room entrance is definitely not useful and I would suggest removing it as it wakes other people up if you walk out during the night...

Very welcoming friendly hosts and a beautiful tatami room with lots of bedding option in cupboard. Great AC and cross flow window ventilation to help with the 34 degree summer heat. We arrived 2hours before check to use pre stay luggage storage and they allowed us to check in then which was really nice.

It seems like it would be good value if you booked a dorm bed. However we booked a family room.

The room was very dark and neglected. It felt enclosed. It was called a ‘family room’, but I would be shocked if you could fit a family in there. It didn’t really match the description and the photos had been taken to make it appear larger (e.g. with wide lens). Worst of all it was very dusty and immediately triggered my asthma. We had to leave early. It said we’d have a terrace, but the terrace was shared with the whole property.

The capsule bed was very comfortable and it was very close to Hida Takayama.

It was very small compared to the guests . My room had 8 bunks and no space at all. Only 2 bathrooms and 2 showers , all mixed gender . I went in the shower only to realize there was no shampoo, the bottle was empty. Only one towel.

We had a fantastic and comfortable stay at Cup of Tea Guesthouse. The property offers a mix of private rooms and dorms, with the dorms featuring a thoughtful capsule-style design—no more than six bunks per room. Each capsule provides plenty of privacy and more space than you'd expect, with enough room for clothes and personal items. The capsule setup is excellent: lockbox, power outlets, personal light, shelves, and hooks all make it easy to settle in. The bedding is soft and breathable, and the in-room AC helps regulate the temperature well—though we did notice it would turn off automatically during the night. Bathrooms, sinks, and showers were consistently clean and rarely occupied, which made everything feel smooth and stress-free. The common areas are lovely and inviting, with a calm, zen-like atmosphere. While outdoor seating is limited (which would be nice given the peaceful setting), the indoor spaces make up for it. The small kitchen has the basics you need, and the large dining table near the entrance adds a great community vibe. The staff were kind and helpful throughout our stay. The guesthouse is perfectly located—right across from an great onsen and within easy walking distance of all the main sights in Takayama. We explored everything on foot over our 4-day stay and loved it.

People should learn to close doors when they leave the room before 8-9-10am

Cup of Tea is one of the best hostels I stayed at, it was spotless, close to the center of Takayama. The pod-style beds are so comfy - had the best sleep there. They also have a coworking space that is free to use next door which we really appreciated. Highly recommend this place.

Some of the best dorms that I have seen in hostels, very spacious sleeping area. The toilet/showers were clean and the people travelling/living there were all friendly and a great chat! Loved staying there would definitely come back to cup of tea if ever in takayama again. No parking but there is a parking lot 5 minutes walk away that is only 700 yen per day so not too bad.

Lovely little hostel in close proximity to the old parts of town, but shielded away from the big crowds. The staff were awesome and very laid back. The beds were some of the comfiest hostel beds I've ever stayed in with spacious pods. Theres also a nice, tattoo-friendly sento across the road which is a good experience after a long day of walking.

I don't know if it was the golden week holiday, but there was an entire 24 hour period where the hostel wasn't cleaned at all during our stay. Many guests were sick with colds, and so it meant by the second morning of our stay there were bins overflowing with used (infectious) tissues and the sink areas were extremely dirty.
