Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.

By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

The hosts were amazing. A very sweet couple that went above and beyond!!!! We accidentally left my husband’s insulin in the refrigerator they called us and shipped it to us in Tokyo the next morning. The food was delicious and plentiful. They were fun to talk to and we enjoyed our time there very much. It was very quiet and we enjoyed reading our books together in the garden.

FranceEverything was fantastic !
Our stay at Daitokuji Sushicho was one of the best experience we’ve had as a traveling family. First time in Japan and we land in this small family owned traditional ryokan out of the beaten path, in a lovely residential neighborhood. Our hosts were the nicest people you can find, immediately offering to take us to visit the area, cooking amazing diners and breakfasts for our little family, and accommodating when our kids got sick. The 120-year old home was perfect for us 6, adjacent to the family restaurant with a private dining area for us. Very nice short walk to the Daitikoji temple and the city bus stops, we were able to visit the city by bus and subway and stroll around the neighborhood. Staying at this ryokan made us enjoy Kyoto even more as we were not confined to the touristic areas and even though it was only 4 days we got to see a lot by traveling to/from this neighborhood.

United KingdomWe stayed for four nights. The accommodation is lovely - a traditional Ryokan. The hosts are amazing, very friendly and helpful. They drove us to the centre of Kyoto and dropped us off at the station every morning. They didn't have to do that but it was much appreciated. They also took us to the Bamboo Forest before breakfast one day, which was lovely and tranquil and a change from the city. Both hosts could not have done more for us. The food was amazing - breakfast options were brilliant and we ate a couple of times in their restaurant which was a real treat. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a change from hotel accommodation.

I had the perfect family stay at this charming hotel. My family and I were greeted warmly by a delightful Japanese couple who welcomed us into their beautifully preserved, hundred-year-old home. Their genuine hospitality made us feel right at home, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience that we will cherish for years to come. The culinary experience was outstanding. Every meal was a celebration of traditional Japanese cuisine—thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and crafted to delight both adults and children alike. It was clear that each detail was carefully considered to ensure an exceptional dining experience for the entire family. This hotel is truly a hidden gem for those seeking a blend of cultural immersion and family-friendly comfort. From the historic ambiance to the impeccable service and cozy accommodations, every aspect of our stay was curated to provide a warm, welcoming atmosphere for families of all sizes. I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel for any family looking for an enriching and memorable vacation. Our stay was nothing short of exceptional—100% recommended!

The hosts were very welcoming and the premises were very clean. It was a very unique experience that many are not able to experience nowadays. The hosts provided dinner and breakfast at their restaurant next door which had a very comforting feeling and the presentation of the food was spectacular. The meal provided had a large display of food and many courses and while you ate and talked to the hosts, you really got to experience and understand their lives in Kyoto.

United StatesWe liked everything.
Very warm hosts who provided us with comfortable lodging and everything we needed for our stay, and exceptional meals (dinner and breakfast) in a very private setting. Chef Satoshi san was a chef in Tokyo and his skills and hospitality are outstanding. My husband says it was one of the most, if not the most impressive and delicious meal he has ever had. The bath was also a treat. The nice couple helped us with a taxi and a warm send-off after a decadent and delicious breakfast. Unforgettable stay.

United StatesIt was the costliest stay of our trip, which included Hyatt, Hilton, and another ryokan in Tokyo. But I think you get the best real Kyoto living experience, as the couple modeled the rooms most likely after how they live themselves. Their restaurant is next to the rooms, as well as their own living quarters. It was also the most spacious; we had a total of 4 rooms to ourselves, not including the bathroom and kitchenette.
This ryokan was incredible, run by a retired couple. The husband was a chef in Tokyo for 33 years, and every morning made us the most amazing, gourmet breakfasts at the time requested. He even offered to drive us to Arashiyama Bamboo Forest early in the morning, walk us around, and drive us back for breakfast, but we'd already visited. The "room" you stay in is the only one available, and they offered us an upstairs bedroom that has three beds (and also has its own water closet and extra living room space), a kitchenette with a fridge and microwave, two rooms on the ground floor, and a bathroom with separate water closet and bathtub rooms. It was the most spacious stay we had in Japan, almost like having our own apartment. They also had a washer and dryer unit that was all-in-one (and also private use to us), so by the time we woke up, we had clean, dry clothes, which was very appreciated in the middle of our trip. There were plenty of heaters everywhere that we could adjust, so we never felt cold. The location is about 20 minutes to the nearest train station, so keep that in mind. The wife gave us a ride once, and they also gave us a ride to the Kyoto train station when we were heading to Tokyo, saving us cab fare, which was so nice of them.

United StatesI think my only concern I'd recommend changing was the signage making sure we got to the right place. Luckily from the Maps/Translate app we were able to better confirm it before leaving our luggage there. There were other people that were ending their dinner when we came to sit for food, so it kinda felt like we were intruding despite being our time slot. Other than that though just some minor signs of age compared to a more modernized hotel, but I imagine that's not what people are staying at a Ryokan for. I think this would have been a lot more pleasurable is we had made the trip in slightly warmer weather.
Food was superb and the chef was aware of his skill; the dinner and breakfast left us amazed. The owner was willing to also help us in the morning get to the station so we could get on our way. The location is a bit away from a lot of the main draws to Kyoto, so it is a very quiet neighborhood with a little bit of walking to get there, but nothing outside of what one's likely doing for a Japan trip. The room had some antiquated nuances with light-switches and the like, but the owner was more than willing take show us them before leaving us to enjoy the stay. Bath was very relaxing as was being able to idle in the garden afterword to cool off. A welcome end to our Kyoto leg of the trip to just take a load off and enjoy the ambiance. The amenities and provided features left us not wanting for more and I'm actually kicking myself for having had done laundry the day before we got here.

Great hosts. The owners are very kind and friendly - its fantastic to chat with the chef while he is preparing the dinner. He gave us a ride for an early morning tour and even managed to find us one of the clay cooking pots. The place is a bit out of central kyoto but perfect for avoiding crowds- and for a bit more of an authentic experience

United StatesThe location was a little bit off the beaten path, but they offered a ride to the train station (or any tourist site I wanted to see!) at the end of the stay! The less-touristy location did make it more peaceful and made for a great sento experience too!
Over-accommodating hosts eager to make your stay perfect (including getting me equipped to go to my first sento!). Serene Japanese style room overlooking a private garden (slept like a dream!). World class kaiseki dinner and delicious breakfast (including accommodating my gluten allergy!). Highlight of my time in Kyoto!

AustraliaWe absolutely enjoyed our stay. Satoshi san and Hisako san were wonderful hosts. Satoshi is a top chef who used to have his own restaurant in Tokyo and now his own restaurant at the Ryokan. He introduced us to a few delicious traditional Japanese dishes we had never tried before and you would only get at a top rated restaurant. The Kinkakuji Temple is 30 minute walking distance from the ryokan so the location was perfect and peaceful. There were other old temples located a few minutes from the Ryokan too. Satoshi took us for a early morning tour of the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest and surrounds before the crowds arrived. He also transferred us to our next hotel in Kyoto and then to Sanzenin Temple north of Kyoto where it wasn't so busy as less well know. We loved it there. Benefits of travels before the autumn leaves change and high season again.

United Statesanother person in their review said this was the best part of their entire trip and I agree and will be coming back here next time I’m in Kyoto. The home is a traditional Ryokan, but the food is the truly unforgettable experience. The host is a professional tokyo trained chef who now in his golden years, rents out this two room bed and breakfast, cooking private meals for you for both breakfast and dinner. These were some of the most memorable meals I’ve ever had. In the morning, he drove us to the bamboo forest before all the tourists arrived and gave us a private walking tour of the area. Highly recommend and will be returning!

If you are looking for a traditional ryokan, this is the place for you. Everything from the room to the small backyard garden was perfect. Everything was clean and tidy. This one day ryokan certainly provided a much needed rest for a hectic trip and it was good to take a break from the city. Not to mention the hospitality provided by Sasaki-san and his wife which was splendid. Sasaki-san took a lot of effort and time to prepare our meals starting very early in the morning to ensure that we were filled up before we left. Both meals provided by Sasaki-san was nothing short of perfect. The meals were prepared fresh each day and very good. We highly recommend this place because of the peacefulness, experience and food. This is a good place to just rest and unwind before moving on to the next city. If you are driving, Sasaki-san will also reserved a parking space for you if you provide him an advance notice. When we come back to Kyoto once more, we will definitely take a day or two and spend it here.
