My son doesn't like traditional Japanese so some other option like curry rice or soba/ udon would be great.

Very friendly young lady with good English served us both meals and showed us our rooms. Location was quiet and house was an old traditional one and so very interesting to stay in as a foreigner. Meals were also very traditional.

Although for me it was not a problem since I was only with a very small backpack, the access to the room and its size might be something to consider if you travel with suitcases.

The staff is very kind and nice! I was very positively surprised with the easy communication we had via message and in person. I ended up by getting the dinner and breakfast (there is not much around) and the food was great and explained to me in detail. I was able to comfortably rest and recover form the bike tour.

The place is history, but clean and many details added to it. Love how it is very homey. And the food!! Dinner and breakfast were superb, the owner, a former chef made us feel like we were in a restaurant! Thank you for hosting us, it was a great stay after our long bike in shimanami kaido

We loved to meet the owners, the house is in a remote village (not far from the shimanami road), very quiet and peaceful. The house is really old, but it is confortable. It is an opportunity to test the Japanese breakfast and sleep on tatamis. Great experience

Breakfast was fantastic and traditional. The location is off the beaten path, and is well worth it. The staff are super friendly and gave me plenty of recommendations along the shimanami kaido. This is a great place to stay if you are looking for a more traditional and authentic stay.

Very cozy, quiet, relaxing, Japanese-style place. Very good dinner and breakfast. Dinner highly recommended not only because it is very good, but also because probably there is no restaurant in the village.

Gramma's Place was a unique and extraordinary experience, like visiting a beloved relative rather than staying at a hotel. The whole family was incredibly warm and attentive, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. The rooms were spacious and beautifully kept in traditional Japanese style, offering a peaceful retreat after a long day of cycling. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, and we had a wonderful night's sleep. We also opted for dinner, and we’re so glad we did. Every dish was exquisite and beautifully presented, you could really feel the love and care that went into preparing the meal. Breakfast was just as good. I wholeheartedly recommend staying here to anyone cycling the Shimanami Kaido. It’s not just a place to rest, it’s a highlight of the journey.

Nothing that I wasn't expecting when I booked the place - I wasn't used to Japanese-style floor futons or shared washroom facilities, which are not really my preference, but given that they were still reasonably comfortable. The walls were thin so a group that came in late were bit of a disturbance. The stairs are quite steep.

Absolutely adorable place with very friendly staff. The food was amazing and the rooms were very cute. They provided a nice robe to wear around the inn. It was short bike ride off the main route of the Shimanami Kaido - perfect halfway stopping point.

The location was not ideal for me. It's a bit away from the blue line cycling road, although this does mean it's in a very quiet corner of the island. My biggest issue was ( I think) the warm water heater. Whatever the source exactly, there was some kind of inconsistent buzzing noise keeping me awake in the very early morning. I'd also have preferred blackout curtains.

Was in such a quiet place, and the staff was so nice! I arrived before the check-in time listed on Booking, but was allowed to check in immediately. I did not, because they also offered me a spot chilling with them in the sunny garden, which was especially amazing after two tough days of cycling. I felt so welcome! The room was big enough, and bathroom had all necessary facilities. The included breakfast was amazing. While the private message in the chat a few days in advance suggested to me they couldn't provide dinner, Google maps reviews told me they once did. I asked, and dinner was still possible when requested a day in advance. The dinner was one of, if not the best meal I've had in Japan so far. While some futons in Japan are soft/thin enough you're sleeping on the floor, the ones here are amazing! So comfy! The staff spoke great English, and it was possible to do an additional payment here by card, something even the larger hotels I've had in Japan often can't do... In fact, this hotel has been the best one I stayed at so far! Out of about 20... Definitely recommend this place!

The food they served here was the best I've had since arriving in Japan 10 days ago. The staff are fabulous and speak English well, making conversation easy. The facilities are good. It's someone's home and they make you feel very welcome. Couldn't fault it and would recommend staying here.

Honestly nothing we would change, perfect Japanese stay!

We had the most amazing stay at Grandma's house. We opted for the full board having dinner and a traditional Japanese breakfast. The food was so fresh and delicious! This stay is an absolute must if you are cycling the Shimanami Kaido. It is over half way along the route so it's a great place to stop over to rest if you want to do the full route in 1.5/2 days. This was our first time sleeping on the tatami mats and we were pleasantly surprised with the comfort and warmth! The staff were so kind, we were very sad to be leaving!

The stairs to the room are really steep, so be careful.

The grandma who came to greet me was very sweet, explaining the logistics clearly. The futon in my room was extremely comfortable, and my dinner and breakfast set meals there were incredible. The evening staff Yuuki came and had a chat with me and a fellow guest and I was glad to be able to practise my subpar Japanese 😄 I also had a very fragrant cup of hand drip coffee made by the morning staff Miwa, whom I later learnt works at Overview coffee in Ikuchijima!

Our stay here was wonderful! It’s a bit off the beaten path, but a peaceful and enjoyable place. Perfect for our break biking between Onomichi and Imabari. The staff were incredible and the food was delicious! It is a ryokan, so shared bathrooms and dining area. Highly recommend!

Staying at Grandma's Island Home - Hakata was a very special experience, highly recommended. Our family was traveling by bicycle along the Shimanami Kaido bike trail, and we stopped here as a halfway point between Onomichi and Imabari; on entering the historic wooden house, we felt transported back to an earlier time in Japan. Both the rooms we reserved were extremely spacious and clean. Our dinner and breakfast in the common room (cooked by "Grandma" Matsuzaki) were amazing, consisting of delicious local seafood, vegetables, rice and beef - and also a feast for the eyes. Lastly, we really enjoyed meeting Yuki, the manager (and granddaughter), she really made us feel at home on the island. We would love to come again!
