How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewOne of my favourite guesthouses ever! Very comfortable bed and nice room with plenty of space for belongings and to hang laundry (coin laundry downstairs). The staff were very lovely and helpful and the location right near the lake, ferry and fireworks was perfect. I was also able to extend my booking easily.

Verified reviewExtremely friendly and helpful host who gave me lots of great information about the area upon checkin. There's a cute cosy shared space on the first floor. The rooms are small so you aren't sharing with millions of other people.
No view of the lake which is a slight bummer. The place is also clearly a private operation rather than a big corporate chain, which is charming but does mean fewer modern amenities like the big capsule hotels.

Verified reviewI stayed there for a night with the purpose to watch firework and enjoy onsen at a nice hotel without breaking the bill, Ponkotan did meet and even exceed many of my expectations for a dormitory accommodation. The location was great, short walk to bus terminal, to the water promenade to appreciate firework, and to many good onsens that you can enjoy day visit at a very good price, near to convenient store as well. The staff was friendly and helpful to answer any questions. Bed and pillow were surprisingly comfortable, and the small fan they provided for each pod helped a lot to keep your sleep cool and at peace in the hot summer night. Plenty of spaces to store things and hanging clothes. Wi-Fi was great, even better than some 4 stars hotel I stayed in this trip. Basically they provided everything beyond what you will expect at this price. And lastly, the small restroom inside each room is a plus and I really really like the smell of fragrance they used, made the entire place very comfortable.
Like what other comments mentioned, the bed is basically made from wood. It’s quite sensitive to movement. No matter the person in upper or lower bed, or even on the opposite bed, moves, it will create noise. I was so tired with late sleep several nights before and all others stayed in the same room was quite considerate of each other, so it was not much problem for me. But please be aware if you’re light sleeper.

Verified reviewGreat place - super clean and friendly. Rooms have a nice set up - 4 beds to a dorm, plenty of storage space (lockable as well) and air con. 2 shower rooms at top, they were always clean and available during my 3-night stay. Close vicinity to the lake - quick walk to see the daily free fireworks or cycle/ferry to Nakajima island. Staff are friendly and had some great recommendations on places to eat, where to rent a bicycle etc and a good chat in the shared common area.

Verified reviewEverything, the staff was so kind, very to happy to converse even in basic japanese, recommended me a fireworks show being held at the night of my stay, so worth it.
my only (ONLY) gripe was that in my room of beds the aircon unit wasn't working, but I assume it will be fixed in due time. Luckily it wasn't that hot so it was fine.

Verified reviewI had a wonderful stay here! The owner is incredibly sweet, cute, friendly, and super helpful—she even speaks fluent English, which made communication so easy. She went above and beyond by picking us up from Toya Station when there were no taxis or buses available in the area. The room was very spacious, spotlessly clean, and a fantastic value for money. The whole place is well maintained and peaceful, perfect for solo travelers or couples looking for a quiet, comfortable stay. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Verified reviewThe matress was really comfortable! And unlike most hostels like this, the bottom bunk is higher so you can sit on the bed without crouching close to the floor. The ceiling between bottom and top bunk is also higher than most places so I did not hit my head not even once, which I usually do. Heating was good. I like the perfume in the bathroom and hallway. Also each bed has a huge drawer that fits a cabin luggage open, so it was easy to reach my things.
I could not use communal space before check-in
