How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewlove the place, with all the details of Japanese decorations and Japanese style. I felt like time went back to old ages in a Japanese "castle." You can sense the love and effort that the owner has put into this hostel. Recommend Nakashimaya to all females travel to Kumamoto.
I didn't notice my debit card was left in the room after check out, the owner messaged me at once when she noticed it and even drove to train station to send to me so I was able to receive the card for later use and catch up the train on time.

Verified reviewCozy little place with welcoming music at the entrance hall. Everything you need for a peaceful stay. Very clean. Futon beds were very comfortable. Excellent location
I couldn't open a window. Therefore the room was rather dark. A note for which the host is not to blame for. The last room, I had an extremely loud neighbour who made a lot of noise .

Verified reviewThe place is beautifully decorated and the owner was really kind. It was a good place to stay for a night, not very social between the people staying. The room was small but there was a lot of space in the common area to relax.

Verified reviewLovely hostel. Warm welcome. Beautiful property. Good facilities. As an introvert who uses hostels purely for cost reasons, I found this a good one! About a 20 minute walk from the station.

Verified reviewThis hostel is for women only and is super well located, a few cafes and kissaten around and only a 10-15mn walk to the main touristic places (Kumamoto castle etc.). It was super clean, 2 shower rooms and 2 toilets, the futons were thick and super comfortable, and the lady running it was so nice. She also speaks English. Towels can be bought there for ¥200-500 depending on the size as well as toothbrushes. Also provides shampoo and body wash. The room was well heated and we had a great sleep. 100% recommend. We didn’t use it but there’s also a kitchen and a coffee corner.

Verified reviewA very quiet and charming hotel, the rooms were very comfortable and warm. All the facilities are super clean and the owner was very welcoming and helpful about things to do and see in Kumamoto despite my inability to speak Japanese ! I definitely recommend, especially if you're a solo female traveler.

Verified reviewThis is hands down the best hostel I've ever stayed in. Genuinely, I would pick this hostel over a 5-star hotel any day. The room is large, comfy and well-equipped with a small table, tissues, travel guides etc. I LOVED the Kumamon dotted around the hotel, especially the Kumamon key chain and the Kumamon that will sit in the receptionist seat. Everything is so clean and tidy! The decorations of the hostel blew my mind, I genuinely had never seen such exquisite interior designs. The hostel even had a huge powder room, perfect for us ladies, and a huge common area with so much manga, a massage chair, games and even PCs! I would return to Kumamoto just to stay at this hostel again.

Verified reviewI enjoyed yhe enormous amount of detail that went into every knook and crannie. Everywhere you looked. There was something new to see even if you have been in the room multiple times. it was a magical wonderland and a place you won't want to leave even the roof top is nicely done when I have a home.I hope it looks like this someday. And the staff is just as magical and kind as a new fairy tale.
The only thing I didn't like is that I couldn't stay longer

Verified reviewThe owner was very friendly and helpful. She gave a tour of the property and told me about events in the areas which I appreciated. It was very nice, cozy, and well decorated. I especially like the common room which had manga and movies. It also seemed like there were shared PC that could be used. There was also a cool rooftop area, but I didn't use it for too long since it was cold. I booked a shared room with a futon and it was spacious. It was fairly close to Kumamoto Castle and only 2mins walk away from one of the tram stations as well.
Upstairs sink didn't have hand soap so you would have to either go downstairs to wash your hands or use the downstairs toilet.

Verified reviewThis place is literally like a museum with beautiful, maybe even rare collections of the owner Miki-san. The dorm room is spacious. The entire space is very clean and well-maintained, beautifully decorated with lighting and trinkets. For me, the major plus is a wall full of manga and past issues of Shonen JUMP ... I can spend months here!!!
That I had to leave. Also, please also look elsewhere to book this accommodation bc Booking is more expensive but they deny that. So much for price matching??

Verified reviewThe host was really nice. It was very beautiful inside, and you can see Kumamoto Castle from the rooftop. It has a kitchen, laundry room, shower room, powder room, and you can buy towels or toothbrushes if you need them. I recommend you if you want to stay somewhere special in Kumamoto. You have to take the subway or bus from Kumamoto Station, but it's in between major tourist attractions and Kumamoto Station, so it's good for traveling. If you have luggage, I recommend a backpack rather than a carrier.

Verified reviewIt's a good hostel for solo female travellers. It's clean and comfortable and I felt super safe for a 2 days stay. You share a room with 3 other persons but there is also a nice living room, kitchen and rooftop. The location is close to tourist attractions and Kumamoto station. The cleanliness of the whole hostel was a real plus! Note that there is no free shower gel or towels provided - either bring your own or pay a small fee to receive some!
