How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe stay in Etajinasou Hotel & SPA was the highlight of our two-weeks trip to Japan. We intended to rest a bit between visiting bigger cities and this was the perfect place to unwind and relax. The staff is very friendly and helpful without being intrusive and they make sure you take advantage of all the comforts of this beautiful & calm site. We really appreciated the great attention to detail and the aesthetics of the place. The food served at the hotel restaurant was also delicious. We would definitely come back if it wasn’t so far away.

Verified reviewBeautiful location and stunning views from the huge window in the room.
There’s not much else outside the hotel so nothing really to explore, but that’s not the hotels fault. The food is extremely well cooked and service is fantastic, it is very local, so lots of fish. Just be aware if you have teenage children with you or not get adventurous eaters. There is private onsen available for those not comfortable with Japanese etiquette for a public onsen.

Verified reviewClean room. Friendly staff.
The private bath and showers were closed. If your room doesn’t have a shower or bath, you had to go to the public onsen which is downstairs on the other side of the hotel. Very inconvenient.

Verified reviewI lived on Etajima (Island) in the 1990s. Recently, they are promoting themselves as a travel destination. Etajima-sou is a new property (4 years old), and on October 24, 2024, was awarded as the World's Best Small Luxury Hotel. It is like being in a fine residence, with a lobby like a well appointed living room, and a public bath like a luxurious bath. There is a sitting room and cafe with tasteful music on vinyl. The hotel issues uniforms for guests to wear on the campus. At check-in, the staff "suggested" the lounge wear (similar to Japanese "jinbei" traditional work clothes) provided in the room could be worn throughout the property. I soon found that EVERYONE changed into the hotel wear and wore them at all times. I also put on the uniform. It was comfortable and warm in the early autumn weather. The French restaurant suggests reservations six weeks in advance. Rates are quite reasonable considering Etajima-sou's status. I would visit again just for the experience.
Regretfully, I discovered the fine reputation of their French restaurant too late, and found they suggest reservations six weeks in advance. I was able to enjoy the fine Japanese breakfast. I lived on Etajima (Island) for three years in the 1990s. Etajima was best known for its farmed oysters (source of 98% of Japan's oysters) and fishing industries. The surrounding sea and beaches are not really suitable for swimming, if you are used to tropical destinations (I am from Hawaii).

Verified reviewFrom the shuttle at the ferry dock, reception, orientation to the Spa, cleanliness of the room and facilities, and welcoming attitudes of the staff to the actual experience of dining, lounging, walking around the facilities and use of the Onsen, we were delighted with the property. The relaxed atmosphere helped after riding the Shimanami Kaido International Cycling event.
The only issue we had was not with the property but some other people who walked behind our son making derogatory comments without knowing he is a translator/interpreter and clearly understood everything they were saying. We are African-American and he has worked and lived in Japan for 11 years. He was very upset and spoke to hotel staff about the issue encouraging them to ask guests to respect others while in residence. The property was awesome!

Verified reviewOur stay exceeded our expectations, which were already high based on photos and reviews of the hotel. The staff gave us a wonderful welcome and provided all useful information we could need (in English) and were so helpful in arranging transfers to and from the ferry port. The facility is gorgeous and it is clear that a lot of thought went into the details, from the amenities to the decor and also in the guest experience. The onsens were also beautifully done and very relaxing. The food was excellent and most of it locally sourced. The Japanese breakfast was exceptional and we also had a great dinner at the hotel restaurant one night. Lastly, the staff were so friendly, helpful and accommodating. We had a very lovely stay and would stay again!
If you want to visit Hiroshima City, it is a bit of a journey out to the hotel, but for us it was totally worth it to stay at this beautiful place. :-)

Breakfest was Japanese only . Rice dryed fish soup some seaweed and tea. It was not eatable for us. We skiped it the second day. I asked for Coffee but got a rather blunt answer that they don't server it. There was nobody who spoke any Englisch . The airco blew air straight into your face which was not very nice

Verified reviewBeautiful spa hotel on beach with spacious comfortable rooms. Attention to detail is incredible, and everything well designed for a luxurious comfortable break. Private onsens were fantastic and the beach was clean and quiet. It was a lovely place to relax after having being in busy cities. Food in restaurant was fabulous and the gourmet Japanese breakfast amazing. Drinks and snacks provided in the lounge area including hot snack at 10pm which was a lovely touch and very tasty.

Verified review10 out of 10. It's such a pretty location. After a lot of hectic cities, we came to a full relaxation after the complimentary footbaths, private onsen, 5 course dinner specially adjusted for my pregnant wife. Looking out to sea from the room, a tiny tori gate in the distance. It was like heaven.
Nothing.
