Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesWe couldn’t figure out how to turn off the light in the bedroom so it was hard to fall asleep. This is likely our fault not the property’s.
This is the most unique property I’ve ever encountered. So cool to be surrounded by historic art! Every design element complemented the original space. And the bath overlooking a semi-outdoor patio was awesome! The movie theater was amazing also.

AustraliaEverything was perfect!
Everything at The Garon was amazing. It was so unique… definitely like you were staying in a museum, but it also had a very warm & homely feel. I had booked a similar style house for our stay in Takayama, and only a few weeks before our travels I discovered the Garon and its availability. I will admit I didn’t know which property to choose, but in the end decided to go with the uniqueness of the Garon… and I am so pleased I did! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the location is so perfect for exploring the old town of Takayama. The house was so clean and comfortable for our family of 2 adults & 2 teens. The owner met us at the property and walked us through explaining how everything works, which was lovely. We loved watching an evening movie on the projector.. and soaking in the awesome bath! I would highly recommend The Garon for your stay in Takayama. I know I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

United StatesThis property is my favorite place I’ve ever stayed at. I want to go back to Japan immediately to stay here again! The art is incredible. I spent so much time just walking around admiring it. The beds are comfortable. The theater room is quite literally A THEATER. And of course the bathroom was a work of art. I loved bathing in a tub that looks out to a little courtyard. If you’ve read this far into the review, JUST BOOK IT. This property is the best place ever.

United StatesThis wasn’t a negative for us, but the parking is off-site, not a big walk, but take your bags to the house first and unload, then go park.
What an amazing and unique place to stay! It was formerly an art museum, and you can’t beat the location in the heart of the historic district. Our host met us at the property and insured we had everything we needed and more! I’d love to stay there again some day!

Staying in this gem of a place was the highlight of our japan trip..being surrounded by t art decor was surreal..every corner of this MUSEUM--HOME kept us in admiration..Also it was spotlessly CLEAN and ,this home had everything that you needed..a fully equipped kitchen,a home theatre and even an open to sky extra bath..the 2 bedrooms are very tastefully decorated in Japanese style.. Inspite of the language barrier,THE OWNER went over and beyond to communicate and help us with all our queries...he was a very kind, pleasant and caring man....at the time of our checkout,we asked him to order for 2 taxis to drop us off to the train station..to our surprise,he dropped us off in his personal car and refused to charge us for it...this act really touched us. The LOCATION is superb,it's on t street parallel to historic street..Sanmachi street..There are a lot of restaurants close by too. I rate this home a 10/10..and will highly recommend it for your stay in TAKAYAMA

United StatesThe only thing is the kitchen is in the entrance area which was unheated and quite cold during our stay. It was hard to leave the warm cozy main part of the house to step out there to make a cup of tea. But this is a small thing (and wouldn’t be a problem at all during a warmer time of year)
This was one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. The house is like a museum, decorated with lots of art and artifacts. It’s very large, with plenty of space for our family (all adults). Beds were comfortable - main bedroom is stunningly beautiful. Best location in the heart of the historic district but very quiet at night. House is very clean with good amenities. Host was kind and took the time to show us everything about the house when we arrived. We wished we could have stayed longer!

NorwayEverything about this stay was amazing! The building was previously a museum, so you’ll be experiencing the local culture right in your home. We literally stayed in the old city—just one street away—yet it was a quiet and authentic area. There were nice cafes, restaurants, and a grocery store just around the corner. The house was warm in the winter and tidy. Highly recommend!

AustraliaSuch a unique property, which used to be an art gallery in its previous life. Artwork is still dotted around the property. For this reason, it’s probably not suitable for families with young curious children who like to explore as there are a few precious items around. Great location, close to everything. We were greeted by a lovely host who explained the ins and outs of the property (there were many!) but spoke no English - Google translate was our friend and we managed fine. Definitely a one of a kind place and worth the experience.

IsraelEverything! The place is super unique and charming. On one hand you get to stay in very traditional Japanese house with amazing character and art work, on the other hand all facilities are new, clean and comfortable! The location is perfect, right in the middle of everything but still quite and easy to access. The host was very lovely, friendly and helpful. It was very easy and pleasant to communicate.

CanadaSuch a unique and amazing experience staying at this hotel. My friends and I really enjoyed staying here. It was in a great location within the city where you can visit the many markets and shops in town. The house was very spacious with two floors and lots of unique art pieces that were in the previous museum. Definitely one of the best hotels I’ve stated in my life. We really love the added plus of having a projector at the hotel, it was great to play videos and music after coming home to the hotel at the end of a busy and cold day in the snow. 10 out of 10 would recommend to anyone traveling to Takayama.

SingaporeNeed to be extra careful when staying here as we are traveling with kids. Not a big issue as my kids are quite disciplined. Parking is available however it was 400m away. I just treat it as exercise.
Very artistic feel and first time experiencing living in a museum. It really gave a WOW feeling when we post the pictures in our social media. Very near to the morning markets and old street. The host gave us a very detailed explanation on the property history and the do and don’t.
