This is the most unique property I’ve ever encountered. So cool to be surrounded by historic art! Every design element complemented the original space. And the bath overlooking a semi-outdoor patio was awesome! The movie theater was amazing also.

We couldn’t figure out how to turn off the light in the bedroom so it was hard to fall asleep. This is likely our fault not the property’s.

Everything at The Garon was amazing. It was so unique… definitely like you were staying in a museum, but it also had a very warm & homely feel. I had booked a similar style house for our stay in Takayama, and only a few weeks before our travels I discovered the Garon and its availability. I will admit I didn’t know which property to choose, but in the end decided to go with the uniqueness of the Garon… and I am so pleased I did! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, the location is so perfect for exploring the old town of Takayama. The house was so clean and comfortable for our family of 2 adults & 2 teens. The owner met us at the property and walked us through explaining how everything works, which was lovely. We loved watching an evening movie on the projector.. and soaking in the awesome bath! I would highly recommend The Garon for your stay in Takayama. I know I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

    Everything was perfect!

This property is my favorite place I’ve ever stayed at. I want to go back to Japan immediately to stay here again! The art is incredible. I spent so much time just walking around admiring it. The beds are comfortable. The theater room is quite literally A THEATER. And of course the bathroom was a work of art. I loved bathing in a tub that looks out to a little courtyard. If you’ve read this far into the review, JUST BOOK IT. This property is the best place ever.

What an amazing and unique place to stay! It was formerly an art museum, and you can’t beat the location in the heart of the historic district. Our host met us at the property and insured we had everything we needed and more! I’d love to stay there again some day!

This wasn’t a negative for us, but the parking is off-site, not a big walk, but take your bags to the house first and unload, then go park.

Staying in this gem of a place was the highlight of our japan trip..being surrounded by t art decor was surreal..every corner of this MUSEUM--HOME kept us in admiration..Also it was spotlessly CLEAN and ,this home had everything that you needed..a fully equipped kitchen,a home theatre and even an open to sky extra bath..the 2 bedrooms are very tastefully decorated in Japanese style.. Inspite of the language barrier,THE OWNER went over and beyond to communicate and help us with all our queries...he was a very kind, pleasant and caring man....at the time of our checkout,we asked him to order for 2 taxis to drop us off to the train station..to our surprise,he dropped us off in his personal car and refused to charge us for it...this act really touched us. The LOCATION is superb,it's on t street parallel to historic street..Sanmachi street..There are a lot of restaurants close by too. I rate this home a 10/10..and will highly recommend it for your stay in TAKAYAMA

Unique house with artworks and love the location. Everything is within walking distance. Friendly and responsive host.

Wish we can have 1 or 2 blankets downstairs and more comfortable seating to use when watching movies at night for family.

The location was great with parking spot available a short walk away 5 minutes). Our host made it easy to pull up and drop your bags first, then park car and return for a brief walk through of the home.

This was one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. The house is like a museum, decorated with lots of art and artifacts. It’s very large, with plenty of space for our family (all adults). Beds were comfortable - main bedroom is stunningly beautiful. Best location in the heart of the historic district but very quiet at night. House is very clean with good amenities. Host was kind and took the time to show us everything about the house when we arrived. We wished we could have stayed longer!

The only thing is the kitchen is in the entrance area which was unheated and quite cold during our stay. It was hard to leave the warm cozy main part of the house to step out there to make a cup of tea. But this is a small thing (and wouldn’t be a problem at all during a warmer time of year)

Everything about this stay was amazing! The building was previously a museum, so you’ll be experiencing the local culture right in your home. We literally stayed in the old city—just one street away—yet it was a quiet and authentic area. There were nice cafes, restaurants, and a grocery store just around the corner. The house was warm in the winter and tidy. Highly recommend!
