From the moment we arrived at Fujiya we felt very welcome. The staff were very kind and made our stay relaxing. We really appreciated their efforts in trying to explain things in english due to our japanese being rather limited - thank you very much for your help. A highlight for us was the building itself: Our japanese style room had a beautiful view of the river and bridge. The private family onsen sent us back in time and the dining room felt very traditional and special to us. All meals were delicious. I will never forget the feeling of being cozy in bed with the sound of the river running and the frogs giving their best concert :)

Nothing - we would come back in a heartbeat.

Good old traditional Japanese Ryokan. High quality and friendly service, excellent food, and great onsen bath. I have nothing to complain!

I personally do not have anything dislike about this ryokan. However, if anyone who expect modern facilities, this is probably not the place.

I had a good stay at Fujiya Ryokan in Kurokawa Onsen. The ryokan’s central location made it easy to explore other nearby onsens, adding to the experience. The food was a highlight, with delicious, high-quality dishes that felt truly authentic. The interior design throughout was beautiful, and the dining area, covered in tatami, was especially charming and immersive. The indoor onsen was well-maintained with a nostalgic “Showa” vibe. I loved the small outdoor small standing area overlooking the river, which led to the sauna—a serene spot to unwind.

While Fujiya Ryokan had its charms, a few areas fell short of expectations: Room Choice and Description: We opted for the Western-style room with two beds, which was notably larger but lacked any view—something that would have been helpful to know in advance as it could affect room selection. Rotenburo Arrangement: Fujiya doesn’t have its own on-site open-air bath (rotenburo). Instead, guests are directed to Noshiyu, a nearby ryokan about a five-minute walk away. While the rotenburo itself is atmospheric, it’s quite small and lacks shower facilities. Unfortunately, the staff did not inform us about the absence of showers beforehand, which would have been helpful to know. Service and Staff Engagement: While the staff member serving us was polite, I found them to be somewhat unmotivated and low on enthusiasm, especially compared to other ryokans. In fact, the non-Japanese staff attending other guests seemed to be more genuinely welcoming. Pre-Arrival Communication: Compared to other ryokans in the area, the pre-arrival communication felt less attentive, which can be crucial for arranging things like transportation or special requests ahead of time. Transportation Assistance: Upon check in, the ryokan couldn’t arrange a drop-off to the bus station for checkout the next day as we hadn't pre-arranged this. This is fine, but they also didn’t suggest arranging a taxi for us. This was something we eventually had to initiate on our own, whereas most ryokans would offer this alternative on their own accord. Overall, I felt that both the amenities and service level were slightly below those of similar ryokans in the area at this price point. While Fujiya’s design and location were appealing, more consistent guest support and attention to detail would elevate the experience and better justify the cost.

Amazing stay!!! First time staying in traditional ryokan and did not let down. The staff treated us like very honoured guests! We came before check in time but they let us leave our suitcases. When we came back they had already lifted them upstairs to our room! Got robes/kimono to wear. Our room had a nice view of the river. Welcome drinks provided. Had our own toilet in our room, while no shower as there is a shared onsen downstairs (separate gender ones and family onsen). Dinner was STUNNING! Many courses so I was super full!! The man who served us during dinner was so polite and explained what all the foods were. Although I didn’t expect much English all the staff did speak very well! Breakfast also was massive and delicious!

I personally feel very comfortable on a futon but my 3 friends did not sleep well on them! Keep this in mind if you might have trouble sleeping on one. Driving to the property is a little tricky, as the roads through the little town are quite narrow, but we managed once we found the right entrance point!

Breakfast was fabulous. We couldnt finish it all! Our room overlooks the stream. Really nice but too cold to sit out in the balcony since it was winter. My husband loves the little smoking room

    Nothing

It is an old building right on the river, in a great location for the village and onsens. There was free coffee in the lobby before or after breakfast. We had a corner room with a great view of the river.

The age of the building made the room very drafty and dark and the lobby was over cluttered. The hotel sent us up the hill in the dark to a different hotel for the open air bath as theirs was very small. The onsen itself was nice but not as clean as others. The staff was not very hospitable compared to many of the other ryokans we have stayed at in Kurokawa.

Everything. I don't know how they calculate ratings but this ryoken is easily 4 stars. Probably the cosiest & prettiest ryoken in town. The staff are exceeding nice & attentive. Great dinner & breakfast.

    Nothing.

The location is fantastic, just right next to the creek and window opens to the scenery. Hotel itself is quint and full of the nostalgic ryokan feel. Hot springs is great and probably the best we had during our trip.

The 4 person room with split level is a bit tight. The split level has a very low head room and poor ventilation.

Everything! I’ve stayed in very expensive ryokans and machias and this lute little places beats them all. The staff was very nice, tbd details in this place… photos won’t do the justice. I have no idea why this place is only rated 3 stars. We stayed second night in the ryokan of 4 stars in the same street and it’s incomparably poor compared to Fujia. I hope one day we come back here and stay longer. Thank you Fujia ❤️❤️❤️❤️

    It’s perfect
