How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe staff from the very start, even though I can't speak Japanese, was extremely accomodating to me. They also took note of my shellfish allergies and ensured that my meals do not have them. That said, I can still eat traces of shellfish and still be fine, if potential travellers are completely allergic to even the tiniest bit of shellfish, the ryokan may not be able to accomodate to your meals. The ryokan is 50mins away from Tokyo, in a quiet town of Atami. It's about 5 minutes drive from the station, or 15 mins walking if you are up for a downhill walk. I took the room with the private onsen, so I don't feel the need to intrude with other customers at the grand bath(though the grand bath is pretty sweet too). The meals are delicious. Worth it. Now as for the price, do take note it is on the pricier end so it's not for budget travellers (though this is one of yhe things worth splurging money into). To conclude, I would like to thank Ayaka for being a great attendant for the first half of my stay. As for the second half, I also would like to thank the other attendant (I unfortunately forgot her name) for being helpful and accommodating. Thank you, and I will come back again, and hopefully I can speak fluent Japanese on my second trip!
NIL.

Verified reviewspacious and clean rooms, friendly staff, enjoyed the private onsen, beautifully presented food
shower was a bit tricky to use, sometimes dinner service felt a bit rushed in some courses, bed was a bit hard for our taste

Verified reviewBreakfast and the kaiseki dinner were both in-room and exceedingly delicious and wonderful. The ofuro/outdoor bath was immensely relaxing, restorative and transforming (be sure to shower completely before entering even though it's private). The staff were formal, friendly and hospitable. This was easily my most favourite stay (one night) of the entire 14 day visit to Japan. I'd love to stay here again, but the price is high (understandably so). Definitely a once-in-a-lifetime experience to be cherished.
No complaints or dislikes whatsoever. Everything was perfect! For anyone staying here, I'd recommend the room with its own outdoor bathtub/ofuro.

Verified reviewFuruya Ryokan is a luxury Ryokan. When you arrive you are greeted by a handful of staff. They will help you with your shoes and your host will guide you to your room showing and explaining everything you need to know and where to find everything. She'll serve you some tea and get some Yukatas ready matching your size. After the introductions you can enjoy a nice bath in the public bath (resevered for hotel guests of course). Our room had a spacious hot tub outside which we also enjoyed. Dinner and breakfast is served in the room by the host who guided you to your room earlier on. The menu was amazing with many small dishes where you can discover various delicacies! Once dinner is over another person will get your futons ready and you can enjoy a good night's sleep! We were amazed by this Ryokan, the devotion and passion of the staff making everything for an unforgettable stay!

Verified reviewAbsolutely fantastic traditional hot spring inn, the facilities were top notch and the food was spectacular. The room we stayed in had its own private stone bath and overall was very spacious and clean. Although on the more expensive side, it is worth every penny and the entire experience there more than justifies the price.
None that I can think of.

Verified reviewWe stayed 2 nights, and both dinners and breakfasts were exceptional. We have been to high quality onsens before, so we had a good idea what to expect, and the quality, presentation, and variety of food items was outstanding. We also managed to be assigned an unusually large suite that we also appreciated. Our assigned hostess took excellent care of us and speaks very good English.
I have no complaints; everything was great. My only recommendation might be to have a little more detailed information (in English) about places of interest outside the onsen, especially those in walking distance. For example, are there any hiking/walking trails in the adjacent hills? Besides along the beach, are there recommended routes for running?

Verified reviewThe place was beautiful and close to the train station, which was good. We were well received and introduced to our attendant, Ami, who was very nice and attentive. The dinner was an incredible experience, and the breakfast as well (just be ready to eat many dishes during dinner and breakfast, just a heads-up). It was very relaxing to have our own onsen in the room, and we slept well on our futons. Atami was a cute city to visit, I recommend taking a tour before leaving. All in all a perfect stay for our honeymoon!
Nothing.

Verified reviewImpeccable! Just perfect in every sense. Furuya Ryokan, beating the odds of being surrounded by taller buildings, it shines like a gem, like a lily in the desert. Its serene and well thought of layout design, its attentive and dedicated team members, its exquisite and elaborate traditional kaiseki meals served in guest rooms, - it is impossible to find any faults - one feels sincerely welcome, feels at home and doesn’t feel the need to go out of the ryokan.

Verified reviewOur room was bigger than expected and had it's own onsen. The dinner was amazing with many dishes to try and was more food than we could eat. The staff was nice and helpful. Truly a first class ryokan experience!
Nothing! It's a slight walk from the train station so if that's a problem for you then you can take a taxi with no trouble. If you aren't used to Japanese style food or sleeping on the floor it will be a new experience :)

Verified reviewNot cheap, but amazing place for people who want to experience traditional Japanese riyokan. The room is marvellous and the staff is very polite. Our guide was Mrs. Mika who was extremely helpful and polite. The localization is perfect - you can walk 5 minutes to Atami Beach, where you can sunbath. The breakfasts and dinners at Riyokan are really delicious. And one thing more - the gate of the Riyokan was used in Akira Kurosawa' s film Kagemusha. Greetings from Poland!
