How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewWonderful staff. Comfortable room and kitchen room and living room. Close to the main street and close to the sight seeing.

Verified reviewThe property is not far away from the main road. The bedroom upstairs is spacious and has a nice view of the village and mountains from the balcony. The host/helper was very friendly and has a little notebook with touristic information. We encountered a national tsunami warning during the stay and the host tried to assure us that everything would be okay.
There is an uphill road from the main road to the property. In the property, the stairs are pretty steep too. There is no toilet or bathroom on the second floor.

Verified reviewThe kitchen was well stocked with amenities and cooking items. She had a wonderful Free Bowl with nice little cookies. The bathrooms were clean, the shower area was spacious, the bedrooms were comfortable and had a nice sitting area. The air conditioner worked great and I love the TV with it streaming service options. I had a great time there, it's location to the bus station and the shrine are close yet far enough away to avoid the traffic of the area. The hostess was kind, gracious, and had lots of information. My only regret is that I didn't get a chance to see her dance at The Shrine.

Verified reviewSanae, the guesthouse attendant, was very helpful in showing me my room, which had a great view of the world's largest torii and the surrounding town. The kitchen has a few dinner items, like instant noodles, since few restaurants are open. The single bed and duvet were very comfortable, and the other guests were quiet after 9 p.m. There is a nice outdoor balcony for viewing the sunset.
The location is not too far from the bus station, but it took me a while to haul my heavy backpack up the hill.

Verified reviewThe host was very nice, we stayed the night before with the same owner, but since we cannot book the same pension, we moved to this one. This pension is much cheaper compared to the one next door, as we share the house with a number of other travelers, also shared bathroom and toilet as well. The caring owner prepared a couple of cup noodles, bread and drinks etc you can grab for your early hike or if you are hungry at night (coz there's NO convenience shop at all around the area), and at a very reasonable price.
If you stayed on the second floor, you will need to climb up and down for the bath and toilet. Though the bathroom itself was clean, there's a dead cockroach just outside door, which was very scarry for me....

Verified reviewowner Ms. Sanae-san supported us much. Good and acurate information. Very dedicating and helping. She even drove us to Ukegawa bus stop when we missed a bus. Tatami mattress and futon bed was awsome to rest exhausted body. Warm shower water and icing cold water with enough pressure. a washing machine and a dryer are available with a reasonable price. free AC. not many restaurants are open in Hongu after 1700, yet Sanae-san recommend us to order kumano bento box at sushi restaurant for next day walking, then they delivered us early in the morning. huge living space with a confortable couch and relaxing atomosphe. surroundings of the house is very quiet and the sky is beautiful at night. the acommodation sells some beers, cup noodles and some snacks if you come late and missed dinner. I highly recommend this guest house.

The room is old but you can upgrade the bedsheets to make it feel more comfortable.

Verified reviewThe owner was absolutely kind and explained everything about the guesthouse rules upon arrival. The location of the place is good, 5min walk to Hongu Taisha. The place has a laundry, shared kitchen and living area and also possibility to buy some snacks - this is a plus as there are not many open places in the area after 5pm
Unfortunately, the place did not feel clean. The house itself is an older building but the bathroom and room ceilings were dirty. Some of the rooms are upstairs with rather steep stairs which we did not mind but might be a problem for someone else. The toilettes are only downstairs.

Verified reviewHuge room and homey place.
A steep uphill walk from the main road. Not a difficult climb but the mossy walkway is dangerously slippery if wet.
