How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe property is extremely clean. The living room and tea room have a cosy home feel.
The wall between rooms is thin. You might have trouble sleeping if you’re a light sleeper as you can hear movement from other rooms.

Verified reviewWe had a great stay. The owner is very friendly and helpful. He arranged dinner reservations for us. He also runs a nice coffee shop that we recommend to visit. Overall a great experience! We had a big room with futons. Everything is very clean. The bus stop is really close and a supermarket is very near, too.

Verified reviewGood experience. Remember you can send messages on booking, and the household will respond in time. This helps me solve all the problems. 1. Very typical traditional Japanese house, nice and tidy. 2. Friendly householder. Communication in English is not a problem. Householder also invites me to his cafe by the sea, which gives me a chill afternoon tea break experience. 3. 3mins walk from bus station. I remember it’s about 18mins bus drive to the railway station. 4. There are some restaurants around this neighborhood but most need reservation. You can also take bus and try restaurants along the beach. Or try the tore-tore market (before18:00)

Verified reviewMitsu and his wife were so kind ! We really felt at home for a few days. To give you an example : when we arrived, it was our son's aniversary and obviously after several days backpacking across japan we didn't have a birthday cake. Mitsu not only call a pastry Shop to help us have a cake for the dinner but he and his wife also went to buy some party balloons to enfance the expérience. We really are thankful for this great attention.

Verified reviewAuthentic old Japanese house
Share bathroom on 1/F, that you need to get down the steep stairs to shower, should mention about the share bathroom arrangement in the subject description instead of putting it in fine print Sound proof, when someone turn on the tap, it disturb my sleep
Thank you for staying at SangenYa. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the old building, but we hope you would come to visit Shirahama again. Thank you,

Verified reviewIf you want to experience real Japanese hospitality, this is the place to go. The owners went out of their way helping us to get our daughter's phone back, which she had left on the train (driving to the station in the middle of the night and organizing the key to the train!). The hotel is very cozy and the coffee (home-roasted) is great. Thank you very much!
Nothing
Thank you for staying at SangenYa and having our home roasted coffee and original sandwiches. And I'm so happy to read your comments. We hope you all enjoy the rest of your stay in Japan. Thank you.

Verified reviewStaying at Sangenya Guesthouse was one of our best experiences in Japan. The property itself is beautiful, clean and traditional. Of course, the town of Shirahama was also beautiful and having access to the beach within walking distance made it such a great location. We spent some wonderful days at the beach! Unfortunately, one of the days there was a typhoon - however our incredible hosts were so lovely and generous that it was actually a positive experience even when the weather outside was torrential. This trip marked the end of a year in Japan and even as we packed up our things to leave, we were talking about how we wanted to come back to the guesthouse in the future because the property and hosts were so wonderful. We also had some drinks at the property’s café, and both the hojicha and matcha were the best ones we’d tried in Japan! We absolutely recommend the Sangenya Guesthouse!
Nothing - it was perfect.
Thank you for staying at SangenYa and thank you for your sweet comments. We were worried about the typhoon that you wouldn't be able to enjoy your last trip in Japan but we were relieved after reading your comments. Please come back again to Japan someday. We are looking forward to the day when we can prepare matcha and hojicha latte and meeting you.

Verified reviewLovely little guesthouse with three rooms. Very cosy shared living area. You sleep on tatamis (comfortable!) and bathroom facilities are shared. We arrived by car and there was parking. Our host gave us some excellent recommendations around town. It’s in a residential neighbourhood about a 10 minute walk down to the beach and the tourist area, which is really nice (as the centre of town feels a bit touristy)
Nothing! We had a lovely stay.
