Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

United StatesHalf way through my stay there was a swarm of termites in the sink and shower, both the live bugs and wings. Thankfully, I am from Miami so I knew what they were and that they were harmless to me. I know it's an old wooden building. But perhaps treat it for termites? And put up a sign about them in English so that tourists know they may encounter them. Thanks.
I really enjoyed staying at this traditional Ryokan. It was a self-contained apartment house, with a seating area with a little courtyard, a fridge, a bathroom and an upstairs bedroom. I thought the old wood architecture and tatami was very beautiful, and going up and down the stairs each day made me feel like I was staying in a house, not a hotel! I loved the sense of privacy and the traditional Japanese feeling. The shower water pressure was strong and fantastic and the cedar wood smelled great. It was a relaxing and hot shower that was to die for each day after walking a lot through the city and temples. The comforter was nice and fluffy. It was great to stay in the old quarter, Gion, too. Excellent location with a ton of bars and restaurants surrounding it.

United KingdomNothing but perhaps be a little mindful of the steep stairs.
Amazing location - in the heart of the Gion you won’t beat it. Fantastic and helpful greeting - close to the main sights in the city. Convenience stores and laundry within a stones throw. A truly authentic and unforgettable experience. Hidden away from the crowds.

United StatesLocation was great! Lots of restaurants and shopping near by. The apartment was clean and equipped with nice tub, microwave and refrigerator. The beds were nice and comfortable. More towels and bath mats would have made the stay more comfortable as the floor gets quite cold after bath/shower. They provided robes which was a nice touch to our stay. The apartment is a little older and got quite cold so we had to keep the heat on high at all times. We felt the cold air coming through the doors and window sills which made the stay less comfortable than we had hoped. Overall, the apartment is traditional Japanese which is nice and close to everything.

The property itself was very clean, well kept and nicely priced. It felt special staying in a traditionally styled Japanese home for our Kyoto stay.

New ZealandThe bedroom upstairs was great, but the sleeping space for a third person was on the landing and had bright green exit sign glowing all night. Could not be turned off.
The location was perfect - easy walking distance to historical sites and Gion but quiet. Lovely and responsive host to questions and requests. Lovely to have the small garden area and being able to sit outside. Great bathroom facilities and good air conditioning. Great to have a kitchen.

AustraliaThe stairs are a little steep and narrow but that’s expected of all machiya.
Amazing location, in Gion, close to transportation but also very quiet with lots of great restaurants. We stayed in villa 1 with a deep ceramic bath. The Machiya is well stocked with a simple kitchen and microwave for breakfast. Love the little walk down to Tatsumi bridge and river (less than 100m) Familymart is 100m away and laundry service 2min walk. Staff were lovely and easy to communicate with. Highly recommend this place.
