A magical place where calmness reigns. You can really feel peace and tranquility here. The spaces are traditional in the best sense of the word, and absolutely beautiful — it almost makes you want to just stay there without going anywhere else! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, everything is spotless and very well maintained, and you’ll find everything you might need. For anything extra, everyone is super helpful! I had such a wonderful time here — I can’t recommend it enough.

Very nice place with good vibes and a beautiful ryokan. The room was comfortable, the airco worked well, the room and the shared bathrooms were clean. The location is amazing, easy to reach, close to many sights.

Amazing vibes from it being such an old and traditional building and the staff were so lovely, the place had a recommendation wall and it was great if you had a spare hour or two in Ur time there

The neighbourhood makes you feel you are in central gentrificated area. Like Gothic area in Barcelona or busy central of any Central European city unfortunately transformed for un respectful tourists. In a future trip I will look for another more not so touristy area.

The wooden floors can be a bit squeaky and we had to remind our daughter a couple of times to refrain from jumping, dancing, gymnastics and acrobatics to avoid bothering the other guests. Also, we had hoped for a small garden but the garden wasn't accessible to the guests. Not a biggie.

Wonderful place, we immediately felt at home. Lovely staff, beautiful rooms and a great location to explore Gion, one of the nicer parts of Kyoto (if you ask me). The (shared) toilets and bathrooms were good and clean and with plenty of capacity for the number of guests. Great tips and suggestions (e.g. breakfast options) published by the staff in the hall of the guesthouse.

The staff were very helpful and warm, the location is in Gion (right in the machiya historical section of Kyoto), the building itself is a several hundred year old machiya, very comfortable, and even has it's own shrine!

Authentic Japanese living quarters. Gives you a peak inside how Japanese families might live. Staff at front were very friendly and provided some great suggestions for dinner. Room itself had all the basics needed. Beds were comfortable and clean. Washroom in room had toilet and shower. Shared facilities were clean and rarely was someone using them.

As a solo traveller on a budget, this traditional ryokan was amazing to stay in. The location was perfect for all the popular attractions. The facilities were very clean.

The term "ryokan" is a misnomer. It's more like a youth hostel. Although the hostel has tatami mats and futons, it has no shared baths, only shared showers. The shower rooms do not have sinks. The sinks are communal, so if you'd rather not brush your teeth or wash up with other random guests, this place isn't for you.

Location: Most important sights were within walking distance or close to public transportation. The room was spacious. On site laundry facilities.

There were only 3 showers in the whole Ryokan and there were cockroaches in our room even though we didn’t have food in our room. There was also a weird smell in our room

I really wish people (the guests) were more respectful and quiet, but the hosts were very nice to share ear plugs with everyone so that we can sleep, as there were noisy guest next to our room.

I loved my little space inside the female dormitory. It was very comfortable and spacious. Everything was clean. I really liked the common room, it was quiet and relaxing and a nice place to work. The kitchen was well-equipped.

Location is great, easy access to many places. Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Place super clean, bed comfy, quiet place (even was busy), there is laundry available to all the guests. I truly recommend! Next year in April I will be back to Kyoto, and for sure I will stay there again.

I found the shower a little bit hard to figure out — it's operated by pressing a button and it turned itself off when it wanted.

I really liked my experience of staying in the ryokan. The place has a wonderful, oldschool ambience. While a bit aged, the building is really beautiful. Sleeping on a futon turned out to be more comfortable than I expected. The room was clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated. The staff lady was really kind, friendly, and made me feel welcomed.

It is quite an old building, and there is a certain old building smell in some rooms.

Came here in 2017 and lived in the hostel area and it was fantastic. Then came back again in 2025 with a single room. Honestly best place for the amount of money you pay for. Central spot and great for families but also solo travellers

This was a great place to stay in Kyoto, especially if you enjoy being in the heart of the city's historic area. The location is fantastic — full of charm, character, and beautifully preserved old architecture. The property is a hostel-style setup with shared bathrooms and a communal kitchen and dining area. The first floor has private rooms, while the second floor offers dorm-style accommodations. There's also a lovely common room with a peaceful atmosphere and a nice view outside. A perfect spot for travelers looking for an authentic and relaxed experience in Kyotos old town.

The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. The location is unbeatable in Gion, quiet yet close to many temples, the river, train stations and each of the major entertainment districts. Our room was simple but adequate and the kitchen, dining area, laundry and bathrooms close by.. A great place to base yourself in Kyoto,.
