How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe shuttle bus service was convenient for travel between the hotel and Shinagawa station. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful, and the bed and pillows were comfortable. The buffet breakfast was great and being able to utilise the lounges throughout the different sister hotels by walking through the lovely garden was really nice.
The shower pressure was limited and the room cleaning service varied whereby one day it was good and another it would be done poorly. Some staff were also unfriendly and gave off an unwelcome vibe.

Verified reviewIt’s well maintained. Food was fantastic. Love the garden and ambience. However, the check in experience and follow up on the issue faced was unbecoming for a five star hotel.
During my recent stay, my luggage was mishandled by your team during the check in. It was a complete let down. There has been no proper update or resolution offered. Time was wasted giving the report and meet up in the room for them to inspect the damages. They took more than a full day to check the surveillance footage and came back to say there’s nothing to be found, and thought there are areas that they couldn’t see, and that was it. What is even more disappointing is that when I finally managed to speak with the hotel manager, I was told, quite bluntly, that “there’s nothing we can do. And all she could offered was they will try to look into it again. This response was not only unprofessional, but it also reflects a complete lack of accountability and care towards your guests. As a paying customer, I expected basic professionalism and responsibility in handling personal belongings. Instead, I was met with negligence, poor communication, and an unwillingness to resolve the issue. I questioned for them to check the surveillance cameras to see if my luggages were in good condition upon check in, and they refuse to do so nor gave further updates. This experience has greatly affected my trust in your establishment as a group and hotel chain. I urge the hotel to take ownership of this matter and implement better procedures for guest service recovery and luggage handling in the future.

Verified reviewBeautiful garden landscape, sculptures, and decor. Also a nice breakfast buffet with both Western and Japanese options.
For staying at the Hanakohro 5 star property, not a single staff member was fluent in English. Communication fell short EVERY DAY we were there. The only time I wished to take advantage of the private club lounge, I was unable to because my 2 children could not join us during the time before dinner. Also, the beds for my children at a 5 star property were hard, low quality futons rolled onto the floor.

Verified reviewSecluded group of Grande Prince Hotel properties with an internal Japanese Garden. You may use the facilities of every hotel, including the Spa, massage chairs, etc. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to the Shinagawa station.
Although relatively close to the station, this might be a long walk for elderly or disabled people, who might benefit fron the Taxi stand outside with cars always available.

Verified reviewThe hotel itself is the traditional style wing extension off the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa. It has it's own elevator and reception (within 8am to 10pm) separate from the main lobby. We loved the ryokan room. The amenities were five star. The sake available at happy hour exclusive to Hanakhoro guests is top shelf - that alone was worth the price for me. The breakfast buffet was also a five star experience with so many delicious options both Japanese and western. We had a traditional Japanese breakfast in the club room on the Hanakhoro floor one morning, too. It is a great experience but not for every palate, so read up on it before you do it. There's always the buffet breakfast just one floor below!
I was charged an additional 30,000 yen per night for my two kids. Presumably, that's because of their access to the buffet and other amenities, but it made the price of the room very expensive.

Verified reviewClean and attention staff
This building is very dated and seems to be used by large tour groups. In addition, though in central Tokyo, it is not in a convenient location if your preference is to walk rather than take the subway or a taxi. It is highly inconvenient for walking, and we ended up having to take cabs everywhere. While the Shinagawa subway is a 10 minute walk, it is down a hill and feels inconvenient. This was thr last of four hotels on our trip, and was our least favorite in terms of location and character. I had found this hotel recommended on Condé Nast, and wish I'd stayed elsewhere in a more convenient area.

The view was hideous and depressing. It had nothing to do with what you see in pictures, so I felt cheated. The view is very important to me.

Verified reviewThe service and guidance from Maki-san(club staff from fourth floor) were warm and charming. She provided us with immense help and a heartfelt welcome, making me eager to return. In particular, she went the extra mile to find information about the welcoming candy in our room, allowing us to purchase it from the shop.
During my last night’s stay at Takanawa Hanakohro on February 21, 2025, I noticed that the two staff members(club staff fourth floor) working the night shift did not demonstrate a professional level of service.
