How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewGood place to see the island. At normal home. We had the place to ourselves and never met the staff, but worked fine with leaving out bags.

Verified reviewGood location
Was not aware of the amount of cats at the facility. The house smelled of cats and musty. 6 cats staying in one of the rooms. Our allergies went crazy. Need to be in the description. Advertised for a private bathroom but wasn’t. Family used showers while we were there and left it wet. Advertising is misleading. Never saw the proprietor and called to ask a question and didn’t speak English. Didn’t say which room was ours. We just took the one with bedding. Not organized well. Wouldn’t recommend this facility.

Verified reviewThe location is convenient to explore the art on both islands and you get a free breakfast
When entering the house, you immediately notice a smell of cat litter and mold, it just really smells in the house. There’s no hot water running and the electricity to charge your phone doesn’t work and looks like a fire hazard.

Verified reviewIf you like cats, ask the proprietor if you can access the cat room. It has a reasonably well equipped kitchen. There are 2 toilets and 2 bathrooms for the 3 bedrooms to share. It’s very near the ferry to Uno, which is handy.
The decor is a bit dated. The proprietor was very polite but didn’t speak any English.

Verified reviewSpacious room, everything was clean and owner was very kind. They do their best to make you feel comfortable. Lots of messages with instructions around the house and cute breakfast basket with my name in the fridge.
Location is not the best, but that’s the island lack of infrastructure. There is a ferry wharf nearby but it’s a very quiet area. There’s no convenience store and the few restaurants were either closed or booked out. I had to rent a bike from the other side of the island, and after returning the bike I had to take a bus back to the accommodation.

Verified reviewBreakfast was simple but appreciated as there are nearly no shops available in town
The house was run down, and some of the amenities in the shared areas weren’t stocked up. The room my partner and I had was nice but the room occupied by my mother was quite spartan. I felt the cost of the room didn’t really reflect value for money.

Verified reviewThere was a small fridge in the shared kitchen. Location was close to the ferry and the art houses. My daughter thought the futons were comfortable, but the adults disagree.
The room smelled horrible. There was a cat smell throughout the house, and the room stunk of mildew. We had to keep the sliding glass windows open the entire time to make it tolerable. The lock to the room was difficult to lock/unlock and was easy to break into if someone wanted to. The front door to the house was left unlocked and open at all times. There's a room of cats in cages, and the owner came every evening to feed them. She would then put the litter bag in the kitchen trash filling the room with a horrific smell. There were hundreds of post-its around the house with instructions, and the place was very dirty. It looked like a hoarder lived there. We couldn't wear our shoes inside the house, but the slippers provided were very used and gross. We had to meet the owner in person at the time of their choosing in order to pay for the room which meant we lost time exploring the island because we had to sit around waiting for her. Further, payment has to be in cash.

Verified reviewGuest House Shell is a very cozy accommodation with traditional Japanese room decor. It's very easily accessible from the Naoshima Port Terminal, and there are nice restaurants and a few cafes around. The Art House Projects are just a 3-5min walk away from it. The host is very nice and kind, and there are very clear and thoughtful guidelines on how to use the facility. The facility is cleaned every day and there is a nice kitchen available for using. I really enjoyed staying here, the futons were very comfy and my sleeping was very peaceful. If I visit Naoshima again I would definitely stay here again and I highly recommend it.
