Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

DenmarkOn a busy road with a train line in the back. Rooms seemed quite a flimsy construction - felt a bit shed like.
Adequate accommodation for a one night stay.

NetherlandsI stayed in the traditional Japanese style room. Loved the hammock, great way to relax after a long day of hiking. The host was super nice and let me check in earlier than the normal time. Absolute great location if you want to go to Kamikochi.

AustraliaRather old and basic, but for some that's the appeal, just not my style.
Friendly manager, nice guest house with shared bathroom and toilet, good kitchen, laundry and common room, convenient to train/bus station and convenience store. Japanese style sleeping and a hammock too if you prefer.

United KingdomIt’s a bit noisy since it’s near the train tracks but we slept well with ear plugs.
It had everything you may need for a short stay. Bathrooms had shampoo, conditioner and body wash as well as air dryer. Towels were also available. The staff were very polite and friendly. The location is very close to Kamikochi if you are planning to go hike.

CanadaThe installations are quite rudimentary but they work perfectly fine. You can hear quite a bit of the outside (and indoor) noises.
Perfect location to visit Kamikochi, you are much closer than if you were staying in Matsumoto and it's a lot quieter

CanadaGuesthouse Shimashima was a wonderful base for exploring and hiking in Kamikochi (very short walk to bus stop and train station with a convenience store equally close by). We LOVED the authentic sauna experience, cozy common area, welcoming staff, and adjacent restaurant. Felt like a home away from home.

JapanThere was no in room TV.
The food served at the restaurant was very good although there was only one choice. Small but very clean. My first time to stay at a guesthouse so I cannot compare this place with other ones but I think this place is good enough.

AustraliaIt's budget accommodation but has everything you need. It's clean. It has all amenities required and is accessible by public transport. So there are no negatives.
Great local knowledge assistance with where to walk and how to get there. All transport options are just down the road so if you don't want the cost of staying at mountain accommodation and/or want to walk in different locations each day it's well placed.

CanadaWhere it was located! Very great spot you just need to be organized with your bus schedules to get into the mountains (pre book) , not as simple to just get on and off according to times of bus . You need tickets and once they are gone they are gone The accommodation was very cool and modern and comfortable for those who like the mountains

GermanyAfter a day of hiking in Kamikochi we wanted to have dinner and a sauna. Neither was possible in the guesthouse, so don’t be fooled by the description. Also the pictures were really different to how it looked at the end. It is far more rundown. Most of the nicer pictures are from the sauna area which is not accessible by the guests. Also there is a loud street next to it and the walls are quite thin so you hear other guests quite loudly. Definetly not a calm paradise. This was the most expensive place we stayed in Japan and it was also the worst. Better just get a hotel in Matsumoto.
Service was nice and room was clean
