How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe staff Kaiseki dinner was amazing! It’s a small old ryokan, very quiet with only sounds of nature There weren’t many other guests so we were always alone when visiting onsen baths
- we booked a Japanese room with garden view, the photos looked like the room should be on the first floor with direct views of the garden. When we arrived we were taken to the room on the second floor, that looked completely different from the photos, even the furniture was different. I was disappointed but wasn’t able to bring it up as soon as possible and then just accepted the fact. The garden view was partial, we enjoyed nice maple views though. - There are only two baths, only one is outdoor and has golden Arima water. The other is indoor and has normal water. They swap outdoor between men and women at 8 PM. So assuming you stay for one night and check in at 3 pm, men get to visit outdoor bath twice, before 8 pm and in the morning. And women only get the chance after 8 pm. Indoor wasn’t that bad either, but outdoor is definitely better. - no private bath on the territory, they can take you by car to another place that has it, it costs 5000 yen and it’s indoor

Verified reviewWe truly had a wonderful stay here. The staff were incredibly accommodating and they were able to prepare completely vegetarian meals for me, which were excellent. My friend, who had the regular meals, said the dinner was the best meal he ever had! It's nestled away outside the town center which provided a really peaceful atmosphere. It's worth the uphill walk to get there. You can fall asleep to the sounds of flowing water from the nearby stream. The bathing facilities were small but excellent. It's a small ryokan so there aren't many guests using the facilities at any given time. I had the baths to myself all morning. Definitely recommended! Staying here was a highlight of our trip.
The uphill walk to get there with our particularly heavy luggage was not fun but it was worth it, especially with the empty onsen waiting for us upon our arrival.

Verified reviewWas a very beautiful and old Japanese style property, with a beautiful garden and a traditional room. The Japanese kaiseki meal was excellent, the staff were excellent and the outdoor pool was very nice.
There was no heat in the toilet or shower, though they did provide a portable heater for shower, but toilet area was cold. If you are not used to sleeping on a tatami, or have mobility issues, you might have trouble with the sleeping arrangement. We were comfortable enough.

Verified reviewThe room was great with a nice garden view especially in autumn. The meals and the staff are great with details as well as quality.
The bath is kind of small and since it's in a corner, coming via car may be anxiety inducing for inexperienced drivers.

Verified reviewLovely little hotel in Arima onsen. We chose the hotel because of the view from the room, and it did not disappoint. The fall foliage view from the room was breathtaking. The food was also great, both dinner and breakfast. The staffs were also incredibly nice and helpful. Since it's a small hotel, they treated us with great care and attention.
The hotel is quite small, so it lacks the facilities of big hotels. The onsen area is also small. Not really an issue if you enjoy the peace and quite.

Verified reviewThe inn was very well kept and maintained. Although the inn itself is on the older side, the furniture and decor is very traditional and is cared after. The inn is very cozy and comfortable, along with the onsen being in incredible shape. This is a very nice stay for a night as the onsen is essentially private with very few other guests sharing at once. The dinner and breakfast service was incredible. With a traditional japanese breakfast and dinner, we were very well taken care of in terms of food. Sleeping arrangements were excellent as well, with service to lay down and put away the futons. Staff was beyond excellent and although we did not speak a lot of japanese, they still understood us and provided excellent service. In addition to our stay, we forgot some clothes in the closet and the inn offered to send them back to us before we leave japan. Excellent service.
Some of the furniture and carpet, although well maintained, can tell that it is getting up there in terms of age. Cracks in the leather in the couches as well as stains due to the age of the carpet can be seen. Aside from these two things, everything else was excellent.

Verified reviewThis was a taste of old school japanese luxury. We were treated like royalty and the food was amazing. I never expected to have a multi course tasting menu served to us privately in our room. Same for breakfast. The staff were excellent and picked us up and dropped us off at the station. Great place.
The onsen kept changing from male to female as one side was nicer than the other. Missus missed out.... but that was minor compared to experience

Verified reviewMy stay was exceptional, with luxurious amenities, a serene onsen, and a kaiseki meal that was an unforgettable culinary journey. The kaiseki dinner was the highlight, with each dish masterfully crafted to showcase seasonal ingredients. The outdoor onsen was also a wonderful experience, especially in the cool evening air. The location was peaceful and scenic, perfect for a relaxing stay.
The onsen could have been better equipped with basic amenities like lotion and hairdryers, which were missing. Also, the entrance to the parking lot was quite narrow and tricky to navigate.

Verified reviewA very authentic hotel in a quiet location where it is nice to hear the sound of the water in the river. One feels truly somewhere far away from the city in solitude with nature.
Unfortunately, there was an incident - we ordered additional massage services and the hotel representative we contacted quoted a different price to what we paid in the end when we checked out. We tried to explain this to the accountant at the reception, but she did not try to get into the situation and unconditionally to all our claims answered simply “no”. This, of course, spoiled the overall impression of this place, because the hotel is not cheap and would like not such an attitude. The staff should definitely have good electronic translators or basic knowledge of English.

Verified reviewVery cozy little Ryokan in the mountains. The room had a lovely garden view. Luckily we were the only ones in the ryokan, so we could use the onsen - we have tattoos and the onsen is not private :-) The food was delicious and served in the room, and the staff was super kind.
