Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

NetherlandsSound insulation is not very good with the other rooms, I guess this is because of the traditional house design. Try avoiding bring large suitcases as there are some stairs to reach the guest house. We had shipped our big luggage directly from the airport to our next hostel, so that it was not an issue for us.
Very nice owners, can easily chat about their stories and Tokoname. Nice breakfast. Room is a bit small but quite confortable. Nice shared shower and toilet. Nice house too with a beautiful design and lots of potteries and right next to the Cat statue, the start of the Pottery walk.

United KingdomIt was all perfect!
We stayed at Hill House on the first and last day of our trip to Japan. Jun and Kazu are very friendly and welcoming and we hope to return soon. We feel we have made new friends. The house is beautiful and very comfortable. It is 150 years old and has a lot of character. The house also has many beautiful art objects and ceramics. Breakfasts are very tasty and are served on handmade cups and plates. The beds are comfortable and we slept very well. Kazu was very helpful and generously took us to the station and the airport. We were also invited to a birthday barbecue on our last night and enjoyed delicious food and drink and meet some very nice people. Kazu also arranged for us to meet a neighbour master ceramicist for a teapot making demonstration which was a very special experience. Tokoname is a lovely town full of ceramics and lucky waving cats - Maneki Neko - a giant Maneki Neko can be seen from the bedroom! It is one of Japan's six ancient kiln towns and is the setting for the anime film A Whisker Away. It is very close to Nagoya airport so makes a great place to start or finish your trip. Thank you so much Jun and Kazu for making us so welcome. We will be returning!

JapanSadly we did not get to stay there.
I booked to stay here because the reviews were so high but I got a message from the property saying that I had made a booking at the exact same time as someone else so he introduced us to stay at his friend’s place instead. I went to Hills to meet the owners at night time though and they were pleasant.

United KingdomWe loved everything about our stay!
It had a true homely feel - you will be staying with a local couple who are the most wonderful people. They are both deeply passionate about Tokoname artists and will be able to give you a lot of information about them. They delivered an authentic experience of living in a Japanese household. The rooms are cute, clean, and comfortable too!

AustraliaI loved everything. :)
“Hills house two” has the most wonderful home away from home feeling. Gorgeous traditional Japanese house, filled with stunning pottery and art, and a zen atmosphere. The hosts were so welcoming and gorgeous! Picked us up on arrival and drove us to station when we left. Helped us navigate the town and visit the local crafts people. I really had the most wonderful conversations with them, and their ceramic knowledge is impressive. I didn’t want to leave, and wished I stayed longer! Breakfast cooked with love, and was super delicious, and served on the most amazing ceramics. Situated on the pottery trail in the most delightful and truly enchanted town of Tokoname, highly recommend! Especially pottery lovers. You will be in heaven. 😘😘

United KingdomThe owners of this guest house are extremely friendly and hospitable. When she heard that I was interested in ceramics, my hostess immediately took me to visit the studios of two potters who are friends of hers. The old house has been carefully renovated and my room was interesting and comfortable ( though the low beams were a hazard!). The cooked breakfast was very good.

The owners were incredibly welcoming and made sure we were comfortable from the minute we entered throughout the duration of our stay. We were offered iced tea as we arrived in from the summer heat, and the rooms were always chilled with AC for our arrival which we appreciated especially as we were travelling with our baby in mid summer. The house itself is homely whilst also having many beautiful works of art and various cultural and scholarly works, it was fascinating to look around. The couple have lived in Tokoname for over 4 decades and are friends with many potters and artists, so during this time they've acquired quite a number of unique pieces. Despite the beauty of the place, I felt totally relaxed and at home here with my family.

Wonderful and unforgettable stay. A comfortable, historic and well located guesthouse, the owners are among the friendliest hosts I've ever met in my years of travel. They were so accommodating and generous with sharing their time, attention and knowledge. Thank you so much! I highly recommend this stay in Tokoname. Make sure you order the cooked breakfast, too. It was a great way to start the day and chat as well as tasting delicious.

JapanNothing at all!
My expectations were high from all the amazing reviews I'd seen on here beforehand, but the property exceeded them! I loved everything about it, and I only wish I could have stayed longer. A beautiful building, amazing location, extremely kind and friendly hosts, very well-equipped - and the breakfast was so huge and delicious that I can't believe it was only 500 yen. A meal like that would have been at least twice the price in a restaurant! Thank you so much for my wonderful stay here.

Hong KongThe host couple is super friendly. I had a flight delay so I arrived rather late than expected. The host was so nice to offer a pick up. He even drove me to the restaurant for late dinner. I really appreciated their hospitality. I can see the cat Tokonyan from my room window. The homemade breakfast was extraordinary! Very delicious and caring. The house is also full of pottery, tableware, art and more! I had a pleasant day in Tokoname! I saw some previous comments about the slope walking up the house, but actually they are really just a few steps, within 1-2 minutes, nothing hard! Thank you!
