Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesWe felt exceptionally pampered at this beautiful, serene, detail-oriented stay. The hotel staff were extremely kind and conscientious and ensured that we had a positive experience, and no detail was left unnoticed in making our stay peaceful and luxurious. The food is a particular standout—our meals were fantastic and the dining experience exceptional.

United KingdomBreakfast and dinner are too early, which made our stay less comfortable. We would prefer to eat one hour or more later than the latest time. It’s not very convenient for us.
Very tranquil place to stay set around Japanese garden in the centre and tatami floors you can walk around barefoot. Service is excellent and they anticipate your needs. Rooms are nicely designed with comfortable beds and lots of space. It’s nice that they have free coffee you can get anytime. Everything is spotlessly clean including the onsen in the hotel. The hotel is very quiet and it’s easy to be feel relaxed and away from the world here. Highly recommend this hotel to stay for a few days. Food is also good, traditional Japanese multi course meal and breakfast of a high quality and beautiful presentation.

New ZealandMaybe a little firm in the pricing.
The staff are helpful friendly attentive and smiling. The onsen waters are very therapeutic. The rooms are large. Ours what huge. The location in Tendo is perfect and we loved walking the hilly park behind the property. This is a wonderful Ryokan with a wonderful traditional feel.

United StatesWhat a great find in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture. Not many tourists know of Tendo but it’s served by Shinkansen bullet train so I picked it. Hotel itself is wonderful, offering station pickup/dropoff; the highlight were the meals. I took the half-board plan. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding; dining in private rooms with excellent service and local ingredients. After dinner I relaxed in the onsen spa and then relaxed in a semi-private sitting area, drinking free matcha tea and enjoying the garden scenery. Must visit!

United StatesI wished I had spent more time here since it was my favorite hotel in Japan. It is about 3-4 hours away from Tokyo and the Shinkansen did not allow for very large luggage - if you plan to bring it, ship it to the hotel instead.
Gorgeous hotel! The inside had couch chairs to sit in and face the courtyard that I could have stayed all day. The private bath was also fantastic! The hotel recommended Tendo Days tour group to go to Ginzan Onsen, which was super easy to book. We had a great time.

United StatesSince it is in Tendo, there is not as much to do within walking distance.
Beautiful property. The room was spacious! Even for Western standards. The private onsen was very nice. We did not try the public onsen. The staff were courteous and helpful. Although the staff had limited English proficiency, they all used a translation app to help with communication which was incredibly helpful.

SingaporeNothing.
Everything, from the food to the room. I booked the smallest room which I did not know that there is a private onsen. My meals were in a separated room which I feel is better than having inside my own room. This hotel is worth staying for the experience. There are guests around but I was surprised to not hear any noises. I felt like I was being served as a royalty. The sake that I had, does not have any alcohol smell, it tasted so good and it had a cherry taste to it. I enjoyed the private outdoor onsen and I regretted not trying the public onsen. Also, breakfast usually starts at 730am but I had a train to catch, the hotel offered to serve breakfast at 7am. I was already awake at 5am to enjoy the onsen for the last time. My dinner was at 6pm which was the earliest timing.

United StatesWow. What can I say. This location was incredible and one of the greatest regrets is that I could not stay longer. From the way the reception was waiting for me outside upon my arrival, to they way they introduced me to the hotel, to the 5 star treatment I received for all of meals (which were very interesting multi course meals all expertly arranged and served). The room itself was excellent as well. *very* spacious, traditional tatami mats, nice big tub that has an open window to the center garden and skies. Nice cold AC. I could go on and on about this location. If you view this message, and are deciding on this location, just do it. Trust me. Book it, with the meal plan, and go visit Yamadera during the day. Special shout out to Hiroe-san. Thank you for making my meal experience so enjoyable and doing your best to put up with my terrible Japanese!

IndonesiaAlmost nothing!
We were upgraded to a room with a private onsen. The place was clean, staff members were kind, helpful, and very hospitable. Although communication was challenging they tried very hard to answer every question we had, which were many (highly appreciate the guy attending to dinner!) We loved the complimentary roasted green tea and wanted to buy some for souvenir but they didnt sell it. Instead they gave us 5 sachets as souvenir, much appreciated! Would come back if we have a chance.8
