How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewExceptional service from free pick up and drop off from the station, warm welcome with towels after the rain and brilliant tour of the property. Erica was a brilliant host, chatting with us over dinner and explaining the sake tasting. The whole building was beautiful with everything wooden, antique and lots of comfy seating and books to read. Super clean bathroom, hot water despite being in the middle of nowhere. Comfy beds and everything you could need in the room. Wish we could have stayed longer
It was all perfect

Verified reviewWe loved the vibe of this beautifully situated guesthouse. It’s not a 5* hotel but it is genuine, authentic and really thoughtfully and comfortably equipped. The staff were fab and chatted generously about themselves and Japan and were really helpful with ongoing hiking not to mention cooking really delicious food. Also did the sake tasting which was really fun. Highly recommend

Long hike up the mountain road from the train station, but that was our choice, so we can’t complain.

Verified reviewThis was one of the most beautiful and welcoming places we stayed on our 3 week trip to Japan. The space is full of treasures, comfortable and comforting, welcoming to kids and adults and has everything you need for a mountain retreat. The meals, breakfast and dinner were delicious. The sake tasting was fun and so accessible. The view, in the morning and evenings especially, was spectacular. It’s very easy to do several walks with this as a base. Highly recommend.

Verified reviewHostel Yui-an is a beautfiul traditional farmhouse which the owners have lovingly and stylishly renovated. It's a gorgeous and relaxing place to stay amidst the stunning landscape of the Kiso valley. It's a perfect place to stay for hiking and walking the Nakasendo trail. Verified reviewThis hostle's location is absolutely beautiful! Also the building was decorated so cozy and welcoming. The futon was comfortable, and our private shower was very clean. They have a large common space, and a large kitchen for the guests to use. Would have loved to stay more then one night and enjoy the place more! Also the hosts were super nice, and they have a free pickup service from the station.
I feel that the value for the price we paid was way off. I stayed at some places that offered the same stuff but for way cheaper. There was no air condition in the private room! Just two little fans. After hiking all day I really wished for some air conditioning :( I really wanted to have dinner here but at last they serve only curry, which we are not fans of. Our private room was on the ground floor so we heard the other guests talking all evening as if they were sitting in the room with us. If we had pay less i wouldn't complain as much, but my expectations were way higher.

Verified reviewWe will always remember our magical stay at Yui-an. Thank you to the kind hosts and staff for creating such a warm, friendly and comfortable environment. The day we left we walked in the rain for hours and were in good spirits as we talked about the beautiful farmhouse, stunning landscape and fascinating conversations with fellow guests and staff the night before.

Verified reviewThis is a must if you are hiking the Nakasendo trail. We arranged for the shuttle to pick us up at the train station. It was easy to arrange and very nice to take advantage of. The ambiance and vibe of this "hostel" is fantastic. If we had it to do all over again, we would have stayed all three nights in this place and taken the train to other portions of the trail. There is plenty of space with a couple of sitting rooms to hang out in. The food was great (if you make reservations). The staff was fantastic and very sociable. We also met one of the owners and she gave us the story of the place and about the renovations of this 200 year-old gem. If you love good craftsmanship, you will love this place.
