How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe staff was amazing and very welcoming, the onsen was a great way to relax. The rooms were clean and super cozy. The price paired with the quality time spent here gives this place a must stay status for me!

Verified reviewVery nice private onsen, fits about 2 people comfortably. Mixed onsen use was allowed. Bathing robes were available to borrow free of charge Nice traditional rooms We arrived a little after the official check time but this was no issue since the owners were very kind and welcoming.

Verified reviewQuiet neighborhood
It was expensive
I'm sorry, but the doors to this inn are open from 3 o'clock, and the doors are closed, so I don't think they understand the meaning of Japanese. Only one side is open. There is no need to call. I don't think it's right to give a low score for something like this. As for the price, I think it's quite cheap for the New Year holidays. Next time, I think it's better to check carefully before booking a hotel.

the staff is rude
First of all, the reservation plan cannot be changed or cancelled under any circumstances. We made special arrangements, but this is the rating, it's really terrible. There was no gratitude at all. We said we would arrive at 11pm, but they didn't come even though we waited until 1:30. All the lights and hot spring were on until 1:30. Although it usually closes at 12:00, the next day we were criticised by multiple emails saying that the room can only accommodate 3 people. We explained that up to 4 people can stay, but all the futons were prepared in the drawers. Finally, the towels in the room were purposely wiped with coffee and were dirty. It's terrible that they can give such a low rating now... It's unacceptable that they took photos and videos of the staff without permission.

Onsen has to be booked in advance as it is private use only. It is quite small.

Verified reviewOne of our favorite stays on the trip. Quaint, cute, comfortable with a wonderful family running the show. Onsen was a WONDERFUL addition. The perfect small town sized staying spot.
The only downside was being on foot and accessing the property. Far from bus stops/the train station.

Very far from everything! Except for the coast hike… Everything written about the place is pretty true - old and has an damp smell. Bees in the room sometimes…

Verified reviewThe owners are so friendly and helpful! It’s a very homey place in an area with many other guest houses. The BBQ was great!!
It’s a bit on the older side and, in the summer, you’ll get lots of insects inside and outside. The futons in the Japanese-style room are on the thinner side.
Thank you for your stay. Because it is a national park, there will be a lot of insects outside the house in summer. As long as the windows are not opened, they will not come in. BBQ outside is unavoidable. I’m sorry. In addition, we use tatami mattresses in Japanese-style hotels. That's right, it won't be a Western-style mattress like a hotel! We also have other rooms with thick mattresses. If you tell me, I will change them for you! You need to communicate this with us in advance. Thank you.

Verified reviewthe hot spring was nice. the people were friendly and helpful even though communication was very difficult. they could not speak english. communication went through google translator. the air conditioning in the room was good.
For the price we paid I expected more. The whole building was hot and very stuffy. CERTAINLY not pleasant. You sweat very quickly. The room was also not very clean, quite a bit of dust. I also thought it was a pity that you didn't get free drinking water, for this price it was only a small thing. We also paid for breakfast once. This was disappointing for the price. The location was not good. there was nothing around. he must already have a car to get around here. No shop or restaurant nearby. It was quite hard walking through the mountains. The sights were also quite far on foot. You could possibly buy food at the accommodation, but these prices were also a bit more expensive than another restaurant.
Thank you for staying at Hanamizuki Onsen. Our hotel usually checks in at 3 pm, but you came earlier, so we let you come in and wait in the living room. The price is already considered cheap in our generation. It happened to be a major holiday in Japan during your visit, so the price was a little more expensive than usual. And unfortunately, the typhoon also came and caused the weather in Japan to be stuffy. It wasn't that our buildings were stuffy. We all had air conditioners. The main reason was the weather. We also clean the room every day, but if you are more strict, you should book a better 5-star hotel. There are no convenience stores around the villa area where our hotel is located in Izu Kogen, but there are many restaurants and convenience stores within 20 minutes’ walk, and there are many scenic spots within 10 minutes to 20 minutes’ walk. Maybe you didn’t find them! Breakfast is the Japanese breakfast you asked for, but there was almost no rice left, which is very rude in Japan. If you are not used to eating, we also have foreign food. It also left us feeling very disappointed and wasted.

Verified reviewsome decorations are cute.
it's totally different from what you see in the picture (booking.com)the garden is dirty, the facility is a mess ,not worthy to pay 10,000yen each person for 1 night.its not a resort its a hostel.with no bathroom and shared toilet.
First of all, thank you for being able to book Hanamizuki Onsen during the Obon Festival, a major holiday in Japan. It may be that the price is a little more expensive than usual due to the holiday, but the price for a suite and a double room in our Izu Kogen area is already very cost-effective. I’m sorry, maybe you don’t understand this and feel unacceptable. Secondly, we are a hot spring hotel, not a big hotel. There is no separate shower and toilet in the room. It can also be confirmed in the photos on the website. The hot spring is a private hot spring and the toilet is public. You may have misunderstood when you said that the garden is dirty, because we are building a swimming pool, so there will be some clutter next to it, and the garden is carefully designed and managed. Our guests are full of praise for us here, not my own. Finally, I would like to say that no matter where you stay, please abide by the regulations. Please take away your personal hygiene items and do not leave them in the room. Great taste in summer.
