Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United StatesIt was a bit older--te common areas and the onsen (spa) could use a renovation.
The location was well situated close to the train station, with beautiful views of the mountains. I appreciated that they provided round-trip transportation to the station.

BelgiumThe futon beds were a bit too thin. We didn't sleep very well. All the rest was fabulous! :)
We asked to have breakfast and diner at the hotel. This was traditional Japanese food and it was absolutely delicious.

AustraliaIt’s a little far from the station - fine on the way there as they collected us, a bit annoying in the way out as had to catch a local bus with luggage. The onsen itself is just ok. Clean and fine but nothing special.
Lovely traditional onsen hotel with very friendly staff and the dinners were really really tasty. We had a fabulous time staying here and liked that there were mainly Japanese visitors. We hired e-bikes (delivered directly to the hotel) and cycled up the Atera Valley and it was a highlight of our two weeks in Japan. Highly recommend.

United StatesThe shared bathrooms aren't ideal but it really wasn't an issue for our 1 night stay. The onsen smells like chlorine, but it's unclear if that's in the water or something used to clean the onsen.
The rooms were great and very comfortable, we had no issues. The meal sets were delicious. We appreciated that they did their best to accommodate our allergies, which we let them know about ahead of time. The onsen facilities were old but clean and comfortable. We also appreciated the shuttle they provided to the train station once we checked out.

JapanClean, good breakfast/dinner, onsen. Note there is no private showers which is Japanese style but may bother some foreigners. Very very 80s Japanese style. Coin operated washer and dryer. Nice views from the room. Staff helped me book a taxi. I speak Japanese but I believe the staff spoke little English.

United StatesOnsen is old and needs some renovation, no toilet or shower in room, no wifi in room, you have to sit in the lobby to get wifi access. Not quite a "forest spa".
Room was big and there was a nice sitting area with view of the mountains. Futons and pillows were comfortable. There was a free shuttle to the train station. Food was good (3000 yen, 2000 for dinner and 1000 for breakfast pp).

AustraliaWe tried to get a taxi to the station as it was raining when we had to leave but that’s not possible on the weekend.
Our big 10-tatami room also had an extra space with two armchairs — welcome after a few days sitting on the floor in other ryokans. Onsen large and a good temperature, not as hot as some others. Dinner and breakfast good and plentiful although not quite the quality of some others. The room also had a basin which was handy. A 15-minute walk to the start of the stunning Atera Valley. Great cheap lunch at the (not related) restaurant next door.

SingaporeThere is only one soba restaurant next to the hotel if you need lunch and only if it's open. The other option would be to head down to Nojiri. We chose to eat cup noodles purchased at the hotel reception as it was raining heavily. The hotel reeks of cigarettes but that is easily solved by opening the windows. But that attracted bugs in though.
It's proximity to Atera valley was the major push factor as we do not drive. A shuttle bus that brings guests to town is right outside the hotel main entrance although we did not use it. The onsen, breakfast and dinner served was fantastic!

AustraliaThe only shower facilities is at the onsen, which is OK.
The staff is super friendly and helpful even though they don't speak English, we communicate with Google translation. Luckily the hotel provides van transport to and from the train station as it's a 30 Min walk. Kaiseki food is good. The best of all is the Atera Valley close by - beautiful unspoilt scenery. Onsen is good.
