Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomNot a problem for me, but if onsens aren’t your thing, then there are no other washing facilities.
It was characterful and service was exceptional. Food was superbly presented and varied. We liked the onsen.

CanadaIt was a wonderful way to experience a traditional ryokan. We were warmly welcomed with a shuttle pickup, tea service, and a clear explanation of the facilities. The staff was very kind and attentive. The location is perfect, right by the shrine and nature. The onsen was relaxing, and the whole atmosphere was peaceful.

United StatesWe had a hard time getting our room cool enough at night to the point that I had trouble sleeping. Also there was a foul smell that I noticed at night while I was awake for the room temperature. Not sure what that was.
Staff and general atmosphere were exceptional, a completely unique experience not to be missed when in Japan.

United KingdomStaying at the hotel was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had. I went as a solo traveller and can imagine it would be even better with family and friends. An authentic Japanese Ryokan - when I arrived the hostess first explained how everything worked, and made me feel at ease. They provided a yatuka outfit that I could wear around the hotel which was fun. Dinner was extraordinary, with a huge variety of things to try. The onsen overlooking the river was lovely and I could hear the river sounds as I fell asleep on my futon bed. The best part was waking up at 6am to visit the Tori gate and the shrine (5 mins walk away) when it first opened and it was almost empty. The ropeway station was also nearby so I headed there in the morning and didn’t need to wait in line. Incredible experience and certainly worth treating yourself to a night at Iwaso!

United KingdomMy stay at Iwaso was magical. It was my first experience in a ryokan and I wasn’t sure about going as a solo traveler but it worked perfectly. The onsen is wonderful - I loved the view over the trees. It was very clean and they provide helpful instructions. The food was excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were generous and well balanced. I wish I had stayed longer. I’d love to return!

United KingdomQuite expensive relative to other similar Ryokan we have stayed in, but maybe that is because of its location on the very popular Miyajima.
Beautiful ryokan, set on the hill overlooking the village at Miyajima. Food was an outstanding kaiseki experience and staff couldn't have been nicer or more helpful.

New ZealandWe thought our room attendant could have been more communicative and outgoing. She did not engage in small talk or ask us questions to make us feel at ease, so our interactions felt slightly awkward. She did not explain how to wear the yukata properly (we saw several guests staying at the hotel wearing it incorrectly) or what the bathing etiquette was. Although we eventually found this information in a booklet inside our room, we would have appreciated a verbal explanation from our attendant and for her to tell us to refer to the booklet if we needed more info. We also felt she did not fully explain the supplies and amenities in our room. For example, we saw other guests wearing sandals with their yukata. We didn't know where our sandals were located or if the hotel had forgotten to give them to us. We also had no idea if we were supposed to make the futon beds ourselves, or if we had to request for them to be made when we were ready to sleep. We eventually found the sandals after "exploring" the room and opening several cupboards. And our futon beds were made for us while we were at dinner, so it was a nice surprise after our meal. During dinner and breakfast, our attendant did not explain what the dishes and ingredients were and how/when to eat the food. The provided menu was also vague. For example, we were told by our attendant and the menu that we were eating "appetisers" and "sashimi". It would have been nice to know what exactly the appetisers were and what type of fish was the sashimi. We were also left wondering if we should begin eating or wait for more dishes to be served.
When we arrived at Miyajima Island, we went to the tourist information centre inside the pier terminal and a helpful staff person called the hotel to pick us up with their free shuttle service. We waited less than 5 minutes for the driver to arrive. He was friendly and greeted us nicely. We arrived at the hotel before the check-in time, so the staff arranged for our luggage to be moved into our room when ready. There were no forms to fill out about dietary requirements as all requests had to be received at least a week prior to the check-in date. We returned later in the afternoon to check-in and was shown to our room and offered tea and a momiji manjū snack by our room attendant. Our Japanese-style room was spacious, clean and comfortable. We also had a private toilet and shower/bath. Dinner and breakfast was in a communal dining room with other guests at set meal times. The food was tasty and served promptly. The public onsen/bathing facilities were clean and relaxing.

United StatesThe location is awesome. Really beautiful environment, full of nature. The hotel is a mixed between modern and traditional Japanese style. The food was very good, but also with some occidental feeling. In general it is a great place to stay, eat well and enjoy the island. Staff super friendly and I will definitely stay again.

United StatesThis is the sort of place I have in mind when I think of a traditional ryokan. No complaints. There were even deer wandering outside below my window during my stay. Plus, it's an ideal starting point for making a sunrise climb of Mt. Misen.
