Nothing! Getting down the stairs was a challenge if you need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. We were well aware of the stairs before we booked

Authentic historic Japanese house in a great location

Mon san's house is for those who prefer living like a local. It's tucked away in the historic part of Omi-Hachiman - a short taxi ride away from the train station - but once there, the beautiful surrounding streets where the canals and attractions lie are all within walking distance (Mon san offers bikes too). I stayed in winter, and the house was admittedly cold in the unheated kitchen and passageway (the bathroom required a bit of bravery too! It's modern and there's a heater within, but it's accessed via a courtyard which is cold). However, the tatami living and sleeping (futon) area was well insulated and cosy. I can imagine in summer it would be lovely to throw open all the sliding doors between the living area to the main street, and sit there and enjoy the balmy breeze coming through. All in all, a comfortable, cozy and private stay in a beautifully preserved house with a charming tsuboniwa (courtyard). Recommended for lovers of old houses and immersive experiences.

not related to the hostel. There is a very little choice of shops around. At least need 10 min. Distance by car to get to the train station with department store and restaurant.

The weather when we stayed 🤣

The house feels like a trip back into old Japan with sliding doors and tatami mats in each room. We loved the whole vibe of the place. It's also right on the popular heritage street of Omihachiman and a short walk away from the old canal.

Wonderful rental property on a historic street in a quiet town, and a unique opportunity to stay in a traditional Machiya townhouse. It's the kind of experience that you come to Japan for, sleeping on futon in a tatami mat room, experiencing small town village life. The house has been beautifully restored and has everything you need. The host, who I never actually met in person, offered helpful restaurant recommendations and assistance making reservations, in addition to very detailed instructions on getting to the property from the train station by public bus. The toilet and bath is located in a separate building, which is a bit inconvenient in the middle of the night, but also contributes to the unique experience. I loved my stay here.

Loved the location, the host and the house itself. Taking your coffee/tea in the garden in the morning is the perfect way to start your day in Omihachiman.

The futon! I'm too soft for them. If the host can do anything it's maybe to provide additional pillows. The ladder to the loft was precarious. Not detracting score here because this is what you are booking! People with back and knee problems be warned.

The stay at this machiya was incredible. The scenery of this part of town was a major highlight of our trip. Our host gladly provided a second bicycle on advance request and also booked a taxi for our departure when we asked for help. The garden made the outdoor trip to the bathroom enjoyable even when it rained a little. There aren't many dining options so be warned, 7eleven is an easy 10 min cycle away and a cultural experience in itself.

Perfect location, traditional machiya house in a quiet street. The bathroom area is outside but it was not inconvenient. The host was very flexible with the check in time and promptly responded to all my questions.
