How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewThe historical beauty of it is pretty mind-blowing. To get to stay in a home that steeped in history is very special. Hitty and his team who run this house are very hospitable and helpful.
My elderly parents couldn’t sleep in the bedroom upstairs as the stairs are quite steep. But it wasn’t a problem for us as we set up the futons for them downstairs.
Thank you very much for your warm review. We are truly honored that you appreciated the historical beauty of this house and that your stay felt special. It was a pleasure to host you and your family. We’re sorry that the steep stairs made it difficult for your parents to sleep upstairs, but we’re glad to hear that setting up futons downstairs allowed them to rest comfortably. Your thoughtfulness toward them was very touching. We were also deeply moved by the beautiful illustration of a bird soaring through the wide sky that you left behind. It felt as though the bird symbolized your family, journeying across the ocean on a great adventure. We sincerely look forward to welcoming you again someday.

The house is very well located, near the station, and we walked to all the places we wanted to see (samouraï district, Kenroku-en garden, Omicho market, etc)

Verified reviewThe property was gorgeous and well situated in Kanazawa. It's a fun place with wonderful history and an incredibly helpful host. I'd highly recommend it to families traveling in the area.
Only downside is that the futon beds are tough to get used to, but they were fine in the long run, and good for the back :).
Thank you so much for your kind words and for taking the time to share your experience! I’m so glad you enjoyed the history of the house and your time exploring Kanazawa. It was a pleasure hosting your family. Yes, the futon beds can take a bit of getting used to, but I’m happy to hear they worked out in the end (and hopefully helped your back too!). Verified reviewOur whole experience, from check-in to our last moments was incredible. HittySan met us at the door after confirming our arrival time and lead us on a wonderful, informative tour of the home and area. He provided an EXCELLENT map with details of local attractions, touring tips, and restaurant recommendations. We carried it with us while exploring. Kanazawa was lovely and safe - the loop bus made touring the city a breeze and taxis were plentiful when needed. Coming back to this home after a long day exploring was so relaxing and refreshing. If we are in the Kanazawa area again, we would love to stay again at this incredible historic property.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. It was a pleasure to welcome you, and I’m glad the map and recommendations were helpful during your exploration of Kanazawa. I’m happy to hear you found the home relaxing after your days of sightseeing. It would be an honor to welcome you back to our historic machiya if you visit Kanazawa again! Best regards, Hitty

Verified reviewWe chose this property for its location, suitability for our family group and the positive reviews about the hospitality - we were not disappointed. Hitty was a marvelous host - responsive and attentive to making our stay enjoyable. Little touches such as Hitty's explanation of the house's history (including showing us some artefacts!) and welcome sweets were lovely. Hitty had organised a cot for the baby which was appreciated. The location was excellent, just 7 minutes walk from the station transport hub. Plenty of convenience stores and restaurants nearby.
Because it's an historic house the stairs are steep and taller people need to watch their head in parts. But we didn't mind as it was part of the character of the house. There was some street noise at night but it was no problem for us as good sleepers.
Thank you very much for staying with us and for your warm review. It was truly an honor to welcome your family from New Zealand, and we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed both our hospitality and the unique charm of our machiya. We’re glad the location, the history of the house, the welcome sweets, and the baby crib helped make your stay more comfortable. We would be honored to welcome your family again if you ever return to Kanazawa. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

The house is nicely decorated and the flowers were gorgeous. He also helped us make a reservation at the best Teppanyaki restaurant we have ever been to! This was our best stay in Japan so far!
It was a bit noisy and the boys (1.90) kept bumping their heads.

Truly amazing place, and Hitty was so incredibly kind to us. He shared the house’s history with us & even brought us up into another part of the house to share some samurai era relics with us. We were personally met by Hitty & given sweets when we arrived, so make sure you give him an accurate time of arrival - we ran late on a tour but he was so gracious and kind about it. He made us a dinner reservation at a nearby restaurant and we had an amazing meal. 10/10, highlight of our trip so far & we will be back!!

Verified reviewOur host was so hospitable and kind. He was waiting for us on arrival with gifts and gave a wonderful tour showing how the traditional house worked; but also sharing traditional family heirlooms and cultural items used to decorate the house such as the flower arranging, tea and antique tea sets to use, kimono and other art. It was a wonderful introduction for our children to learn about Japanese traditions in such a personal way. This was our favorite place we stayed, and our children still talk about it!
It is such a special place, it's hard to think of anything! One thing perhaps to be aware of is that is it is an old house, so low ceilings, steep stairs, etc which may be a deal breaker for some people.

Verified reviewWe loved staying in this little townhouse. The location was great as it was close to all the facilities at the train station but was within walking distance of everything we wanted to see. There was a lot of character to the house with its steep stairs and tatami mat rooms but it had the conveniences for our 6 night stay including the washer/dryer.

Thank you for giving us your daughter's adorable drawing as a gift. Seeing Mount Fuji, a Japanese cat, and the warmth of spring depicted in it, our entire staff was deeply moved. Our country, like yours, is an island nation with a long history. However, since your people were active around the world in the past, English remains the global common language today. In contrast, our country was closed off during that time, developing a unique culture with samurai and other traditions. Despite such differences in culture, both of our nations share a deep appreciation for beauty in the details. Your family's curiosity is truly wonderful. We sincerely hope that your journey in Japan will become a cherished memory for your family.

Thank you for writing a review. I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay in Kanazawa in winter. This building was built in the early Meiji period, shortly after the Edo period.
