Each review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive info (e.g. emails, phone numbers, credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (i.e. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.

We slept very well, but it's worth to mention that the mattress is very soft for those who do not like this.
Our studio was amazing, we could see that the hosts put a lot attention to detail into this place. We had a great bathroom with nice shower, had enough space to hang our clothes and store our luggage. We had everything we needed to have meals in the studio, with a fridge, microwave and dishes. There was a sofa, and a small table with stool, which was very convenient. We walked around 10 mins to Otsuka station, where you can take the Yamanote line or walked around 15 mins to another station to take the subway. The neighborhood is very calm and we had two convenient stores very close. We enjoyed our stay and can only recommend!

Nothing. It even has a lift that is rare. Maybe the little slope when trying to reach the hotel from train station, but not a problem for me.
The area is tranquil yet easy accessible. JR to everywhere or take the traditional-style tram Toden-Arakawa line that is some different experience. The Kinenyu Sauna nearby is a must try.

Nothing as such about the property, the walk from the subway station was a bit uphill which made it difficult to walk to and from the hotel.
It was well maintained and had everything we needed.

Everything was fantastic.
This was our second stay at Kainoa Guesthouse. Again, everything was wonderful. Soft, very comfortable beds, clean and tidy, and several 7-11s and Family marts are close by. You get to Ikebukuro Station and Sunshine City in 10 minutes by foot, and from there, you get to the hot spots easily and quickly. The owners are very friendly and always respond within minutes. We can't recommend this hotel enough! The rooms are big, and you live in a rather quiet Tokio neighborhood, which is nice after spending the day in busy Akihabara, for example.

There is a little bit of "white noise" from outside, which is noticeable when sleeping. However, we still slept like babies, and we are a bit sensitive when it comes to noise. So, it's not really a problem unless you are hyper sensitive to monotone noises during the night.
Very clean and tidy room. Nice bathroom with a big shower. The bed is big enough for two people and one of the few soft beds you can find in Japan :D You can watch Prime, Netflix, Disney + and more. The owners always answer within minutes if you have any questions.

It’s not the most central location to the main tourist destinations but there’s several train stations within a short walk and Ueno Park is only a few stops away.
This is a lovely guest house. The rooms were clean and well- equipped with a spacious bathroom and shower. Yuko was a friendly, helpful and generous host. She was especially kind to our 7 year old son. There was an honesty snack bar at the front door with cheap products and beautiful origami decorations in the hallway. We absolutely loved our stay at Kainoa and will definitely stay there next time we visit Tokyo.

My Room is located near entrance and slide doors when closes hits hard making it very inconvenient in the morning when people start to go in and out, you will probably wake up. If not that I would give 9 score.
Roomy, clean and very close to rent a bike spot and laundry service.

Superbly comfortable bed, great vibes, everything provided for having breakfast or even a microwave meal. Very private. There is a coin laundry on the corner. The location is great as well-- a quiet neighborhood well connected to the train line. I would definitely come back.

The rooms are very large for Japan. Honestly it was nice to be able to fit our luggage and walk around as well as an easy to connect to TV and adjustable lighting with a knob. Shower was very spacious. The owners are both lovely. It's a family ran business and they still do everything to accommodate you. I ran out of toilet roll at night and they went out of their way to bring me extra. Location is great. 10 mins from the Otsuka station and right next to a 7/11. I will be staying with them in the future.

Everything was perfect.
We received exact instructions with pictures ahead of check-in, making it very easy to find the place. Nick provided excellent tips on the surrounding area - where to eat and jog etc. The extra touches like coffee and tea and bottled water, some hanging space for clothes were nice after a long journey. It was clean and comfortable, close to a train station.
