Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

United KingdomThe shower location is a bit awkward and getting our suitcases up the narrow steps was hard.
The guesthouse is ran by a very cheerful and helpful lady. The price was excellent fir a stay during peak sakura. The location is fine, though we had suitcases to drag the 15 minute walk from the train station. The room was small but beds comfortable. The shared toilet was just outside room but the shower is in an adjaceant building. The Japanese breakfast was very good.

United KingdomI did get woken up by the dog in the morning but went back to sleep pretty quickly.
Lovely owner, big room, plenty of free tea, and a hearty breakfast. Really enjoyed the two nights I spent here. Day-tripping is possible to Nyuto Onsen, ideally with a car but I made the bus work. About 10 minutes walk to the centre of Kakunadote.

United KingdomThe boards on the floor outside the toilet aren’t level and every time you step on them it makes a loud bang as it rocks. Just needs something wedged beneath to level it and therefore quieten it down
Owner was lovely. Did a tour of the place. Bikes available, if wanted. Comfy shared space. Bed was comfy.

DenmarkIt was a bit expensive for what you got. There was only one toilet and one shower shared by all rooms (4). And no proper kitchen (there was a kettle, microwave and fridge), but for a few days it was perfect
It was close to the station and the main attractions (samurai houses). There was also free bikes for loan which was really nice. We used them to bike to Dakigaeri valley (9 km each way - approx. 1 hour). The host was nice and helpful and spoke English really well.

GermanyThe common sitting area could benefit with some airing. I took a shower after another guest and it was quite dirty. Despite it being a small town, it is too far to go to the train with luggage and we couldn't find a Taxi. Eventually we walked to 7/11 and asked them to call a taxi for us. maybe have some more information for that purpose available at the GH would help.
Since Kakunodate is small, it is easy to get anywhere. The place has bicycles that guests can use and there is a wonderful bike and walk trail near by. There is 7/11 just around the corner. The beds were specious and comfortable. Dormitory style. The owner speaks English and is very kind and helpful even though she wasn't there most of the time. we were helped by her to get transportation to the hike we went on.

GermanyIt is far if you need to carry the luggage to the train station so you need to take a taxi. The owner wasn't there to help so we ended up going to 7/11 for help. The shower looked like it was used by other people and it wasn't so pleasant.
The owner of the GH is kind and very helpful. The beds are spacious and comfortable. The location is right next to 7/11 so it's convenient. There are bicycles that guests can take and it makes everything very near. There is a taiku drumming school right next to the GH, maybe ask to watch. We only learned about it when we left.

JapanThe shower was alright and you had to pay for towels which was a little surprising.
It was a bit of a walk from the station, but everything in the town was a bit of a walk from the station. It was no problem for me, but older people or those with lots of bags might have trouble.

United StatesThe guesthouse feels like a homestay. It's Japanese style with a spacious tatami living room, but with beds in the dormitory, very comfortable sleeping quarters. The toilet is in the garage just next to bedrooms, but there's no sink downstairs. You brush your teeth in the kitchen. There's a small oven and microwave, and tea bags. It's convenient to the Samurai street, and the onsen (700 ¥) is just 5 minutes away.

JapanThe shower room is in a completely separate building, so that was a little bit inconvenient. But overall, it was a very nice stay for those visiting Kakunodate and I would highly recommend it.
Despite arriving to the property quite late, the host was very hospitable and took her time to explain and show all the facilities to me. Also the room I had was completely private and very spacious, with the sink and restroom being quite close. Pretty close to the main Kakunodate sightseeing spots, and having a bike rental option available was nice.

United KingdomThe shower is in an adjacent building. From memory, I think there was just one shower. I can imagine during busy times you could end up waiting for the shower.
Kakunodate is a small town and easily walkable. This guesthouse is fairly central. The owner is friendly and greeted me when I arrived even though it was late in the day. I didn't see her thereafter! The room was spacious and there was space for clothes and luggage. I stayed in the main house and the toilet and wash basin were close by. There weren't that many people staying when I was there so I don't know how busy it would get.

GermanyI was confused because the owner did not come there before 6pm and when I rang the bell there was only an angry dog. I assume it is because I had selected my expected arrival time as 6-7pm, but I was not at all sure at the time of booking and intended this information only as rough estimate.
The building seems to have been used for private living before, therefore the space is quite large, although the border to the private space is not very clear. The place is close to the river and has bikes which can be used freely.
