Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Perfect location right on the lake. Don’t miss a swim on the beach right in front with a magical backdrop of mountains and a beautiful sunset! Absolutely spotless full marks for cleanliness even by Japanese standards, thoughtful touches at every point, even more thoughtful menu. We were very impressed ( and we have been to many luxury ryokans).

AustraliaThe service is exceptional. All staff members are friendly and attentive. Onsen is well maintained. The place is kept spotlessly clean. Dinner and breakfast are Michelin class. We are rather surprised that one of them can communicate well in English.

United KingdomWe would have preferred a Western breakfast the following morning, however that might have been a dietary option that I missed/forgot to tick and is down to personal preference not any fault of the hotel. I find it hard to find anything I didn't like about the hotel
The room had a lovely view and a good size. The staff were kind, helpful and treated us well during our stay helping us with taxi's to a local shrine and offering us a coffee upon our return. The hotel is easy to get to by bus or taxi. The room gave us a lovely view of snowy mountains and the private room for dining gave us a nice view of the lake. I would recommend staying here and hope to go back at a later date

Warm welcome, friendly and helpful staff, beautiful room and sensational meals!! The presentation, attention to detail and flavour of the kaiseki meals was superb - and the volume of food was extraordinary! They also had some very nice wines on offer which came as a welcome surprise!

AustraliaThis place was superb. The hospitality by all the staff members was incredible. We arrived earlier than the check in time and it was snowing and so windy outside, the staff let us wait in the lobby with hot coffee. The room itself was beautiful and large enough for our family of 6. It had a beautiful view over the lake. The futon beds were very comfortable. Even my 65 year old mother liked them. The food was so wonderful, we were able to try Akita regional specialities. The onsens were great and we appreciated being able to use the private family bath with our children. We would highly recommend this place for a wonderful Ryokan experience.

Meals were easily the most intricate and most sophisticated of all the Ryokans I've tried. They go out of their way to showcase Akita specialties, which I really appreciate as it means I need not travel to restaurants specially to try them. They provide a private dining room and I cheekily thought to myself that this is so you can lick your plate clean! Indeed it was so delicious that if the Michelin inspectors came, I am sure they will get a star. Best service out of all the ryokans I went to - everyone is super attentive and super responsive. On the booking.com app, they were the most prompt to respond to messages. They had good recommendations for me on what I could do around Lake Tazawako and the surrounding area. Other examples of exemplary service: They took the initiative to ask me if I would like a picture with my meal (as I was a solo traveller). How delightful! Out of all the ryokans I stayed in, this is the only one who did that. Another example: they asked me if they could clean my room while I am out. This is unlike other hotels and ryokans that instead ask if I would like my room cleaned (assuming that the default is no). The room was of a most excellent layout with good separation of different areas and a good size such that it makes you feel like you are living in your own apartment and not so much a resort. The bed was also very comfortable - there is something special about the bed linens. They were so refreshing to the touch and so comfortable. At every corner there are thoughtful gestures - a little bench for you to admire a view, the tatami flooring throughout. Every effort has been made to make it a special and premium experience. Even the toilet is larger than some of what I’ve seen and has charming and tasteful decorations. I am so glad I tried out Kashintei Shirahama and hope to be back!

United StatesThe property is facing a beautiful lake and it’s a relaxing setting for those busy people coming to decompress there. They have outdoor and indoor, private Onsen ofurô, and the room was wide and spacious, including areas such as bathroom and shower, with separation of spaces, providing privacy. The eating/working room was across from the room which allowed my husband to read and check emails without distractions. All in all it’s a well thought space setting. Kudos to the architect.

The best place I have stayed during my stay in Japan. The food was amazing the best sashimi I had in a while. The rooms were big enough for a family. The Onsen for family is just perfect for us with a baby. And the staff perfect.

United KingdomThe staff were kind and very welcoming. The hotel is very clean and the situation is good for exploring the lake and surrounding area. We even took a dip in the lake - very refreshing in mid April.
The property is situated just beside lake Tazawa which is delightful. The rooms are spacious and we had a separate dining area opposite our room. It is a traditional Japanese hotel with futon beds and kaiseki dinner plus a Japanese breakfast. It also has a ladies, mens and private onsen.
